newshound Message from the President After a long cold winter, spring is finally here. We look forward to a bright and energy filled season. Looking back over the last three months we have lots to be thankful for. Though challenging at times, we had a successful winter at the shelter. We also had major success with our fundraising event and significant donations from individuals and businesses here in Yellowknife. We took in many dogs and cats throughout the NWT and Nunavut and either found them homes here or transferred them south to find homes through other organizations. We also had an emotional story that both angered us and brought us all to happy tears. Brave is a young dog that was tied on at a very young age it seems and the rope was never loosened. In the end the damage that this poor dog suffered was horrendous. He had deep open wounds so bad that his trachea was damaged. However because of the good will of a young man from the community, Brave was untied and taken to the local SAO. Finally he was brought to us in Yellowknife and seen by the Great Slave Animal Hospital. Brave is a true survivor and his resilience is incredible. He is now in a foster home and possibly adopted. To make this story even better a generous couple from Ontario paid the large vet bill of over $4000. After hearing of his story on our Facebook page these wonderful people helped us out. This inspiring story is what makes all the heartache and sadness bearable. We hope that we never see another case like this but unfortunately we likely will. Animal neglect will only disappear with education of our children and sharing our stories and good will toward the animal in need. I hope you enjoy our second newsletter of 2014. We look forward to seeing you at the shelter or at our upcoming events! Message from the President

After a long cold winter, spring is finally here.

However because of the good will of a young man from the community, Brave was untied and taken to the local

SAO.

Nicole Spencer President- NWT SPCA

Skijoring at the Long John JamboreeThe Long John Jamboree (LJJ) took place the last weekend of March and the NWT SPCA was lucky to participate with a skijoring race. Eight racers and their humans braved the frigid -45 temperatures to come out support us. Participants all walked away with amazing prizes from Borealis Kennels & Pet Specialties and the Yellowknife Veterinary Clinic. Thanks to all of the enthusiastic supporters that came out, the LJJ Committee and Julian Morse, and our volunteers Kyla Cherwaty, Kim Ferguson and Michelle Rees.

AppreciationThe NWT SPCA is a volunteer-based organization. Our volunteers work extremely hard, putting in an average of 30 volunteer hours a day to keep both the shelter, and the SPCA as an organization, functioning. Thank you to all of our volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the betterment of animals’ lives. We would like to recognize Lauren Seabrook.

Lauren Seabrook contacted us back in late 2013 about a program she was involved in called Tenille’s “Pay it Forward” Tour. Tenille Nadkrynechny has spent two years touring Canadian Schools, recognizing those students who kick start school programs and lend a caring hand to their peers. Lauren was chosen as a student leader and granted $5000 to go to charities of her choosing. Fortunately one of those charities was the NWT SPCA. We will receive $2000 paid by the Alberta Community Foundation and through the Pay it Forward Tour program thanks to Lauren.

In addition to her very generous donation, Lauren spends regular time at our shelter helping with many chores and duties. She can be seen cleaning kennels, caring for injured or scared dogs, cleaning and playing with the puppies or helping deworm the many dogs that come into our facility. We wish to recognize Lauren Seabrook for her wonderful work ethic, her generous spirit and her very pleasant demeanor. She is an important part of our organization.

Thank you very much, Lauren!

At the NWT SPCA we are always looking for volunteers to give us a hand! Whether you would like to come out and walk dogs, help us out at fundraising events, or pick up animals at the airport, we can always find something for you to do that will help change the lives of our animals! It’s easy to become a volunteer! All you have to do is fill out and submit a membership form, pay a membership fee of $20 for an individual for one year or $40 for a family for one year. Membership forms can be found on our website. All proceeds from membership fees go directly back into the operation of the NWT SPCA. As a member you also receive membership benefits, including a $20 discount at Super 8, and 10% off at Borealis Kennels and Pet Specialties, and Just Fitness!

Programs & Services

SPCA Foster ProgramThe NWT SPCA is in need of foster homes. We have many animals that need safe, loving homes for stays of a few days to a few weeks. We are looking for people who can care for animals awaiting permanent adoption or transport to another rescue organization. Sometimes placement is needed on a short notice.

Spay and Neuter Rebate ProgramThis program is intended to assist pet owners who adopt from the NWT SPCA with the cost of a spay or neuter. When you adopt a puppy or kitten from us they are not sterilized as they are too young. It is required however by the age of 6 months that you fulfill the adoption contract with us and get that procedure done. This rebate helps with the cost of that. We offer a 30% rebate on sterilization of your pet that was adopted from the NWT SPCA.

Spay and Neuter Loan ProgramThe NWT SPCA can provide an interest free loan to help with the spaying or neutering of your cat or dog (not including vaccinations). The loan must be repaid within one year and each loan can only be applied to one animal. Once you have repaid your loan, you may apply again for assistance with another animal. Costs vary depending on the size of the animal and its medical condition.

HERO CampaignFor $75 you can sponsor a dog to fly south to a partner facility, or for $150 you can sponsor a dog to fly to Yellowknife from northern communities, where they will surely be adopted. This is intended for animals who have been at the shelter for extended periods of time, older animals, animals that have behavioural issues and puppies who would not make it through the harsh community winters.

SPCA ScholarshipEvery year the NWT SPCA gives away a $500 scholarship to recognize and reward an individual who contributes to the betterment of animals through education and extra-curricular activities.

Community Spay and Neuter ProgramFor $200 a family can send in their dog to us and we will get the dog spayed or neutered, and vaccinated if needed. The dog is then sent back to the community where it will not reproduce in the future, thereby helping the dog population problem in the NWT communities.

The NWT SPCA has a variety of programs and services that benefit both the SPCA and the animals in the North. For more information please contact the SPCA or visit our website for forms.
