to the April 2019 edition of Connected.

This month Revd. Philip MacDonald links the story of Doubting Thomas to Brexit, and Tony Service looks forward to the Methodist Easter Services and the Christian Aid Walk of Reflection along the Wolds Way on 27th April.

Cathy Rodgers records how Junior Church has been learning to trust in God, and build & sail some splendid boats along the way.

Revd. Roy Shaw entertained the Mothers’ Union with tales of Kenya and the orphanage near to Bungoma in the west of the country, as well as modelling some fetching African shirts in the process!Martin Pearson & Tracey Copestake

look forward to their ceramic exhibition at St Wilfrid’s on 18th May where proceeds will be used to help repair the Church tower that is in need of some TLC.

Gordon Tute records the concert given by the Featherstone Male Voice Choir at St Wilfrid’s; a fantastic event by the sound of it.

There are also knitting patterns - tiny cycling jerseys - and material flames to cut out for the Pentecost Banner being constructed under the watchful gaze of Linda Crackles.

And finally I report on the Pancake Evening at St Wilf’s that I didn’t attend, and also the Bingo Night that I did.

Printed copies of Connected delivered to your door cost £5 a year (£4 for pensioners) by subscription, or you can pick up a copy for 75p in Brayton Post Office or from any of the Churches mentioned within these pages. Subscriptions run from June each year. You may also download Connected free from the St Wilfrid’s website www.stwilfridsparish.com. Welcome

Cheers Sue! It’s almost time for the annual Easter Activities at St Wilfrid’s, and the picture shows Sue Beevers enjoying a well earned tea break after creating the Easter Garden in 2018. Fingers crossed that Sue will be on hand to build the Easter Garden again in 2019!

Dear FriendsOur country is at a juncture where important decisions have to be taken which will have implications for us all and indeed for future generations. Many of us are no doubt frustrated by the indecisiveness of those involved in the Brexit process and the fact that our departure from the

European Union has turned out to be far less straightforward than we may have anticipated when the referendum took place almost 3 years ago. At that time each of us had to decide how we were going to vote. For all of us decision making is part of our lives. Some decisions are quite simple and can be easily made. Others are less so and require a great deal of thought and, in some instances, prayer. As I reflect on the Passion story,

it seems to me that it is at least in part a story of people having to make decisions. Those in authority had to decide how they were going to deal with Jesus and it seems that no-one really wanted to make a decision so consequently Jesus was passed from one person to another. Ultimately it was the crowd who,

in response to Pilate, decided that he should be crucified. Jesus’ disciples had to decide whether to stand closely by him, to follow at a distance or to run away. What they actually did varies depending on which gospel account you read but the decision still had to be made. Perhaps the greatest

decision was made by Jesus himself who decided to submit himself totally to the will and purpose of God in offering his life as an expression of God’s love for all humanity and as a sacrifice for the sin of the world. All these years later it is for each

of us to decide how we are going to respond to the story which we will listen to again as Holy Week approaches. According to the gospel writers, amongst those at the cross was a soldier who recognised that Jesus was no ordinary man. Matthew and Mark record him as saying that Jesus was the ‘son of God.’ Luke records him as saying that Jesus was ‘a righteous man.’ It is for each of us to decide who we believe Jesus to be and the decision we come to undoubtedly has implications for how we live our lives. One of the

Easter stories is of Thomas who, having doubted what he was told about Jesus having risen from the dead, came to face to face with the risen Christ and made his own decision when he said ‘My Lord and my God.’As we listen again to the familiar

stories of Passiontide and Easter

I hope that we will be helped to make our own decisions and that, in the words of the old gospel song, we will say ‘I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.’

With warm Christian greetings,

Philip Macdonald

Methodist NewsAnniversary Weekend (May 18/19) St Wilfrid’s maybe the oldest building in Brayton by several centuries but the next oldest is certainly our little village chapel, built in 1844. Next month, we are celebrating 175 years of Christian witness in Brayton and we are planning a great weekend of events, details of which will be in next month’s “Connected”. We want to make this a village event, not just a local chapel event, and we hope that loads of people will share this exciting time with us. Put the date in your diary and watch this space for more information next month.Holy Week and Easter Services (April 18/19/21) Our Circuit has a number of special services during Holy Week (the week before Easter) in which many of our Brayton congregation participate. On Maundy Thursday (April 18) there will be a special service with Holy Communion at Howden Methodist Church, remembering Jesus’ last night before his crucifixion. On Good Friday (April 19) there will be another special service at Portholme Church in Selby, reflecting on the events of that first Good Friday. Both services are at 7.30 pm and everybody is very welcome to join us for either or both of these services.

