Tutors´ greetings
ESSI KIRILO
Hello! My name is Essi, I’m 24 years old, and I’m a master’s student majoring in Innovation Management. I’m originally from
Nokia, I’ve lived in Tampere for a couple of years now and did my bachelor’s there. I visited Kuopio for the first time ever when I
moved last autumn. I chose Kuopio because of the international master’s programme and possibility to study innovation
management. Kuopio has been a positive surprise, and there is a lot to do whether you are into sports or something else. I highly
recommend everyone to be active with getting to know people as there is such an amazing student community in Kuopio and
attend different student events, there is a lot to choose from. See you in the fall!
ASTA LIUKKONEN
Hey you there! My name is Asta and I’m one of the tutors of Innovation Management and International Business and Sales
Management master’s programmes. My major is Innovation Management and since I’ve always been interested of psychology, I
chose work and organization psychology as my minor. Getting accepted to master studies to UEF was a dream come true and I
have enjoyed my studies here. The first year of master’s studies gave me a lot of professional knowledge, wonderful experiences
and bunch of new friends.
On my leisure time you can find me working out in CrossFit gym, hanging out with my friends or for instance watching Kalpa’s ice
hockey match. I encourage you all to be active with your studies, enjoy your free time and participate in all kinds of student events,
since the events are a great way to make new friends and build up your professional network. Welcome to UEF!
HOW TO STUDY AT THE UEF?
Personal study plan
All new students make a personal study plan in the beginning of their studies. It is a tool for planning your studies and setting up
your goals. With the help of your plan, you get closer to your goals and the choices related to your studies become visible. You can
clarify your decisions by planning your studies and you will be able to avoid overlapping courses. Your personal study plan will
shape up as your studies proceed. In addition to the schedule of the studies, you can examine also your goals and learning in your
plan. The syllabus and the degree structure of your major are the basis for your plan.
Your personal study plan is updated in WebOodi as your studies proceed and it becomes a useful tool for planning your studies
and for controlling your study time. The key in planning your studies is that your choices, like the possible minor, practical training
or possible studies abroad, are related to your own goals in the Master´s degree. Also a realistic scheduling is an important aspect to
keep in mind.
Practical training and international exchange
You can include practical training in your studies. Your job description during your practical training must correspond tasks to
which the Master´s degree gives the competence for. Practical trainings of Master´s degree students typically include tasks such as
demanding customer service, development or reporting tasks.
University of Eastern Finland offers multiple possibilities for degree students to complete a part of your studies in some university
abroad. Please find more information on student exchange, traineeships abroad, and other possibilities for internationalization at
UEF KAMU Student handbook https://kamu.uef.fi/en/opkirja-kategoriat/study-abroad/
Registering for courses and examinations
You must register for the courses at least a week before the teaching begins. The registration is done in WebOodi. Students plan
their own timetables themselves. The course descriptions, timetables and also possible changes to timetables and rooms are
updated in WebOodi. Therefore, following WebOodi is highly recommended!
Students must register for all examinations at least ten days before the exam in WebOodi. This registration is compulsory and
belated registrations are not accepted.
Informing the students
Registering for the courses in WebOodi is vital as the teachers send info about course material and other things related to
completing the course through WebOodi. Students must take care that they have a valid email address saved to their contact
information in WebOodi as the communication between the student and the teacher happens by email.
Please remember also to join and follow the group “UEF Kauppatieteiden opiskelijat // UEF Business School Students” in Yammer.
The students´ digital handbook is called UEF//Kamu. More information about the digital tool is found at the end of this guide.
Recognition or Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) refers to a set of practices and procedures that can be used to assess the prior learning of the
student and to approve that learning as part of the student’s studies. Prior learning may be a result of the student’s earlier studies or
it can have been acquired in some other manner.
The recognition of prior learning is based on the correspondence between the applicant’s competencies and the content and level of
the pursued degree and its components, as defined in the learning outcomes.
Application for RPL can be found at KAMU / Student handbook / Guides and instructions / Recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Minors
Minors are not compulsory in the degree structures of our Master´s degree programmes. However, you can include a minor in your
degree. Your choice of the minor can be based on your own interests, recommendations of the department or your future career
prospects. It is essential that your degree becomes an interesting and meaningful whole that supports your transfer to the work life.
The possible minor is included in the elective studies section of your degree. The extent of a minor is at least 25 ECTS.
Academic calendar at UEF

WHY INNOVATION MANAGEMENT?
The two-year Innovation Management studies is designed to give students the skills to initiate and lead innovation and renewal in
companies, start-ups, family businesses, and large organizations. Through hands-on projects, close collaboration with companies,
and working with case studies, the students learn to combine analytical and creative thinking in leading innovation. Our highly
qualified faculty utilize the latest research and pedagogical knowledge in creating an interactive and supportive learning
environment. With a personalized learning plan, each student builds a personal competence portfolio for pursuing a
management or a specialist career in business. The Curriculum also provides skills to operate in an academic field.
Major in Innovation Management programme is concerned with the renewal of business and organisations. The key issue is the
creation of new modes of action, processes, products and services – innovations. Innovations determine the competitiveness of a
company, hence the need for innovators in working life. The secret of success for every enterprise and individual is the ability for
renewal.
Innovation Management will teach you to identify opportunities for renewal, to apply the right methods and tools for renewal work
and to accomplish challenging renewal and development projects. Being innovative entails both the ability to quest ion prevailing
practices and to create new ones. You will learn to lead, plan and implement development and renewal projects connected to
organizing, strategy, personnel resources, sales and customer care.
Graduates will have excellent prospects for placements as business experts, change consultants,
managers and entrepreneurs. Students specialising in innovation management typically begin
their careers as team leaders, project leaders, experts and consultants, moving on to line manager
and managerial positions. Many of our graduates start their own businesses or take a position in family
enterprises.
