Control of a Multi-Robot Planetary Exploration System

The aim of this project is to develop the software infrastructure needed for one (or more) human(s) and a swarm of robots to collaborate in the exploration of hardly accessible planetary environments. For example, we envision that an astronaut shall be able to explore a lava tube on the moon aided by a swarm of small size robots controlled through an audio-visual interface. As the robots advance, they shall place themselves so that network connectivity is guaranteed. The overall goal is to increase the performance as well as the safety of the humans involved in the exploration.

The project requires the evaluation of progressively more refined robot controllers (including features such as connectivity, collision avoidance, etc.). These test phases will include both simulations and field-experiments. The intern will be tasked with setting-up and carrying the simulations/experiments, as well as data collection.

Required: C/C++, sh/bash, Python, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian), MATLAB Preferred: experience with simple microcontroller kits (e.g. Arduino), ROS, Git Desired: experience with robotics simulators (ARGoS, Gazebo), experience with DJI/3DR drones, wheeled robots (kheperas, footbots), etc. (kilobots)

Ion Thrusters for Nanosatellites

This internship will be a contribution to the fabrication of an ion thruster for a nanosatellite, to be used to provide variation of speed during deorbiting, or acceleration to maintain or increase the orbital distance. In the ion thruster, an ionic liquid is stored in a tank, from where it flows by capillarity to the tip of porous emitters. Successively, the ion droplets are accelerated by an electric field. They will then be ejected through a grid, and this force will then propel the satellite. The microthruster arrays will be assembled using a microfabrication procedure. Propulsion tests will be performed via a magnetically levitated balance.

The intern will perform microfabrication of the thruster and will participate to the satellite fabrication, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team and with the technical society Polyorbite.

A background in chemistry, physics or chemical/aerospace engineering is desirable but not essential.

Development of a Geometric Braiding Model for Composite Textile

The complexity of composite parts is increasing due to the high requirements from the aerospace industry. Current composite textile manufacturing processes cannot offer total control over the amount, position, and orientation of fibers. A new braiding process is currently developped at the ACFSlab in order to solve these issues. The development of a numerical tool to optimize the fibers path in the composite components will help to increase the specific mechanical properties of the part.

Develop and adapt a MATLAB code to model fiber path in a biaxial, triaxial, 3D braid and others. An optimization loop could be added in order to increase the specific mechanical properties.

CFD Modeling of the Heat Transferred from an Impinging Flame to a Solid Surface

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, 20% of the victims of aircraftaccidents in the US between 1981-1990 were caused by fire, and the number of firevictims is likely to increase by 4% every year with the expected traffic growth. Thiscan be reduced by using fire-resistant materials to build aircraft, whose flammabilityis evaluated experimentally and numerically. The use of Computational FluidDynamics (CFD) to model the heat transfer between a flame and a solid is essential tounderstand the mechanisms of fire propagation.

- CFD modeling of a flame impinging a solid surface (plane or cylindrical) with Fluentfor various conditions (fuel, burner characteristics, distance)- Modeling of the heat transferred from the flame to the solid- Investigation of potential coupling strategies between the CFD code and a solidthermal code

The candidate must be able to use Fluent and also have good knowledge of flowmechanics, thermodynamics and combustion. Programming skills are a plus. Thecandidate must also be able to work in autonomy and take initiatives.

Development of a CFD Solver Based on Lattice Boltzmann Method

The Lattice Boltzmann method is a rapidly developing approach to simulate fluid flows. We are interested in the development, implementation and validation of a variant of the method for compressible flows and multi-physics problems. In particular, problems involving thermal plasmas flows, where electric and magnetic fields and thermal radiation are coupled with the fluid flow. Two master level students are currently developing and testing the approach for different applications.

The intern will participate in all tasks related to the development of a CFD code : literature review, selection of approach, implementation, validation.

A very good proficiency in programming is required. The coding will be performed using Matlab or C++ language. Good bases in physics, fluid mechanics and numerical methods are required.

Soft Electrodes Based on Conducting Polymers

Organic polymers are very attractive candidates for applications at the interface with biology. The main objectives of this internship is to fabricate novel electrodes based on conducting polymers, to monitor body signals. The fabrication of the electrode will be performed by electrochemical polymerization or electrospinning on sharp metal probes. The films will be then characterized by electrochemical measurements and in vivo tests. The optimization and final design of devices are expected to emerge from experimenting with various thin-film processing methods of conducting polymers. The in vivo experiment protocols and details will be developed in collaboration with neuroscientists.

