Special thank you to our Faith Culture Team who worked tirelessly to plan our week and to our wonderful Home & School Association for coordinating Pancake lunch and Family Dinner!. Thank you also to the parish staff for setting up & serving us during Thursday night ‘s Family Dinner. It is hard to believe it is February already. Before we know it the school year will be over. As we plan for next year, I wanted to make you aware of a shift in our grading system for 2020-21. We are joining the many schools in the Archdioceses, as well as the public schools in the area, who have made the transition to standards-based grading. Why are we changing to standards based grading? The move to a standards based learning model is based on a wealth of educational research. Too often students become skilled at the “game” of school, which is to say that the priority becomes the acquisition of points rather than the development of transferable skills. Removing points and percentages allows the learning targets to take center stage; as a result, the conversations about student progress become centered on skill development instead of letter grades. Why are we moving away from letter grades? There are a number of advantages to using proficiency based grading rather than letter based grades. The use of letter-based grades can often confuse students and parents as they do not clearly communicate the level of learning students are achieving. The criteria behind earning a particular letter grade can vary greatly among districts, schools, and even teachers within a school, leaving students and parents confused. In standards-based grading, the performance indicators clearly communicate the level of learning students have demonstrated on the standards during the grading period. There are several advantages to standards-based grading: It ensures consistent expectations across grade levels. It helps teachers and students focus on the standard in their learning activities. Assessments are aligned to standards and provide evidence of what a student knows and/or can do. It provides feedback as to a student’s proficiency level allowing the teacher to better individualize instruction. It provides parents with valuable information on how their child is progressing on the critical concepts and skills of the grade level as well as individual standards. There will be an informational parent meeting this spring to discuss the standards-based grading system in more detail, as well as a parent packet that will be published in the Messenger in the coming weeks. Thank you for all of your ongoing support as we look forward to a great rest of the school year! Blessings, Mrs. Kristin Lee

A Message from Mrs. Lee …

We had a joy-filled Catholic Schools Week with activities that reminded us why we love our Catholic School. I loved seeing the many smiles during the week and talking with many of you during Family Dinner on Thursday night! Discipleship Wednesday is NEXT week! Disciples are called to continue the mission of Jesus by helping others. During our Discipleship Wednesday on February 12th, our 3rd and 4th graders invite you to help the Assisi Special School and the School Sisters of St. Francis (SSSF) near Bangalore, India.

This school specializes in teaching special needs children ages 3-18, where the sisters provide life training skills, spiritual training, and vocational training. Assisi Special School was established in 2009. A new school building that can accommodate more than 160 students was opened in 2018. Many of the students' families are very poor. Donations collected next Wednesday will help provide:

• Bus service for students that have no means of transportation • School uniforms for students that can't afford them • Meals for children who have little food at home • Scholarships for students who can't afford the tuition • Hearing aids for students who are hearing impaired • Equipment for sports and games • Special equipment for the classrooms • Teaching salaries for the School Sisters of St. Francis • Clean water for daily use THANK YOU for your support of our February Discipleship Wednesday. As a reminder, please send a dollar or more to help this

Stop by the Beer Garden after 4:30pm Mass on 2/8! There will be trivia for adults & childcare/movie for potty

trained children ages 3+!

We have 2 babies in our near future! Sra. Kurth & Mrs. Wilda have been preparing their substitute plans for their upcoming maternity leaves. While they are gone, we will have two wonderful substitutes caring for and teaching your children! Ms. Silvia Guerra is excited to join our team as the Substitute Spanish Teacher. She is a native Spanish speaker, who comes to us with a background in both Catholic education programming and English as a second language education. Sra. Kurth is looking forward to returning next school year! We are also excited to welcome Ms. Gabriella Laske to our team as the Substitute Music Teacher. Ms. Laske has been a church musician for most of her life since she began in the St. John the Evangelist children's choir in first grade and now continuing on at Holy Apostles with the adult choir, as a cantor, and through the productions of The Song of Mark and Encounter. In May 2018 she graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa with a bachelor's degree in music with an emphasis in vocal performance and opera. Over the past few years, she has had the opportunity to study and practice music in Italy, Ghana, and Argentina.

Gabrielle has had diverse experiences in education from serving as a tutor and faculty assistant while at Luther College to working with elementary school students at a school supplementary program in Argentina and assistant directing musicals for middle school through college-aged students. She is currently participating in a course to become certified to Teach English as a Foreign Language. Gabrielle is excited to be joining another facet of the Holy Apostles family and looks forward to getting to know you and your children!

A note from Mrs. Wilda: Yes! There WILL be a spring concert for students 1st-5th grades! It will be on May13th

at 6:30pm with a dress rehearsal performance in the afternoon that day. Ms. Laske will be preparing students for these performances. If you are interested in assisting with decorating, set-up, and/or clean up for this event, please email both [email protected] and [email protected]. I will be back for the last weeks of school and look forward to making music again with everyone!

"I kept finding excuses not to go to the conference, but another Holy Apostles father finally convinced me. I am glad he did because I really enjoyed my first conference. It is a powerful experience to

listen to motivational speeches, say confession, pray, and socialize with hundreds if not thousands of Catholic men from the Milwaukee area. It was great to share my pride to be Catholic and to

reenergize my relationship with my friends, family and most of all, God." - James Hubacek, HA father of 3
