Introducing the Spirit of SodexoRecognising our people and the inspiring work that we all do, each and every day, is at

the heart of our business – playing a key role in employee engagement and driving our performance and growth, and a central part of our Nurturing Talent pillar of our Focus on Growth strategic agenda.

That’s why we invest so heavily in our various recognition schemes and events – from daily on-the-spot awards via Recognising You to annual events, such as last year’s Star Awards and Service Excellence Awards. These occasions give us the opportunity to celebrate the remarkable individuals and teams making stand-out contributions to improving the Quality of Life of our clients, consumers and colleagues – and our company as a whole.

As you may be aware, this year, we decided to bring together our two previous employee award ceremonies – the Service Excellence Awards and Star Awards – into a single recognition programme and awards dinner at the end of the year: the Spirit of Sodexo Awards.

Complete with a new set of 20 award categories (though you will recognise some favourites that we’ve carried over from the Star and Service Excellence Awards), there are now more ways than ever to recognise our colleagues. The new set of categories has been developed to welcome entries from both contract-based teams on sites and those working in central functions, across both frontline and managerial levels. This is truly a recognition event for us all.

Nominations should be made via Recognising You on the Sodexo Reward Hub. However, please note that, unlike our previous award programmes, the Spirit of Sodexo Awards will be looking closely at both what you do and how you do it – with a sharp focus on rewarding and recognising those Sodexo employees best living the Service Spirit, Team Spirit and Spirit of Progress values and behaviours in all that they do.

So, good luck with your entries, and I hope you are excited and feeling inspired by this new awards programme. I am very much looking forward to reading the nominations during the national judging stage, and the chance to celebrate the Spirit of Sodexo together at the end of this year!

Sean HaleyRegional Chair, Sodexo UK and Ireland

Awards Overview

IntroductionThis booklet outlines the new Spirit of Sodexo Awards categories and timeline. It’s designed to help you to identify the values, behaviours, actions and practices that the judges will be looking for in each category, so you can identify where your nominees’ talents might lie, choose the right category and help you craft your nominations. Nominations should be a minimum of 250 words, and not exceed 500 words – excluding supporting evidence and anecdotes. There are some helpful ideas for the content and evidence that you might wish to include in your entry, within the category criteria.

There will be three judging stages – Divisional, Segment and National – with most categories being judged at each level. The Kathy Ridgard, Alan Tilley and Quality of Life award categories will be judged only at National level. Further details on each of the categories and the nomination criteria can be found from page 4 onwards.

Remember, the Spirit of Sodexo Awards are framed around our Sodexo values and the behaviours that relate to them – and the judges will be looking for the best examples of these values and behaviours in action.

How to nominateOnce you have selected a category, please visit the

Spirit of Sodexo Awards nomination form page within Recognising You, which can be found in the Sodexo Reward Hub.

If you do not have access to Recognising You, you can submit your nomination via this form or by scanning this QR code.

HEALTH & SAFETY INITIATIVE

This award recognises a Sodexo initiative that has delivered significant improvement to the health, safety or wellbeing of people and/or premises.

This category is an opportunity to shout about a project, activity, event, process implementation or other innovation that has raised the bar in health and safety and is helping Sodexo to maintain our industry-leading standards.

Entries can come from both contract sites and central functions, and should:

n Reference how the initiative was conceived and if it addressed a direct need (either Sodexo and/or client)

n Demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach to developing and implementing the solution

n Outline what others could learn from the initiativen Illustrate any teamwork with clients or customers regarding

implementation, if applicablen Showcase health and safety compliance levelsn Reflect on any lessons learned.

The judges will be keen to see evidence of a positive impact that can be measured or quantified.

HEALTH & SAFETY CHAMPIONOur Health and Safety Champion will be an individual whose working practices and attitude fully embody the zero-harm and safety culture that Sodexo strives to achieve.

We believe that every employee can help move the dial in this vital area, and the award is open to nominations from employees working at all levels, and across all segments and central functions.

To be considered, the individual will have demonstrated measurable benefits to Sodexo through embedding a positive culture of health and safety within their local environment or area of responsibility.

The key focus of the entry should be to demonstrate how the individual has gone above and beyond the minimum mandatory standards for health and safety compliance. Alongside exemplary performance, we are looking for individuals who also espouse the Service Spirit behaviours, bringing a positive attitude, agility, and a sense of ownership and accountability to everything they do.

Entries should demonstrate examples of the benefit and/or positive impact of the nominee’s actions and behaviours on-site, and beyond if applicable.

