With great enthusiasm, we report that 2019 was an exceptional year for the Community Foundation of Teton Valley. Our goal was clear: to help our nonprofits be the best at what they do by providing professional development and tangible resources for achieving their goals.

The Tin Cup Challenge is our greatest resource for elevating our nonprofits and the communities they serve. In 2019, we helped to raise over $1.6 million in partnership with local nonprofits. Over the course of 12 years, that total is now over $14.3 million. The positive impact of these dollars can be seen and felt throughout our valley in our collective health, social services, education, recreational opportunities, and natural environment.

The Foundation is humbled on a daily basis by our small community’s level of and commitment to philanthropy and the beneficial effect it has on so many aspects of our lives. Participation in Tin Cup giving by one in four households reinforces our conviction in the work we do and its positive impact.

In 2019, along with our Tin Cup Challenge Program, the Community Foundation of Teton Valley provided workshops and talks for both staff and board members to support the continued enrichment of our nonprofits, worked with high school seniors through our Youth Philanthropy Program to educate our future leaders about the virtues of philanthropy, granted over $56,000 for innovative and vital projects that serve to better our community, and provided a secure place for donors and nonprofits to house managed funds.

Our vision for the future is simple. We want Teton Valley, Idaho/Wyoming to be the best place to live, visit, and recreate. The Community Foundation of Teton Valley is here to serve and support our community of nonprofits and their dedicated and passionate work that elevates lives. We are grateful for our successful year and look forward to continuing to serve and contribute to our community in the years ahead.

Warmest Regards,

AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR

Page 4: 2019 ANNUAL REPORT  · Mission To elevate lives through the power of generosity. Values Collaborative | Compassionate ... Peter David Brendsel Fund for Childrens Literacy Susan and

This year, more than ever, the Community Foundation of Teton Valley understands that the Tin Cup Challenge Program is vital for the health and support of the local nonprofit community, by providing basic funds for operational needs.

In the age of COVID-19, local nonprofits are working across the board to re-evaluate programming, systems, and over-arching models in order to accommodate the drastic changes Coronavirus has brought to our day-to-day reality. Their efforts are making a difference and will continue to be of vital importance for our community. Your donation this year during the Tin Cup Challenge, in any amount, shows how much nonprofits are valued and allows them to provide services into the future.

This Spring, in response to the pandemic, the Community Foundation of Teton Valley initiated a Community Emergency Response Fund, which has grown to over $125,000 to-date, with generous contributions from charitable community members. These dollars are providing necessary relief to those most affected by COVID-19. The Foundation is honored to help fund needs, both immediate and for the future health of our nonprofits.

Our Challengers, Friends of the Challenge, and Community Foundation Donors provide funding and support for the programs and services we offer. Their unwavering generosity enables collective impact to address critical community needs. The Community Foundation of Teton Valley empowers donors by keeping them informed and making giving easy - whether it’s through Donor Advised Funds or the Tin Cup Challenge.

YOUTH PHILANTHROPY IN ACTIONFrom a student’s perspective - “I can honestly say that participating in the Youth Philanthropy Program was one of the best highlights from my senior year. From the moment our teacher, Rose Hendricks, told us about the project, my classmates and I were excited about the chance to actively contribute to the well-being of our community.

At times, I found it challenging to keep from discussing the opportunity with non-participants, and I know many of my classmates faced the same struggle - it was basically the only thing on our minds for almost a month. Both during and outside of our deliberation, I noticed nearly every student becoming more involved with the rest of the class, and our community. While teenagers are often accused of being apathetic and lazy, the Youth Philanthropy Program gave us a chance to show just how compassionate, hard-working, and thoughtful Teton Valley youth truly are.

It was hard deciding how to split $5,000 in grants between a dozen worthy organizations, but the challenge allowed us to analyze how different programs benefit our community. Ultimately, my class was able to distribute the grants in a way that profited the maximum number of community members.

After participating in the Youth Philanthropy Project, I gained a stronger sense of belonging in our tight-knit community. Even now, I feel partly responsible for the well-being of our home, as should all Teton Valley residents, and I don’t think the effects of this project will fade from our minds any time soon. Now, more than ever, taking care of each other is vital. Thanks to the Youth Philanthropy Project, I trust that my class is capable of making the best decisions possible for the greater good.” - Kyran Cates, Senior, Teton High School

SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE JOURNEYThe Community Foundation of Teton Valley is a constant, supportive presence for both new and existing nonprofits. New Executive Directors are well served by our expertise and experience which helps them gain their footing with best practices, workshops, and an open ear. The Community Foundation has been there for Teton Valley Aquatics in the full circle of it’s first Executive Director from hiring to succession.

