2019 Campus Expansion

Life House’s capacity has expanded. Upon our final inspection in November, we have officially opened our Annex Building and Commons Area where we have programs taking place now. The Annex is home to a fully outfitted classroom on the top floor, complete with study pods, a smart board, new computers, and coffee bar. The classroom is enclosed in beautiful exposed brick walls and natural lighting from southern facing windows. The space is connected to our main build-ing where the Drop-In Center is located and connects many youth to our programs and services. Youth and young adults are able to walk through the center and head into the Annex classroom.

On the main floor of the Annex, we have a retail space with an open concept workshop where our youth and young adults both create and sell their merchandise. We also created an enclosed outdoor recreation area with a new concrete slab and a privacy fence. This is considered the Life House Commons, which offers LOLL furniture seating, picnic tables, a gas grill, and patio heaters for year around use. Enthusiasm for the classroom, retail showroom and work space can be seen

on any given day, in the sheer number of youth utilizing these spaces to work on their education and career goals.

We appreciate all our partners in this project: Donald Holm Construction, Stack Brothers Mechanical, Tom Wutruba,

City of Duluth, Bernicks Family Foundation, Mardag Founda-tion, Duluth Superior Community Foundation, Harbortown Rotary, BNSF Foundation, Canadian National Foundation, Northland Foundation, Shavlik Foundation, Union Pacific

Community Ties Foundation, and Cathedral Cares.

A Special Thank You to the Holmgren Family for their generous contribution.

2019 Highlights

In October with the support of Minnesota State Arts Board, Life House unveiled our new 30’ x 30’ mural

on the western side of our main building.

Guided by local visual artist Adam Swanson, in partnership with our youth, the mural was painted panel by panel inside our Drop-in Center. Adam’s

skills as an artist coupled with his ability to connect and teach youth during this project were invaluable. The Phoenix Rising was selected by our youth as a

representation of their strength and resiliency.

With the assistance of Joe Olivieri of Wherehouse Productions, a brief documentary of this project

can be found on YouTube, which is titled:Life House’s New Mural

Annex open concept workshop area

Life House was the recipient of the Maurices Grand Give volunteer event. During the project about 30 volunteers spent the day creating a micro version of a Maurices boutique, which we affectionately

named Maurices Market.

The beautiful market is located in the heart of our Youth Center, and provides brand new seasonal

clothing items and jewelry. These items are free of charge to our youth and young adults because of

the generous contributions of Maurices.

With the assistance of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, we held an extremely well attended ribbon cutting ceremony, unveiling our new building to the public.

About 75 youth come together to celebrate Prom, and the theme for the year was Mardi Gras.

Life House Mental Health and Wellness Wall

Life House staff are ready for the Annual Holiday Party. With generous supporters, we

have been able to distribute gifts to more than 100 youth and young families.

The Legitimate Hustle Program sold candles throughout many community events, which

included Duluth Sidewalk Days.
