Lyric is ready to dazzle you with a new season that promises thought-provoking drama, suspense, laughter, theater that will whisk you to faraway worlds, and the visceral passion of timeless music. This is Lyric—and the 2019/20 Season is one of our biggest ever, from our grand-scale productions to our monumental Ring cycles.

We’re excited to launch a series of early Verdi operas beginning with Luisa Miller, exploring the rarely performed gems in this great master’s repertoire that are both musically and dramatically thrilling. We’ll present the Lyric premiere of Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally’s Dead Man Walking— among the most acclaimed American works of our time— and we’ll bring you an award-winning production of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent The Queen of Spades, which has not been seen on Lyric’s stage in 20 years.

The season features a roster of internationally renowned artists, starting with our very own Sir Andrew Davis. In 2019/20, we celebrate Sir Andrew’s 20th season as our esteemed music director. We are so fortunate to have this consummate artist at the helm of two varied productions (The Barber of Seville and The Queen of Spades) in addition to the Ring cycles in the new season.

Sondra Radvanovsky will headline a highly anticipated series of subscription concert events, The Three Queens, as she takes on the tour-de-force finales of Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux, in a true feast for opera lovers. The legendary Sir Bryn Terfel returns to Lyric after an absence of 15 years for his only Chicago appearance of the season. You’ll experience debuts by world-renowned bass Ildar Abdrazakov, tenor Ben Bliss, baritone Ryan McKinny, and celebrated conductor Nicole Paiement, as well as the return to Lyric of such beloved artists as Lawrence Brownlee, Susan Graham, Ana María Martínez, and Patricia Racette.

Our three full Ring cycles will bring local, national, and international audiences to Lyric for an immersive Wagner experience like no other. Please consider adding a Ring cycle package to your order for a “bucket-list” experience every music lover must have.

We’ll close our season with our annual Broadway at Lyric show, the classic 42ND Street in a gorgeous, new-to-Chicago production from the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris that will have you tap-dancing your way out of the theater.

Irrepressible Rosina refuses to marry her pompous old guardian. Meanwhile, a bold young count is eager to win Rosina for himself. And who’s going to make sure those two finish the opera united? The cleverest character in all of Seville: the barber Figaro, whose services are sought after by everyone for everything (the guy has a lot more talents than just cutting hair). Rossini’s music—the aural equivalent of champagne—is the last word in humor, inspiring smiles and laughter on every page of the score, which is what makes Barber the most popular of all operatic comedies.

Verdi’s sumptuously beautiful romantic drama tells the story of sweet, vulnerable Luisa, who loves Rodolfo, the son of a ruthless, unethical nobleman whom Luisa’s own father loathes. The young couple’s relationship leads to catastrophe in a drama that breathes passion and excitement. Memorable arias (including “Quando le sere al placido,” one of the composer’s greatest tenor hits), breathtaking duets, and thrilling ensembles abound in this tale of star-crossed love and violent jealousy. Lyric’s first presentation of this electrifying work in more than three decades will be a feast for all devotees of Verdi and Italian opera.

A young couple is brutally killed, and the convicted murderer, Joseph De Rocher, sits on death row. Sister Helen Prejean agrees to be his spiritual adviser. As she meets his family, and the families of his victims, she begins questioning every attitude she has about how human beings treat each other. Based on real-life events, Jake Heggie’s music and Terrence McNally’s libretto explore the nature of friendship and forgiveness in the most profound ways. Hugely acclaimed in major houses internationally, Dead Man Walking is widely acknowledged as one of the most riveting operas of the 21st century. It simply demands to be seen.

Tchaikovsky’s broodingly romantic thriller is a tour de force for a great tenor. He plays the terrifyingly obsessed Gherman, an unhappy soldier desperate to know a secret hidden by a cryptic old countess—the mystery of winning at cards. The tension turns truly unnerving as Gherman’s compulsion begins to overwhelm him. It leads to devastation both for him and for the countess’s granddaughter, Lisa, whom Gherman loves. Tchaikovsky’s music is the height of Russian romanticism in its melancholy soulfulness, its white-hot passion, and the sweeping grandeur of its orchestra—a masterpiece from the genius who gave the world Eugene Onegin and Swan Lake.

The tragedy of the warrior-maiden Brünnhilde, her beloved hero Siegfried, and all the gods brings nothing less than the end of one world, the beginning of a new one, and the ultimate triumph of love over evil. The start of the fall cultural season is always thrilling—and Lyric’s opening night is a special event that’s not to be missed. SIR BRYN TERFEL IS ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED ARTISTS OF OUR TIME. The Welsh bass-baritone, who has triumphed at Lyric in several of his signature roles, is also an immensely successful recitalist in the most distinguished venues internationally. NORTH SHORE LYRIC BUS FOR WEEKDAY MATINEES

If you’re an opera lover, there’s only one place to be on Friday, September 6th— Stars of Lyric Opera at Millennium Park, a free concert under the stars! Pack your picnic basket and bring your friends to enjoy a performance featuring acclaimed Lyric star voices with the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Sir Andrew Davis. The Millennium Park concert is sure to whet your appetite for an exciting season ahead—the perfect Chicago event for opera buffs and newcomers alike.

Join us for a fun-filled day of behind-the-scenes exploration of the Lyric Opera House! Lyric Unlimited and Lyric’s Guild Board of Directors are excited to host this activity- filled day as a wonderful way to share your love for opera with family members of all ages. Whether you’re exploring the orchestra pit or the stage, or enjoying hands-on demonstrations of operatic stagecraft and costume try-ons, there’s something for everyone. Specifically programmed for children ages 5-10, and a great day of fun for the whole family.

Lyric is pleased to continue our luxury motor coach service from Northbrook Court Shopping Mall for weekday matinee performances. Plus, ride to the opera with fellow opera lovers! OPERA INSIDER SERIES Join us for this illuminating series with music historian and opera expert David Buch. Aisle and adjacent seats incur an additional $10 per ticket fee in Main Floor Prime seating, and a $5 per ticket fee in all other sections of the house. Prices shown are for non-aisle and adjacent seats. Individual events within your subscription may have unique pricing.Contribution level, as well as the date on which we receive your order, is taken into account when seats are assigned.
