Details: Individual was at Marion Reservoir fishing for about 11 hours across two days. On 6/1/2019, individual began to experience fatigue, fever, headache, couch, wheezing, and chest tightness. Individual had dermal contact with water and potentially inhaled. Did not seek medical care. This lake was on Watch status at the time of exposure.

Details: Child was swimming at Lake Afton. Child inhaled and had dermal contact with water. The day after exposure, the child experienced fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, cough, vomiting, and rash. Sought medical treatment, other causes of illness were ruled out. Water sample taken after complaint notification indicated Watch status.

Details: Child was swimming at Sabetha City Lake. The next day, the child experienced fever, headache, loss of appetite, nasal congestion, and watery eyes. BOW conducted a jar test on lake once we were notified of the complaint; jar test came back clear.

Complaint # 4Date of Exposure: 8/22/2019Lake: Retention PondAge Group: Multiple Exposures

Details: Three individuals were exposed to water. Two potentially became ill after exposure, other’s medical record has no indication of illness from HAB. The two that potentially became ill were not willing to interview, therefore symptoms are unknown. Water samples indicate microcystin below KDHE watch level (<4.0 µg/L) and the EPA infant and preschool threshold (<0.3 µg/L). Based on location and function of pond, impression is that any associated illness would be bacteria related.

Complaint # 5Date of Exposure: 9/13/2019Lake: Clarion LakeAge Group: Adult

Details: Individual was fishing at Clarion Lake for 3 hours. Individual inhaled, ingested, and had dermal contact with water. Later that night, the individual began to experience fatigue, dizziness, sore throat, chest tightness, as well as headache, chest pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting the next day. Individual did not seek medical care. BOW sampled water, the sample indicated a non-detect for microcystin (<0.5 µg/L) and photos showed no evidence of a HAB.

Details: Dog had dermal contact with water ingested at Lake Shawnee for about 15 minutes. Dog began experiencing fever, wheezing, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, loss of appetite, and redness/puffiness about 24 hours after exposure. Medical care was sought. Lake Shawnee was on Watch status at this time.

Details: Dog ingested water from potable water at site. Dog began experiencing lethargy, loss of appetite, and behavior change after exposure. Dog received blood tests, IV treatment, and medicine for muscle tremors; veterinarian thinks HAB-associated unlikely. No visual evidence of HAB, no other complaints for potable water spout.