The student will perform electrochemical polymerization as well as of electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammeter, scanning ion conductance microscopy).

Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary field.

On-chip Combinatorial Assessment of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy Treatment

In conventional drug discovery processes, the interaction between radiation and chemical agents is almost never studied simultaneously due to the lack of a simple, fast and low cost methodology to do so. In the past, we have developed a microfluidic system capable of combinatorially testing 4 different radiotherapy doses with 3 different reagent concentrations simultaneously. Our goal is now to use this methodology to generate data on radiothreapy/chemotherapy interaction wiht the hope of identifiying synergies between certain treatments and radiotherapy.

Fabricate microfluidic systems and molds. Perform spheroid culture. Expose chips to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The only important skill is the will to learn and to work in the laboratory within a team of researcher. Skills in experimental sciences, cell biology, microfabrication and data analysis techniques will all be taught on site.

Microfluidics-based Droplet Generation for Applications in Terahertz and Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Spectroscopy is an underappreciated tool for the fast measurement of several key quantities in fluids. In this project, the student will act in support, and under the supervision of two PhD students working on a project involving spectroscopy in microfluidics. In the first project, Terahertz spectroscopy is used to quantify fouling in organic oils at high speed in a microfluidics droplet generator. In the second project, the optical properties of carefully controlled beads synthesized using droplet microfluidics will be investigated.

The student will be responsible for the fabrication and operation of droplet microfluidics systems as well as the acquisition of terahertz and fluorescence spectra. Finally, he/she will use spectral methods and least square fit to quantify the response.

The only important skill is the will to learn and to work in the laboratory within a team of researcher. Skills in experimental sciences, microfabrication and data analysis techniques will all be taught on site.

Brain in Vivo Imaging in the NIR II Window

The NIR II optical window (1200-1700nm) has emerged as a strong candidate for in vivo imaging due to reduced light scattering and increased light penetration. With the emergence of InGaas Cameras enabling low noise recordings, it is now possible to image deeper in tissue. This project aims to develop and validate a system for NIR II imaging with the goal of quantifying brain vessel pulsatility in vivo.

Develop the imaging system, synchronize the camera and illumination, develop software to acquire images. Perform pre-clinical experiments and analyze resulting images with application to brain vascular pulsatility.

Comparing Bone Growth Rates of Rat Tibiae Following Dynamic Loading

Physical activity is beneficial for skeletal development. Mechanical forces sustained by the skeleton however vary with the type of physical activity, with high impact loading sports (gymnastics, running, etc.) producing the greatest ground reaction forces, compared to low impact sports (swimming, golf, etc.). Few clinical and animal studies have investigated the effects of impact loading on adolescent growth, but results are inconsistent. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effects of low, medium and high impact loadings applied during puberty on bone growth and development using a finely controlled and calibrated in vivo experimental setup applied to an animal model (rat tibia).

The project includes 4 steps: 1) to cut tibial blocks (previously embedded in plastic) into 6-µm sections using a microtome; 2) to observe sections under a microscope and take images of the growth plates; 3) to evaluate bone growth rates using an in-house Matlab program; 4) to compare growth rates from the three impact loading groups (low, medium, high) using statistical tools.

Prior knowledge of Matlab, Microsoft office, etc. would be an asset.

Self Healing Conducting Polymers

Self-healing materials possess the ability to repair a mechanical damage. We will explore the self-healing properties of conducting polymer films included between two metal electrodes. A voltage will be applied between the electrodes to permit a current flow in the films. The films will be successively cut with a sharp object. The damage will likely interrupt the current flow. If the material is self-healable, the current is expected to recover after a certain time. We will also investigate healing assisted by liquids or vapors. The healing mechanism will be studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy.

The student will perform processing of self-healing materials, as well as damage/healing experiments on the films and electromechanical characterization. With the supervision of a PhD student, she/he will participate to scanning electrochemical microscopy measurements.

A background in chemistry, physics or chemical engineering is desirable but not essential.

Often, we need the surface of a material to serve a different function from what its native properties allow. In that case, we must engineer the surface to meet the needs of a given process. Photo-initiated chemical vapour deposition (PICVD) shows promise as a scalable process to facilitate surface engineering. Work at Polytechnique Montreal's PhotoSEL (photochemical surface engineering laboratory) has focused lately on adapting this method at near atmospheric pressure and under mild conditions to tailor the surface properties of metal surfaces, polymer substrates and nanoparticles of various types at both small and large scales. This internship would aim to modify nanomaterials in a fluidized bed configuration

Integrated Mine Waste Management to Prevent Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)

One of the most critical issues for the mining industry remains the management and safe disposal of the important quantities of solid wastes (mine tailings and waste rock) produced during extraction. These materials often contain sulfides which can oxidize upon contact with oxygen (air) and water, producing acidic effluent with high concentrations of sulfates and heavy metals (known as acid mine drainage, AMD). Reclamation of reactive waste disposal sites is best achieved when it is planned in advance and integrated into the mining production cycle. Integrated mine waste management is therefore at the core of the research carried out at RIME UQAT-Polytechnique (Research Institute on Mines and Environment).

