The OLLI Annual Report for fiscal year 2019 provides a window for members to get a sense of the vitality of OLLI at Granite State College during the period July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019. Reports of local volunteer activity at each of four learning sites have been prepared by the Chairs of Central Committees. Snap-shots of program growth and fiscal health are illustrated in graphs and charts and give members quick and easy access to facts related to program operations. OLLI volunteers and donors are recognized and appreciated for their role in supporting the strength and sustainability of the program. And OLLI sponsors are saluted as valued partners.

In FY2019 volunteers and staff evolved to the level of a high-performing team under a shared leadership model with Sharon Kace, as chair of the Steering Committee. We worked diligently with a singular focus on continuously improving the OLLI experience for members. Our five-year strategic plan has provided the ‘GPS’ coordinates for improvement and leaders met regularly to ensure that we made all the right turns at all the right junctures.

Some of the most significant accomplishments at the state-wide level included:

The development of a Member Handbook andproduction of an OLLI volunteer recruitment video guided by the Approaches to Building Continuity (ABC) Team that is dedicated to building the capacity for the next generation of OLLI volunteer leadership.

The initiation of a coordinated presence on social media by an ad hoc, volunteer team formed to design a comprehensive statewide approach to posts that recognize all four sites’ contribution to one, well-represented, OLLI at Granite State College.

A continued commitment on the part of the Curriculum Council to analyze quantitative and qualitative course evaluation data and work cooperatively between sites to inform the curriculum planning process and provide a wide-array of classes that are the most appealing to members. The goal of providing a variety of formats and options to promote accessibility led to the successful delivery of one class presented live in Concord and live-streamed to Conway.

An Eastern European Cruise, day trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and a tour of the Lowell Massachusetts Mills (offered as a compliment to an OLLI Mill Girls course ) were the year’s highlights for the Travel Team who simultaneously planned for a European Christmas Markets excursion and a trip to Canyon Country for next fiscal year.

A steadfast Development Team assumed the responsibility for building a culture of giving and meeting a budgetary goal partially by engaging in NH Gives, a social media campaign sponsored by the NH Association of Non-Profits. This effort was boosted by the accomplishments of the social media team.

A redesign of the online registration system by office staff to restore credibility and ensure member retention was a crucial priority that has since resulted in significant improvements in the online registration experience for members.

Finally, Granite State College stood by their commitment to the program by continuing to provide exceptional day-to-day operational support for OLLI once again demonstrating their unwavering support.

Annual Report to the Membership

Concord Annual Report

The OLLI Concord site’s top priorities last year were enhancing the member experience and promoting the OLLI name in the greater Concord community. Engaging our dedicated and knowledgeable Concord volunteers, we undertook strategies for successfully accomplishing these priorities including actively listening to members’ preferences, offering varied and engaging classes, and hosting entertaining social activities.

To understand member expectations and assure a rewarding member experience, the Concord Membership Committee conducted an online member survey. We learned that almost 99% of survey respondents were pleased with the classes they attended and only four percent had not taken a class. Twenty-five percent of survey respondents participated in social events – Mug & Muffin, Game Day, a holiday party/Yankee Swap – and all who participated were enthusiastic about the events.

Survey respondents told us they wanted to know more about OLLI. In July 2018 we introduced OLLI-taire, a fun and social way to impart OLLI facts and trivia. Members received OLLI-taire fact cards each time they attended a class, event or meeting. Participants learned about OLLI, had fun discussing the game and swapping cards. A lucky few participants were rewarded with prizes for their efforts.

The OLLI Concord site has 180 volunteers who are active on committees, assist with events and other tasks, are presenters and are class assistants. In 2018, Food for Thought was introduced to recognize and engage these volunteers, solicit their ideas, and assure leadership going forward for OLLI in Concord. The forum was

Conway Annual Report

The Conway site enjoyed a robust calendar of classes and social events during the past year as leadership transitioned and committee members took on new roles.

We continued to offer a broad spectrum of classes to our membership, and special interest groups provided opportunities to connect and practice or learn a new skill. We held two previews to educate our members on the upcoming term and both were well attended.

In addition, we held a member and presenter Appreciation Event, providing ice cream and conversation on a beautiful June day. Prior to the event we had an information session for potential new members who enjoyed a cone with our current members.

We continue to work on building membership and succession planning. We transitioned to a new Central Committee Chair, new Publicity Lead and a new Secretary. We are exploring additional avenues to build our volunteer base to ensure that the OLLI at Conway continues to grow and meet the needs of our community.

Looking ahead, OLLI in Conway is on track to grow and to flourish as we start a new year of classes, events and a variety of Special Interest Group, all of which will provide fulfilling opportunities for our committed and enthusiastic learners in the North Country.

Manchester Annual Report

Last year the Manchester site focused on the members’ experience under the leadership of Pam Saulten, Chair, Manchester Central Committee. “We worked hard to determine what our members were looking for outside of a wide array of classes, while also delivering various social events.”

Our volunteer Central Committee provided direction and leadership by acknowledging our site’s steady growth pattern, member retention, and volunteerism as top priorities. Central Committee was diligent in ensuring that Manchester’s communication needs were met and our members well informed.

Our volunteer Communications Committee did an outstanding job by keeping OLLI in the local media. The Manchester site had a front and center presence in the Union Leader on a regular basis. All the flyers and emails that our members received about upcoming events in Manchester were produced by the Communications Committee. They also kept our webpage current.