EXCELLENCE IN FOOD SERVICES This award recognises the importance of our market-leading food and beverage business, and celebrates the people who play their part in delivering excellence each and every day.

From our world-class chefs, talented food service assistants, and our brilliant baristas, to our hospitality heroes and passionate porters who keep our kitchens ticking, this category is open to anyone who provides catering services to customers face-to-face at our client sites, day or night.

Nominations from both individuals and teams are welcome. To be considered, you must be able to actively demonstrate how the nominee has taken Service Spirit, and the associated behaviours, to the next level.

Entries could include examples of outstanding personal or team performance, service delivery that has consistently exceeded customer expectations, customer and/or client testimony, and/or best practice activities that have enhanced the food and beverage offering on-site such as menu innovation, ethical food sourcing, or improvements to dining environments.

EXCELLENCE IN FACILITIES MANAGEMENT The Excellence in Facilities Management (FM) category recognises outstanding performance across our key FM services: reception, security, housekeeping, cleaning, engineering, maintenance, fitness, helpdesk and laboratory services.

It can be an individual or team operating just one service, or those involved in delivering multiple services on a client site.

To be considered, nominees must be able to demonstrate delivery of the service/offer(s), compliance and strict adherence to policies and procedures.

In order to stand out from the crowd, the judges will be looking for the best examples of how Service Spirit is proudly interpreted on the ground, listening to our clients, being responsive to their needs, and delivering on our promises.

EXCELLENCE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE

Excellence in Customer Service recognises a frontline employee that has consistently delivered high levels of client and customer satisfaction over the last 12 months, modelling our values and behaviours in all that they do – acting as an ambassador for Sodexo.

We work with a diverse range of customers each and every day – from prison residents, hospital patients, VIP event guests, city workers, soldiers, school children and countless more. This award aims to celebrate the successes of our customer-facing colleagues, shining a light on those who go the extra mile to delight their customers every day, and how they do it – whoever they may be.

If you know someone, or a team, that is the very best in the business when it comes to customer service, this is the category for them. Of course, we won’t just take your word for it. The

strongest entries will be able to provide detailed evidence in the form of satisfaction level statistics, customer testimonials, surveys, awards or assessments.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AWARD

This category recognises a contract team who has worked together consistently to turn around a low performing or loss-making contract.

The team should be able to demonstrate how they have achieved the result via bold and tenacious operational delivery, teamwork and leadership through the contract management and operational excellence (CMOE) framework and its associated tools (e.g. iPromise).

Judges will look for a clear solution pathway, from identification and understanding of the problem, through to solution design and delivery, to results and impact.

Measurement criteria will be based on evidence of methodical application of the CMOE process, skilled labour management techniques and, most crucially, the financial improvement achieved.

BETTER TOMORROW AWARD Sodexo’s global Better Tomorrow 2025 commitments reflect our three roles: as an employer, as a service provider, and as a corporate citizen.

The Better Tomorrow Award seeks to recognise a team or individual who has made a significant impact on employees, clients or communities in striving to achieve one or more of the UK & Ireland’s Corporate Responsibility objectives.

Nominations in this category are likely to be championing sustainable practices, either locally or more broadly, or taking bold steps to help customers live more healthy lives - including:

n Removal of single-use-plasticsn Promoting plant-based mealsn Active use of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through

procurementn Actions to reduce carbon emissionsn Fighting hunger and malnutrition through Stop Hungern Food waste reduction

You don’t need to lead a team or manage a department to have been judged to have made an impression either – initiatives large and small can make a difference. It’s the willingness to take action, play a leading role, or inspire others to make a change that matters.

Entries should outline how the initiative or activity was conceived, developed and implemented, supported with impact testimonials, facts, figures and results against any set targets.

SPIRIT OF INCLUSION AWARD

The Spirit of Inclusion Award celebrates Sodexo’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and respected, both within our workforce and the wider community.

This category invites nominations from individuals or teams, at any level, who have acted as role models of inclusive behaviours. Nominees may have been active as part of one of Sodexo’s diversity and inclusion employee networks – PRIDE, Origins, Generations, Sodexo Working Parents and SoTogether – or have fostered inclusion in other ways, either as an individual or team. Strong entries will give clear examples of how the individual or team has promoted diversity and inclusion, and/or articulate how a particular initiative has contributed to developing an inclusive environment for others.

Judges will look for evidence of how nominees have gone the extra mile in celebrating diversity, provided opportunities or helped individuals from diverse groups to overcome barriers and maximise their potential.