On Easter Sunday at Brayton, we will have an Easter Holy Communion service at 8:30am, followed by breakfast (the best breakfast you will find anywhere!) and then Easter worship at 10:30am. As always, we welcome everybody to join us for either or both services – or just come for breakfast!Good Friday Walk of Witness (April 19) The Churches Together Good Friday Walk of Witness will meet at Portholme Church in Selby at 11:30am for a short time of

worship, after which we then walk through the Market Cross Centre into the Market Place for an open-

air service at 12:00 noon, led this year by St James’ Church. Last year, around a hundred people from our local churches came together for this act of witness and we would encourage as many as possible to join us and to share in this special service on what is one of the most important days in the Christian year.Christian Aid – A Reflective Walk along the Wolds Way (April 27) This is a new venture by Christian Aid and will be an opportunity to spend time with God and others in some very beautiful surroundings. The Walk will start at Millington Church (near Pocklington) at 11:00am on Saturday, April 27 and take in the Wolds Way to Givendale. Some of us are hoping to take part but I know that Christian Aid would welcome lots of people from all churches, and even if you are not involved in a church, to participate and enjoy this walk with God. Further details from the local Christian Aid Coordinator, Steph Cooper, at [email protected]; tel: 07970 735861.

In God We TrustIn Junior Church, on Sunday 17th February, we were thinking about trusting God. First, we played a game in which we had to lead each other blindfolded through a maze. I put my trust in Robert and he gave me excellent instructions to get through the maze safely. I only bumped into a few chairs!

Next, we told the story of Jesus Calming the Storm using small world figures and a big blue sheet for the Sea of Galilee. We all helped to create a big storm by shaking the sheet.

The older children then discussed what it means to trust God whilst the younger children made their own boats with special ‘Trust in God.’ sails. We then had fun sailing our boats. The older children soon joined in, making some impressive rafts. They also made a boat out of play dough. Surprisingly enough that didn’t float!

Junior Church meets on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Sundays of every month at 10:30am in the hall, during the service. On the 2nd Sunday of the month we have a Family Communion service.

In March Revd. Roy Shaw led us in a meditation based on Matthew 7 “Ask, and God will give to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open for you. ..…” and we were especially asked to think about our “Heart’s Desire”.

Reverend Roy then gave us a wonderful insight into his annual trips to Kenya to support an orphanage near Bungoma, close to the Ugandan border (see map). The 9 hour flight from Heathrow to Nairobi is followed by a further flight to Kisumu and then a 3 hour drive which ends on mud roads. The 35 children at the orphanage are always excited to see Roy, and all his luggage, arrive. They know there will be presents in the form of clothes, footballs, pencils etc. and they are always very grateful.

Roy was first invited to Bungoma in 2011 to help with clergy education but his Parish at the time, Marston Moor, decided to support the nearby orphanage after they had seen photographs of the mud huts and children sleeping on the floor. The orphanage is close to the equator and at an altitude of 5000 feet. There is beautiful countryside and an average temp of 24-25°C. A purpose built brick dining block (see image) is a relatively new addition. Roy is now a Trustee of the orphanage and he was also made an honorary MU member. The Mothers’ Union in Kenya do lots to keep families and communities together.

The main image shows Roy wearing one of his many Kenyan shirts. Trendy!

English is the main language in Kenya although Swahili is the native tongue. Traditional words on first meeting are:

Karibu - welcomeJambo - hello!Habari - how are you?Goodbye - kwaheri

Karibu kwa MU Baba Roy!*

In April we shall meet at Escrick Village Hall at 7:00pm on Wednesday 10th April, to join with the Escrick group and others in the Deanery to hear about MULOA - “Mothers’ Union Listening, Observing, Acting”, and it is the name we use to explore the essence of what it is to be in Mothers’ Union.