Characterization of hydrogeological, geotechnical and geochemical properties of different mine wastes. Physical model (medium scale) experiments in the laboratory. Support to Master's and PhD students. Initiation to numerical modelling.

Basic knowledge in hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering and/or geochemistry. Depending on the student’s background and interests, the internship may focus on co-disposal of mine tailings and waste rocks in open pits, valorization of waste rocks in roads, dams and cover systems, and/or effects of climate change on mining sites.

Engineering a Data-Aware Software System

Modern web applications like Facebook, Netflix or Tinder are "data-aware", i.e., they train and use data mining models to, for example, predict the next Facebook page the user should click on. Each user has her own model, which needs to be updated on-the-fly as new activity of the user and her friends stream in. While algorithmically simple, the software engineering repercussions of updated models are far less clear. Which software architecture do data-aware applications require? What is the optimal deployment strategy to make a new model available to the end user as soon as it is built?

The project basically consists of empirical studies on "real" data-aware web installations. Our lab has significant expertise in such studies as well as the necessary tools and infrastructure. To get up to speed, the project will start with a survey of books and blog posts on data-aware web applications and release strategies.

The student needs the motivation to quickly dive through source code, data and documentation to understand the major components and dependencies of a data-aware system. The student should be familiar with typical scripting languages and should have the desire to learn R to statistically analyze and visualize data.

Debugging Strategies for Swarm Robotics

Background Information Swarm robotics is a discipline that studies fully decentralized approaches for the coordination of large-scale teams of robots (swarms). Research in this field is ambitious: robot swarms are envisioned for scenarios for which solutions are today impractical, too dangerous, or non-existent. From drones to self-driving cars, robot swarms are becoming pervasive, and are used in many kinds of applications. Examples of swarm robotic applications are search and rescue operations, industrial and agricultural inspection, space exploration, and surgical activities. Debugging swarm behaviors is an open issue.

The intern will use a robotic simulator as well as the robots in Dr. Beltrame's lab to devise new strategies for debugging robotic swarms. Information overlays, per robot printing, use of AI to detect anomalous behaviors are possibilities that will be explored with the intern.

Required: C/C++, sh/bash, Python, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian)Preferred: experience with simulators and ROS

Software Engineering for Robotics

The aim of this project is to develop the software infrastructure needed for one (or more) human(s) and a swarm of robots to collaborate in the exploration of hardly accessible planetary environments. For example, we envision that an astronaut shall be able to explore a lava tube on the moon aided by a swarm of small size robots controlled through an audio-visual interface. As the robots advance, they shall place themselves so that network connectivity is guaranteed. The overall goal is to increase the performance as well as the safety of the humans involved in the exploration.

The project includes several algorithms, implementing interacting features, running on a heterogeneous robotic system. In this context, software engineering becomes crucial. The intern will be asked to assess the status of the code repositories and recommend/implement a strategy for its (re-)factoring and maintenance.

Required: C/C++, sh/bash, Python, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian), MATLAB Preferred: experience with simple microcontroller kits (e.g. Arduino), ROS, Git Desired: experience with mid-/large-scale projects in OO languages, UML

Optimisation, Fabrication and Test of a Bistable Compliant Underactuated Clamp

The aim of the project is to create a clamp working like vice-grips, realizable in one-element (no assembly required), which will adapt to the shape of a targeted object to grasp. For that purpose, a design of a underactuated clamp (in order to adapt "fingers" of the clamp to the shape of the grasped object with only one actuator) with a bistable mechanism was studied. And from the latter, a compliant design (design using flexible material to create joints) was proposed. Several optimisations were also proposed according to the usage.

Optimisation of the design of a one-element a bistable compliant underactuated finger (lengths of linkage, geometry of flexure hinge,...). Fabrications of prototypes and a benchmark and tests.

