New Faculty and Academic Personnel 2019-2020

Catherine Cashio Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics Catherine graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a B.S. in mathematics and a minor in physics. She received an M.S. in mathematics from the University of Florida where she served as a graduate teaching assistant. She has previously taught as an adjunct faculty member at Camden County College and Sinclair Community College. She joined Birmingham-Southern spring term 2019. Randy Cragun Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics Randy earned a B.A. in psychology from Oregon State University and a B.S. in economics from the University of Oregon. He received an M.A. followed by a Ph.D. in economics from Clemson University. He has worked as an assistant professor of economics at Niagara University for the last three years. Nancy Hartin Assistant Lecturer of Accounting Nancy earned a B.S. in business administration from Samford University and an M.Acc. from the University of Alabama. She is a certified public accountant, and she has previous experience as an accountant and auditor in private business. She has held teaching positions at Samford, and has been an adjunct professor at Birmingham-Southern College since 2015. Centdrika Hurt Visisting Lecturer of Biology Centdrika received a B.S. in biology from Alcorn State University and an M.S. in biology from Jackson State University. She holds a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary biomedical sciences from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She has completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a focus on examining mechanisms of cancer and aging epigenetics. Gina McCaskill Visiting Assistant Lecturer of Psychology Gina received a B.A. in psychology from Antioch College, an M.P.A. in health policy from New York University, and an M.S.W. in social work from Radford University. She also earned a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Alabama. She has held teaching positions at East Carolina University, Lawson State Community College, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Kenda Rigdon Visiting Lecturer of Biology Kenda earned a B.S. in microbiology from the University of South Florida and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has held teaching positions at Samford University, Point University, and the American Public University System. She has recently worked as a research associate at the Small Animal Phenotyping Core at UAB.

Brett Stiefel Visiting Lecturer of Mathematics Brett earned a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Montevallo followed by an M.S. in mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He served as an assistant professor at Judson College teaching mathematics and physics. He has held teaching positions as an adjunct instructor at UAB, Samford University, and Birmingham-Southern College. Anthony Winchester Assistant Professor of Applied Computer Science Anthony received a B.S. and an M.S. in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in computer engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He served as a graduate teaching assistant, and he was awarded UAB’s Outstanding Graduate Student (Doctoral) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Alabama A&M University and as a high school math instructor. Feng Xie Visiting Assistant Professor of Chinese Feng earned a B.A. from Beijing International Studies University and an M.A. from Peking University. She is completing a Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Barbara, specializing in teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language. Her research and teaching interests have focused on computer-mediated communication for second language acquisition.