Entries can relate to activities that impact employees in the workplace, our customers/clients or our communities, and can highlight long-term initiatives introduced, or one-off events and projects.

NURTURING TALENT AWARD This category is open to people who have excelled at helping others to develop and grow.

At an operational level, candidates could be employees who have dedicated their time to developing apprentices, acted as mentors, or devised learning programmes or pathways that benefit their immediate colleagues, or the business as a whole.

For nominees at management level, we are looking for individuals who have made a measurable difference to our business by role-modeling one or more of the company’s Focus on Five standards:

1) Communication2) Recognition3) Performance4) Learning & Development 5) Clear Direction

In each case, judges will want to see clear evidence of how the nominee has motivated others, and engaged them with the company’s vision and values – particularly Team Spirit.

SITE OF THE YEAR

Our site teams range from a skeleton crew running a single service on a remote site, to a 1,000+ multi-service FM team in a large hospital.

In the search for Site of the Year, we are looking to recognise the quality of the service and level of performance achieved for the client by one of our star sites – individuals, teams and different functions pulling together to deliver great services for our clients.

This could include consistently smashing KPI targets; exceeding growth forecasts; delivering an exceptional event or project; showing a proactive approach and solution to a client challenge;

working in partnership to achieve an ambitious goal; improving Quality of Life, or adding value or additional services for example.

Judges will be keen to see evidence of multiple successes over the previous 12-month period, supported with statistics and testimonials.

TEAM OF THE YEAR Strong teamwork is what keeps Sodexo ticking. Working together successfully means recognising and combining our skills and knowledge with other team members to help ensure Sodexo’s success.

This award is designed to celebrate a team that has worked flexibly and collaboratively, has a ‘can-do’ approach, and delivers above and beyond the expected levels of performance.

The category is open to both contract-based operational teams and department teams from central functions. It can be a team of 2 or a team of 200 – the key distinction will be the degree to which the Team Spirit behaviours have been role-modelled to a superior standard.

Entries should highlight effective partnership with the wider business and delivery for customers – whether that’s an external client or internal business team. We are also looking for clear examples of good communication; transparency; honesty and mutual respect; diversity and solidarity – with everyone pulling together to achieve team goals.

QUALITY OF LIFE AWARD Improving the Quality of Life of our clients and customers is at the heart of our business. This new, unique award invites nominations directly from our clients – via email submissions and video testimonials.

This award category is open to anyone, and looks to recognise individuals and teams, who have been instrumental over the last 12 months in building relationships with clients and consumers, demonstrating Sodexo behaviours and values, and working tirelessly to support both client and Sodexo priorities.

Linked directly to our Spirit of Progress values and behaviours, nominations will ask clients to show how they feel this Sodexo individual or team has excelled in key related behaviours and activities such as:

n Finding new and different ways to better serve clients and customers, e.g. following an Annual Expectations Meeting

n Translating ideas quickly and effectively into action, including bringing innovation from other contracts or initiatives

n Constantly looking to add value and create growthn Being willing to challenge the status quo, raise issues and

encourage new thinkingn Approaching the client/Sodexo partnership with an

entrepreneurial spirit.

Successful nominations will show how a site or team has put outstanding emphasis on client partnerships, and include evidence of positive results and feedback from clients that tell a story of positive outcomes and effective collaboration.

Entries should be submitted via email to: [email protected]

With the subject line: Quality of Life Award nomination.

GROWTH AWARD

From customer-facing employees with inspired ideas for boosting sales at their sites to operational managers or transversal teams with revenue at the beating heart of their roles, this award honours the outstanding sales growth performers within the business.

Within this category’s broad scope, entries must clearly demonstrate how nominees have put innovative ideas into practice, achieving tangible results such as exceeding sales targets, demonstrable year-on-year growth or excellence in business development.

We are looking for entries that put the Spirit of Progress behaviours firmly in the spotlight. For customer-facing nominees, this translates into examples of employees taking the initiative, going the extra mile and looking for opportunities for growth within their daily routine. At managerial level, there should be clear evidence of a strategic commitment to ‘dare to think innovatively’ and ‘challenge with humility’.

RISING STAR AWARD This award recognises an outstanding employee who has been in their current role for less than 12 months at the time of nomination, who has demonstrated significant personal growth and development, quickly impressed those around them, and is making bold strides in establishing themselves, both as a career-focused professional and as an ambassador for Sodexo.

We are looking for the best examples of individuals demonstrating energy, drive and a desire to keep on learning, whether that is a young new recruit excelling in an apprenticeship or a loyal, longer-serving employee who is thriving in a new role.