Our volunteer Membership Committee initiated the development of a program to support member retention by working on improving the member experience. The Membership Committee’s objective was to ensure that members were meeting new people and having a good experience in OLLI even outside of the classroom.

The volunteer Curriculum Committee demonstrated their commitment to local members in FY2019 by successfully planning and running 146 classes; 75 in the fall and 71 in the spring semester.

Seacoast Annual Report

It is my pleasure to report that the Seacoast site continues to grow and thrive. Our membership numbers have increased slightly to approximately 227. Course offerings remain at about 45 per term. By offering more varied courses and social opportunities the Seacoast is working diligently to meet the needs its local members.

The Seacoast has four active Special Interest Groups (SIGs): a handwork group, a political book club, hiking group, and a ukulele group. Members are encouraged to suggest other SIG groups that others might enjoy.

One of our priorities this year was a focus on involving more members at the leadership level. To that end, plans were formulated throughout the year for the restructuring of the Central Committee. The plan involves moving to a shared leadership model where the tasks and responsibilities are spread out among committee members. No one person will be responsible for the success of this team effort. The model will be piloted throughout the FY 2020.

The Central Committee regularly consults the OLLI Strategic Plan to stay on course with the direction of the state program. In keeping with one of the objectives, the Seacoast continued to maintain a good relationship with Granite State College staff at both the Portsmouth and Rochester campuses. Staff have been invited to attend volunteer recognition events and GSC staff and OLLI volunteers continue to work together to collect food for a “Thanks for Giving” food drive in November.

Classes varied in nature from arts & humanities, science and technology, social sciences to walking tours/hikes in Manchester and surrounding locales.

The Manchester Events Committee was invaluable and the co-chairs were creative. Events were both well attended and enjoyable and included:- New England Notable: Dr. Richard MacFarland, Chief Regulatory Officer, ARMI|BioFabUSA- Mug n Muffins: one we learned about each other and in another we learned about becoming Senior Citizen Scientists - Game Day: a fun day which has become a regular event- Class Previews: featured our many classes and engaging presenters

Finally, in September, an ad hoc team of Manchester volunteers planned the state-wide OLLI Annual Meeting as a celebration of OLLI. The theme was “Fall Into The City” and showcased Manchester and many of the exceptional resources it has to offer.

I would personally like to thank all the Manchester volunteers that helped in FY2019. Special thanks go to Pam Saulten for her visionary leadership over the past 3 years. As the new Chair of Manchester Central, I look forward to working with all of you.

There has been a marked improvement in attendance at social gatherings on the Seacoast this year. Events paired with learning experiences have been the most successful. For example, a lunch and learn that featured a sharing session about favorite Seacoast area hikes drew a large gathering.

OLLI expansion in the greater Rochester area will continue to be a challenge for Seacoast volunteers in the FY 2020 as we seek to provide outreach in that location.

Finally, OLLI relies on volunteers. We are lucky to have a very dedicated core of volunteers who serve on various committees, and we have fantastic volunteer presenters. The Seacoast has struggled this year to engage volunteer photographers and article writers for OLLI Outlook newsletter but we are encouraged by the willingness of new members to become involved and will continue to work to find a perfect fit for any and all volunteers.

very successful; many of the new ideas were implemented in 2019. We decided to continue the momentum in 2019 with More Food for More Thought. The discussions at the 2019 forum was phenomenal, identifying priorities to address in 2020.

The Concord Communications Committee continued to inform the Greater Concord community. Utilizing a known successful strategy, we scheduled advertising in local newspapers and distributing over 1700 catalogs in public locations throughout the Greater Concord area. Eye-catching headlines and fun and informative articles about OLLI appeared in local papers including the Concord Monitor Senior Page, Bow Times, and Merrimack Valley Voice. Expanding our social media presence, we began posting OLLI news and upcoming Greater Concord OLLI events on Facebook. And our Ambassadors, responding to invitations, were out in the community speaking to various groups about OLLI.

We offered over 150 classes in 2019! The intrepid Concord Curriculum Committee, listening to feedback from participants, continued to plan and coordinate the history and film classes members love, while adding more arts and crafts and more technology. To accommodate OLLI members who are still in the workforce, we added evening and weekend classes.

Class assistants are vital to the success of OLLI classes. In 2019, the Concord Class Assistant team, to improve the function and experience of the role, asked our class assistants to participate in a session to talk about their experiences and perspectives. We learned what motivated them to be class assistants and gained suggestions for improvements to the role and the training. We listened and

included many of the participants’ suggestions, improving the class assistant role and hopefully encouraging more members to become class assistants.

The class experience is key to members. They want the information to best select their classes and may need assistance to register. We engaged members and nonmembers at two previews and were onsite in the computer room conducting registration clinics to assist members registering for classes.

Members indicated they welcome opportunities to socialize with fellow OLLI members. The Concord Events Committee planned and offered three themed Mug ‘n’ Muffin social/learning events, four Game Days, a holiday party and a Volunteer Recognition Ice Cream Social. The Lunch Bunch gathered to socialize and try out local restaurants, the book club continued to meet monthly, the Garden Friends special interest group (SIG) met to visit public and private gardens and a new hiking SIG took its first hike.

In 2019 we have striven to provide our members with the experience they seek and expect of OLLI. We recognize and thank our OLLI Concord volunteer committee members, our class assistants, our volunteers who we call upon for special assistance, and our fantastic presenters. Thank you to the OLLI staff for their guidance and assistance and thank you to Greater Concord members for supporting OLLI. You made 2019 a great year for OLLI in Concord.
