ANNUAL REVIEW 2019
2019 saw the Queensland Futures Institute (QFI) redefine its policy approach to A BETTER QUEENSLAND.
Providing a unique and valuable conduit to facilitate business, social and economic growth, innovation and opportunity, QFI and its contributing member organisations remain committed to building a better State.
Encouraging connection, debate, consensus and future vision across a select and diverse group of multisector and industry leaders, QFI remains focused on enhancing the existing and future quality of life for all Queenslanders. As an independent organisation, we are uniquely placed to work alongside both private enterprise and government, conducting and introducing evidence based research projects, supporting and influencing policy review and reform, and co-ordinating expert opinion and leadership forums across both industry specific and multisector focuses.
Our membership continues to grow, with key organisations invested in driving positive accelerated and sustainable growth within Queensland, committing to further enhance our collective voice. Ensuring a balanced, BETTER QUEENSLAND; our member organisations remain increasingly diverse, with representations from industry, business, education, research and the community sectors.
A popular, boutique gathering of Queensland business, industry, research, education and government leaders, demand for our QLD Policy Leaders Series Breakfasts has amplified, driving an increase from four to eight annual events.
An exciting new policy development for QFI saw the inaugural meeting of the Better Cities Initiative on 6 December. A new collaboration of Queensland’s City Leaders, Builders and Service Providers,
the Better Cities Initiative is designed to assist Queensland’s largest urban centres meet challenges from the wave of macro event and mega-trend changes expected over the next decade. Formation of the Council is planned to take place in the first quarter of 2020.
QFI has recently commissioned a new report, investigating ‘What Makes Business Start, Stay and Grow in Queensland’. The research identifies key factors involved in driving and influencing business investment within the State. The findings and report will be launched in early 2020.
The Queensland Economics and Finance Council focused on: Climate Adaptation and Transition - from the perspective of Government; Insurance and Banking; Education, Research and Asset Management; Education – the Future of Universities and TAFE; and Tourism – value and future opportunities.
The Queensland Corporate Affairs Council examined the challenges surrounding economic growth and development, including measures required to increase community support.
Our relationship with both the Queensland Government and the Opposition remains open, supportive and constructive. We continue to work collaboratively within the relevant political and government processes, together with our members and industry experts, to ensure our independent focus produces current and future economic, business and social growth opportunities, investment and policy reform.
Thank you to all our members for your support over 2019 and we look forward to continuing to work together in the year ahead for A BETTER QUEENSLAND.

Better Cities Initiative 6 December
A New Collaboration of Queensland’s City Leaders, Builders and Service Providers – the QFI’s Better Cities Initiative
The Better Cities Initiative is to assist Queensland’s largest urban centres meet the challenges from the wave of macro-event and mega-trend changes expected over the next decade. The first meeting was held on Friday 6 December 2019. Starting in 2020, partnering with Queensland Treasury Corporation, and supported by PwC and Gadens, the QFI’s Better Cities Initiative will commence a pilot program to inform city strategy in order to build successful places across Queensland’s largest cities.
The Council will examine opportunities to build city growth, resilience and experience and the findings of this analysis will see better identification and prioritisation of needs common across our cities. This will enable better sequencing and scheduling of key city initiatives, with the aim of ensuring more efficient financing opportunities and maximising economic and community benefits. Expressions of interest have been called from participants at the meeting and QFI members to nominate leaders to join the Better Cities Initiative – representatives of city leaders, city builders and city service providers are being sought.