The nominees will be assessed on:

n Grasping opportunities to develop and learn

n Demonstrating personal and professional curiosityn Application of skills and learning within their new role

n What further development they are taking, or have planned

n How they have positively contributed to their contract (for operationally based) or department (for functionally based)

n Living the Sodexo values

PROGRESS AWARD

The Progress Award is open to individuals, managers or teams who have delivered innovation or business improvement that has transformed a specific business area/contract, or the wider Sodexo organisation.

The category aims to celebrate innovations and improvements of varying degrees – where a site-based improvement is as valued as one that has a company-wide impact.

What nominations must have in common is a drive to create and deliver competitive advantage, improve overall financial performance or help employees deliver better services and customer care.

Entries must be able to clearly identify the approach taken in regard to the innovation or improvement, demonstrating an analysis of the situation, how the approach was selected and implemented, and providing evidence of measurable improvement regarding the impact and value it has achieved.

REGIONAL CHAIR’S SPECIAL COMMENDATIONThis special commendation award invites nominations for an individual or team that has made a truly outstanding contribution to Sodexo in the past 12 months.

Maybe you know someone who has acted heroically – perhaps saved a life? Or an employee who has remained 100% committed to their role through illness? Maybe a team who has overcome a huge personal or professional hurdle, to come out fighting at the other side?

This is an extraordinary award, designed to reward extraordinary effort, attitude and dedication. Last year’s award was presented to the security and switchboard teams from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in recognition of their outstanding reaction on the night of the Manchester Arena bombing.

The award will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the night, and will be judged at national level only – by members of the Regional Leadership Committee, including our Regional Chair, Sean Haley.

So, whether it is in recognition of a one-off project, praise following a headlining grabbing event or a triumph in the face of adversity, the nominees and circumstances should be exceptional.

ALAN TILLEY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Alan Tilley has become a symbol of dedication and loyalty to Sodexo, qualities that we reflect on every year in this award set up in his name.

Alan worked for the company for over 40 years and was awarded an OBE for his services to hospitality. This category recognises those long-servers who perfectly embody that impressive history of consistent performance.

Judged by the Regional Leadership Committee, it is given to an individual who has served Sodexo consistently well for a considerable number of years (likely to be more than 15), and who has focused solidly on the performance of their duties over that long period. We are looking for someone with a wonderful Sodexo story to tell, brimming with success, pride and love for their long career with us.

KATHY RIDGARD AWARD The Kathy Ridgard Award recognises the crème de la crème of service excellence when it comes to delivering services – be they Food, FM or Customer Service – at our client sites each and every day.

Kathy was a former director of Sodexo’s Centre of Excellence who sadly died in 2013. We established this award so we can continue to share the incredible passion for people development and talent recognition that shone from Kathy.

Whether it’s a hospital porter making patients’ days a little brighter, a school maintenance worker keeping kids safe, a prison custody officer going the extra mile, or a barista making a knock-out impression with customers in a city office, we want to find the best-of-the-best when it comes to service excellence.

Aside from being fantastic with their clients and customers, nominees will stand out from the crowd as truly personifying the values of Sodexo, and living them every day in their attitude to both their colleagues and clients.

They will frequently draw comments on their professionalism, willingness, knowledge, and the way they make others feel valued.

MANAGER OF THE YEAR Sodexo’s Manager of the Year Award recognises an individual operating at peak performance level in management, customer service delivery and business operations.

The award will be measured on the manager’s performance against key leadership targets, including (but not exclusively) our Focus on Growth strategic priorities – client and consumer centricity; operational efficiency; nurturing talent; anchoring corporate responsibility; empowerment and accountability; and measurement and improvement.

Beyond performance, we will be looking for an individual who exemplifies all the Sodexo values, and espouses the qualities consistent with Sodexo’s managerial behaviours.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Do you know an employee who has consistently gone the extra mile in the performance of their duties over the last 12 months and/or shown commitment above and beyond the call of duty?

We are aiming to crown the 2019 Employee of the Year from a cast of 35,000 people in Sodexo in the UK & Ireland.

Judges are looking for that special person Sodexo simply ‘couldn’t do without’ – a first-class team player whose exemplary on-the-job performance every day has made them an asset on many levels – to their team or department, their site, their customers and the Sodexo business as a whole.

The award is open to those at both frontline and managerial level, across contract-based site teams and our central functions.

Nominations should evidence how the individual captures each of the Sodexo values, and is an outstanding ambassador for Sodexo and the delivery of Quality of Life services, both in what they do, and how they do it.