Who are we as Mothers’ Union? Whose lives are, and should, we be helping? What difference should we be making in people’s lives? How do we most effectively make that difference?

From the process, a framework and direction for the Mothers’ Union will emerge that reflects the realities of local communities. We hope to identify key priorities for our policies, programmes, and faith work, and commit to sharing information on the impact of these across the movement.

If anyone needs a lift to Escrick please contact Barbara or Lynn.

Saturday 23rd February 2019This was a superb evening of

robust, and harmonious singing – along with solo items of songs, and amusing monologues.

The event was given by the choir towards raising funds for local four year old Elliot Kennedy. He had life

changing surgery last November, and his mother and grandmother need to raise £20,000 to finance the necessary physiotherapy – which cannot be funded by the NHS.

The five representatives of the St Wilfrid’s community who attended thoroughly enjoyed the varied

programme, and the result of the evening was in excess of £240.

You missed a treat.

Was She Worth It! 56!Bingo eh? Who knew it could be so complicated? Horizontal line anywhere, horizontal line in the middle row only, full house, all 4 corners plus odd-numbers only. OK, so I made up the last category, but the Laws of Association Bingo had to be consulted on more than one occasion as the evening progressed.

Some 32 folks attended the latest St Wilf’s Social Committee event on the evening of Saturday 16th March. And great fun it was too. As each game progressed the tension mounted - you could hear the sound of poised dobbers! - until a strangled cry of ‘here’ signalled a winning card. No prizes found their way to my table but they appeared to be mainly potted plants.

At half time we enjoyed Dawson’s pies, mushy peas and gravy, all of which were delicious. I also checked the 6 Nations Rugby to discover that Scotland had over turned a 31-0 score to lead England 31-38. Unbelievable.

In total £106 was raised for Church funds. But as with all of the Social Committee events we all won with the friendly and social interaction of the night.

Toss That Pancake! Now let me state at the outset that I didn’t attend the Shrove Tuesday pancake evening( I had a poorly head cold...). Held just before the St Wilfrid’s Parochial Church Council meeting on Tuesday 5th March but looking at the photographs supplied by Claire Hodgson it appears to have been a success.

The evening was choreographed by Iain Nutt at the Wurlitzer Hotpoint Cooker. Maestro Iain, using two professional standard frying pans, one for each hand, knocked out just over 80 pancakes in a single hour, which works out at a pancake every 45 seconds! Phew!

I am also able to report that, having inspected the kitchen area in the Paris Hall, that no tossed pancakes were struck the ceiling, and the floor was very clean! Fantastic work Mr Nutt!

Somewhere between 20 to 25 people attended raising £50 for the Big Pancake Party Charity which helps to reduce food poverty in the United Kingdom. A good result for what appears to have been a great evening.

Now I wonder how the PCC meeting went...

On Thursday 2nd May 2019, Selby once again welcomes the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race. This year the day’s race will finish outside the Abbey. It’s probably too late now to start training for the race, but you can participate & celebrate the event - particularly if you can knit!

Anyone with an interest in knitting, no matter what skill level, can create simple knitted jerseys to a specific pattern in the colours of the main Tour de Yorkshire jerseys. These will be attached to the Abbey railings to

decorate the town. The jerseys come in four

different colours - green, red, grey but the main colour is mid blue. The Abbey is hoping for mainly blue jerseys. Knitting sessions will be held in the Abbey Coffee Shop on Tuesdays 1pm-4pm, and also in the Salvation Army Church on Thursdays 10:30am-12:30pm

So why not give the pattern below a try?

This is something for everyone to do, of every age or gender.

Use the flame shape as a template to cut out a piece of material either plain or patterned. Use fabric which you would otherwise throw away or take some from the box provided. Please keep to the flame size above.

You may then decorate the flame

using whatever you like, for example embroidery or marker pen, or you may wish to leave it plain.

Holding your finished fabric flame offer yourself to God, including those things which you feel hold you back from being the child he wants you to be. When you have prayed with your flame return it to the box

at the back of church. Please return your flames by 23rd

April 2019Thank you.
