STADIUM DESCRIPTION

Merle Norman Stadium is the on-campus home to the USC women’s beach volleyball program. Located on the east side of University Park Campus on Figueroa Street across from the Galen Center, it features three courts with sand from the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Ground was broken to build the new venue in July of 2012 under the generous donations of Jack and Helen Nethercutt and John and Melinda Muller, and a large sum from an anonymous donor. A USC alumnus, Jack Nethercutt served as vice president of marketing and later President of Merle Norman Cosmetics in 1973. The stadium is named for Nethercutt’s great aunt and namesake of the cosmetics corporation, Merle Nethercutt Norman.

4. Event Information4.1. TEAM AREAS

Designated team areas will be located at the facility. Each team will be provided a tent in the designated team area. You will have access to your team tent beginning on the practice day. Team hospitality and refueling station will be available with assorted fruits, bars, nuts, and beverages.

4.2. PARTICIPANT MEMENTO – GIFTING SUITEA gifting suite will be set up in a tent within the facility on the practice day, Wednesday, April 24, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please be sure to make time for your teams to stop by the suite to choose their participation gifts. All orders will be taken on site and will be shipped directly to the individual, two weeks following the Championships.

4.3. TICKETS & CREDENTIALSAdmission to the championship is free. All seating is general admission, with the exception of space reserved for Pac-12 sponsors.

Teams will receive credentials based on their travel party form. These will be distributed at the logistical meeting. The credentials will provide access to team areas at Merle Norman Courts.

4.4. TRAVEL PARTY FORMThe team travel party form can be found on page 11 of this document. It must be completed and returned to Sarah Gates at USC ([email protected]) and Chris Dawson ([email protected]) no later than 12 noon Pacific time on Monday, April 22, 2019.

4.5. TEAM BRACKETThe bracket for the Pac-12 championship is attached on page 10. Matches will start at the designated time. If the earlier match runs long, there will be a minimum of 12 minutes between matches for warm up.

4.6. MATCH FORMATAs agreed at the coaches’ meeting, the following match format will be followed:• Duals start no earlier than the scheduled time as shown on bracket. • Assumes an :02 start past the scheduled time for all matches.• Duals are played only to completion; any match in progress suspended when dual is decided. • Set intervals: 3 minutes.• Technical or team time outs may be shortened (all TV advertising in breaks between duals).

4.7. AWARDS & AWARDS CEREMONYAn awards ceremony will take place on Court 1 immediately following the team competition.

4.8. LOGISTICAL MEETINGA logistical meeting will take place at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in Meeting Room 216 of the USC Hotel. Head coaches are required to attend. There will be light refreshments served in lieu of a coaches’ dinner.

4.9. PARKINGParking is available in the McCarthy Way Structure, directly behind Merle Norman Stadium. Large vans and busses will not fit in the structure. If you plan on bringing an oversized vehicle please reach out to Sarah Gates ([email protected]) by April 1st for alternative parking.

4.10. ACADEMIC SERVICES/PROCTORING EXAMSThe Conference academic advisors established the following best practices to assist in providing personnel to proctor tests and exams during championships, as well as secure locations. Note that the host is not required to provide exam proctors, but will make the best effort to do so.· As a best practice, each academic director was willing to do whatever they could to facilitate or proctor official make-up exams for visiting student-athletes.· The Academic Directors should be the main contacts on the host campus to serve as proctors or to make arrangements for proctoring and other academic services for student-athletes who are on the road competing in conference championships.· Their names, emails and work cell phone numbers should be listed in the event’s handbook or staff directory so that each coach/student-athlete has this information ahead of time. Offering this service, while not a requirement, should be considered an official part of hosting a conference championship (e.g., supplying towels, paying the officials, hiring a photographer).•. Any requests for assistance should be made at least two weeks prior to the event to the primary contact at USC: Denise Kwok - [email protected]



5. Sports Medicine5.1. ATHLETIC TRAINING SERVICES

Medical staff will be on-site for the duration of competition including practice day. Gatorade, water, modality, medical supplies, and ice bags will be available for student-athletes. Physicians will also be on side during the competition. Medical personnel and equipment will be located near the team areas. Please contact Shannon Murphy ([email protected]) with any questions.