From an E.D.’s perspective - “Beginning as the first staff of a young organization can feel a bit like the “Wild West” - there is a lot of terrain to cover, many competing priorities and sometimes the path forward is hard to find. My first quarter at Teton Valley Aquatics was highly focused on designing the structure of systems and strategy to build a strong foundation to grow upon. My priorities were building the organization’s first annual budget, creating a fund development plan & strategy, creating impactful programming, and building & defining the organization’s culture of philanthropy.

Engaging in the Community Foundation’s peer learning communities and professional development workshops empowered me with the knowledge, skills, and support to lead Teton Valley Aquatics in its early stages and successfully accomplish major objectives early on. The 3-part Executive

Director 101 series with Incite! Consulting, Fund Development Planning, and Grant Writing Workshops were especially valuable in forwarding Teton Valley Aquatics’ priorities.

The Grant Writing Workshops helped me thoughtfully and strategically create a compelling ask and we successfully received Competitive Grant Funding to seed our community’s first Learn-to-Swim Program in 2019. The Community Foundation supported Teton Valley Aquatics in building capacity to scale from serving 45 children to over 500, over one year, in a suite of Water Safety Education Programs. Additionally, the space that the Foundation creates for the nonprofit leadership community - whether through Pocket Talks, Talks with Tim, workshops or informal gatherings - to connect, problem solve and share ideas is incredibly special and powerful. Tim, Claire & Brian are amazing community champions and resources, and are there to listen, support, problem solve, ideate and connect.

When the time came in Fall 2019 for me to take the next step in my career, the Community Foundation team shared great insights and best practices as we navigated succession planning and transition to new leadership. I am proud of the foundation I helped to build and the impact Teton Valley Aquatics has had in our community in a short period of time. The Community Foundation of Teton Valley was an integral part of this early growth. I am thankful for the continuous, supportive presence of the Community Foundation through the full circle of my journey as the first Executive Director at a young and growing nonprofit.”

Katie McNamara was the first Executive Director of TVA, beginning her service in November 2017. Katie left her position with TVA in February 2020 to focus her energy on her young and growing business, WheelWranglers. Katie is finishing her first year of an MBA program focused on Finance & Sustainability. She continues to support and champion Teton Valley Aquatics’ mission and the Teton Valley nonprofit community.

DAWN BANKS NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP AWARD

This award honors Dawn Banks, who served as the Community Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Programs for three years. Dawn was incredibly passionate about Teton Valley’s nonprofit community, working tirelessly to ensure that our local nonprofits have the resources necessary to fulfill their missions.

This year’s award went to Julie Martin of HAPI Trails - Horse Rescue, accompanied by a $1,000 grant to her nonprofit. Julie has served as HAPI Trails’ Executive Director for over a decade.

Their all-volunteer organization has rescued and found homes for numerous horses, while collaborating with multiple organizations. Julie’s work ensures horses can be readily rescued, rehabbed, and adopted out to loving homes. In the interim, the horses in her care have the pleasure of getting to know kids and other community members through collaborative programming.

Tina Culman was Vice-Chair before taking on Board Chair from 2017-2019. During her two-term tenure, she successfully helped guide the Foundation through the untimely loss of Program Manager, Dawn Banks and a transition of Executive Directors. She continues to be a strong advocate for the Community Foundation and our mission. Tina Culman

John Finley served three terms, including a 2-year appointment as Vice-Chair. John and his wife Alice sponsored McDonald’s breakfasts on Event Day for a decade and have continued to support the live event with beverages and more, over the last 2 years. John continues to sit on our Competitve Grant Committee.John Finley

NONPROFIT OUTREACHThe Community Foundation of Teton Valley is dedicated to leveraging Challenger dollars, whenever possible. In an effort to support and connect nonprofits, the Foundation started offering quarterly Talks with Tim for nonprofit leaders and free one-hour Pocket Talks for community members in 2019. These, along with our professionally facilitated workshops, were attended by 201 individuals representing 80 nonprofit board members and 121 E.D. and staff members from 38 nonprofits.

STRATEGIC FRAMEWORKOur Board of Directors continually references our strategic framework to advance all of our directives. This year meant diving deeper into our strategic plan to pull out measurable components that will truly help the Foundation map successes and take strategic steps to help our community, as we move into the future. Additionally, as nonprofit leaders in our community, Community Foundation of Teton Valley board members continually participate in fundraising and best board practices workshops.

NONPROFIT LISTSERVThis resource continues to be a valuable tool allowing our Teton Valley nonprofits to share information and promote their local efforts in the community. In 2019, we saw both an increase in the amount of posts, as well as the number of residents joining the Listserv.