Experimental and Finite-Element Study of Shot Peen Forming

Wing skins are typically formed from large aluminium panels by shot peen forming. It is a superficial mechanical treatment consisting is bombarding the surface of a part with high velocity shots to induce local plastic strains in the material, thus creating residual stresses in the part. This residual stress field imparts a compressive layer at the surface of the part which can be used for forming thin components. Shot peening processes are mostly designed by trial and error. Multiple graduate students enrolled in our laboratory are currently developing finite element method (FEM) simulations of shot peening processes and performing experiments with our own shot peening robot to validate the simulations and explore new phenomena.

Assist a graduate student with developing new FEM simulations by writing code in Matlab, Python, running simulations in Abaqus, Discrete-Element Method Yade, as well as working on the experimental setup by programming the shot peening robot, designing peen forming rigs, performing experiments, etc.

Strong foundations in solid mechanics, expertise in coding (any programming language), experience with FEM.

Non-contact Heating of Commingled Fibers for Composite Manufacturing

Thermoplastic pultrusion is a manufacturing techniques used to produce long, constant profile composites beams. In order to improve the process speed, various preheating techniques were developed using different heat transfer methods (radiation, convection, and conduction). Models of preform heating were developed however none applied to thermoplastic commingled preforms. Lab ACFS is currently working on novel pultrusion techniques for the aerospace industry. The current heating technologies are inadequate and inefficient therefore a new method is required.

The intern will first need to analyze and model the heat transfer mechanisms of carbon fiber yarns. Then, the model will be experimentally validated. Finally, he/she will need to make a recommendation and suggest a future design.

Good knowledge of heat transfer theory, good programming abilities, analytical mind, works well with others.

Applications of Conformal Mapping to Microfluidics: Understanding Self-coalescence in capillary flows

Self coalescence is a new type of flow recently investigated by our group. It takes place when an elongated capillary interface is made to collapse onto itself in a carefully designed microstructure. The goal of this internship is to develop, with the support of a Ph.D. student in our group, the numerical tools to characterize self-coalescence and to reveal its links with a classical problem in low-reynolds number fluid dynamics: saffman-taylor viscous fingering.

Validate theoretical models to understand self coalescence. These models will involve numerical analysis in Matlab, the use of OpenFOAM software to generate multiphase flow models, and the validation of these models using

Skills in Matlab are essential. Complex variable calculus is essential. In general, a strong background in theoretical fluid physics/applied mathematics is an asset. OpenFOAM can be learned once in the group.

Parametric Study of Spider Silk Inspired Fibers by Instability-Assisted 3D printing

Spider silk outperforms most synthetic materials in terms of specific toughness, due to the hierarchical structure with sacrificial bonds and hidden lengths. Inspired by this hierarchical structure, we developed a technique using a flow instability to create poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibers with sacrificial bonds. The breaking of sacrificial bonds releases the hidden lengths which unfold and carry the load, contributing to the high extensibility and toughness of the fiber. The fabrication process is highly coupled with multiple control parameters, resulting in fibers with varying mechanical performance. A comprehensive parametric study is necessary for the optimization of the microstructured fibers.

1. Fabrication of microstructured fibers with different patterns, bond strengths and loop sizes on a MakerBot 3D printer; 2. Tensile test of microstructured fibers on a MTS Insight machine; 3. Data processing and interpretation to analyze the influence of each parameter on the fiber’s mechanical performance.

Basic knowledge on material mechanics; Basic experience in mechanical testing; Data processing skills by Excel/Matlab; Fluent communication skills (written and presentation) in English.

Optical Nose on Chip

Optical noses integrated on chip present numerous advantages over electronic noses such as low power requirements, robustness, and immunity to electromagnetic fields, remote sensing and lower price. Miniaturized on-chip sensor, designed to detect air-borne compounds, are essential for inexpensive monitoring systems that are portable and deployable on a large scale. We demonstrated that it can monitor several volatile organic compounds (VOCs), that it operates in a reversible fashion, under different environmental conditions, and that it detects concentrations in the order of parts per million (ppm). Characterization of Semiconductor Double-heterostructures for Laser Cooling

A successful PhD candidate will come to Polytechnique to perform several characterization measurements of the semiconductor double-heterostructures. The measurements will involve time-resolved photoluminescence studies as a function of temparture and TOF-SIMS, XPS characterization through the GCM lab at Polytechnique. These measurements will help to identify microscopic origins of parasitic absorption, so far preventing laser cooling in GaAs-based double heterostructures.

Task will consist in setting up time-resolved measurements of photoluminescence from GaAs samples, when excited above and below the bandgap, coordinating surface analysis characterization at GCM and helping with pump-probe experiments
