Ultravioletdisinfectionsystemsaremysterioustomanypeople–howcan“light”killbacteria?Butthetruthisitcan.Ultraviolet(UV)technologyhasbeenaroundformore than 80 years, and its effectiveness has beenwelldocumentedbothscientificallyandcommercially.Itisnature’sowndisinfection/purificationmethod.Withconsumersbecomingmoreconcernedaboutchlorineand other chemical contamination of drinking water,more dealers are prescribing the ultraviolet solutionsuitableforbothsmallflowresidentialapplicationsaswellaslargeflowcommercialprojects.

Ultravioletisameansofkillingorrenderingharmlessmicroorganisms in a dedicated environment. Thesemicroorganismscanrange frombacteriaandvirusestoalgaeandprotozoa.UVdisinfection isused inairand water purification, sewage treatment, protectionof food and beverages, andmany other disinfectionand sterilization applications. A major advantage ofUV treatment is that it is consideredsaferandmorereliablefordisinfectionofwaterthanchemicalalterna-tives,whilethelevelofdisinfectionismuchhigher.UVtreatmentsystemsarealsoextremelycostefficientandrequirelessspacethanregulardisinfectionsystems.

What is UV and how does it work?

Ultravioletlightisoneenergyregionoftheelectromag-netic spectrum, which lies between the x-ray regionand the visible region. Wavelenghts of visible lightrange between 400 and 700 nanometers (nm). UVwavelength lies in the rangesof200nm to390nm.OptimalUVgermicidalactionoccursat254nm.

Since natural germicidal UV light from the sun isscreened out by the earth’s atmosphere, we mustlooktoalternativemeansofproducingUVlight.Thisis accomplished through the conversion of electricalenergy ina low-pressuremercuryvapor “hardglass”quartz lamp.Electronsflow through the ionizedmer-curyvaporbetweentheelectrodesofthelamp,whichthencreatesUVlight.

AsUVlightpenetratesthroughthecellwallandcyto-plasmicmembraneofamicroorganism that is in thewaterwhileitflowsthroughtheunit,itcausesamolec-ular rearrangement of the micro-organism’s DNA,whichprevents it fromreproducing. If thecellcannotreproduce,itisconsidereddeador“inactivated”.

Dosage

UVdosage is themostcritical functionofUVdisin-fection,becausetheextentof inactivation ispropor-tional tothedoseappliedtothewater.AsindividualUV lampsemitasetamountofultravioletenergy, itis important that a system be sized correctly. Flowratesarethedeterminingfactorandmustnotbeover-stated. Contact time,which is thetimethewater iswithinthesterilizationchamber,isdirectlyproportion-altodosage,whichistheamountofenergyperunitarea(calculatedbydividingtheoutputinwattsbythesurfaceareaofthelamp),andthustheoveralleffec-tivenessofmicrobialdestructioninthesystem.Thisproduct of intensity and time is knownas theDoseandisexpressedinmicrowattsecondspercentimetersquared(µWsec/cm2).Divideby1000toexpressthedose in thepreferrednotationmJ/cm2 (milljoulepercentimetersquared).

FormaximumUVtransmissiona“hardglass”quartzsleeveisrecommendedfortwomainreasons.Itiso-lates the lamp from thewater tooffermoreuniformoperatingtemperaturesandallowsforhigherUVoutputintothewater.

Factors Affecting UVBecauseUVdoesnotleaveanymeasurableresidualinthewater,itisrecommendedthattheUVsterilizerbe installedas thefinalstepof thewater treatmentandlocatedascloseaspossibletothefinaldistribu-tionsystem.

Oncethequalityofyourwatersourcehasbeendeter-mined,youwillneedtolookatthingsthatcaninhibittheUVfromfunctioningproperly(e.g.,hardness,ironandmanganesecontent,colourisation,TDS,turbid-ity,andsuspendedsolids).

Iron and Manganese will cause staining on thequartzsleeveandpreventtheUVlightfromtransmit-tingintothewateratlevelsaslowas0.3ppmofironand0.05ppmofmanganese.Properpretreatmentisrequiredtoeliminatethisstainingproblem.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) should not exceed500ppm.Therearemanyfactorsthatmakeupthisequationsuchastheparticularmake-upof thedis-solvedsolidsandhowfasttheyabsorbonthesleeve,againimpedingtheUVenergyfrompenetratingthewater.

Turbidity is the inability of light to travel throughwater.Turbiditymakeswatercloudyandaesthetical-lyunpleasant.InthecaseofUV,levelsover1NTUcanshieldmicroorganismsfromUVlight,makingtheprocessineffective.

Suspended Solidsneedtobereducedtoamaximumof5micronsinsize.Largersolidshavethepotentialofharboringorencompassingthemicro-organisms,providingshadedareasandthuspreventingthenec-essarymaximumUVexposure.

Pre-filtration is a must on all UV applications toeffectivelyremoveturbidityandsuspendedsolidssotheUVsystemcanwork to fullpotentialdestroyingthetargetedmicroorganismstoa99.99%killrate.

Additional Factors -UV levels fluctuatewith tem-perature levels. The optimal operating temperatureofaUVlampmustbebelowornear40°C(104°F).Typically,aquartzsleeveisinstalledtobufferdirectlamp-watercontact, thereby reducingany tempera-turefluctuations.TheUVdoseapplied to thewaterdecreasessignificantlywithtemperaturesover40°C.

DescriptionThe UV-1 is a robust, efficient and cost-effectiveultra-violetsterilizerdesigned forthe disinfection of drinking water in theaveragehouseholdataflowrangebetween2.4and5.8GPM(9-22LPM).Typicallyinstalledatthepointofuse(e.g.underthesink),itcantreatmunicipalwateraswellasgroundwaterfromdrilledordugwells,andsurfacewaterfromlakes,pondsorrivers.Otherapplicationsforthissterilizerareforthepurificationofprocesswaterinlabora-toriesanddentaloffices,orthepreventionofbiofoulinginROSystems.

This sterilizer contains a low-pressure,highoutput UV lamp ina304Lstainlesssteel reaction chamber (also available in316L). It comeswithanelectronicballastthatfeaturesalamp-outalarmifthereisnopowertothelamp.
