What is 4-H?  Have you ever told someone that you’re in 4-H and had them ask you this question?  Frequently, when I’m asked what I do for a living and answer with, “I’m the Cowley County 4-H Extension Agent”, I get a funny or questioning look accompanied by the question, “What is that?”.

How do you answer this question?  Those of us who have grown up in 4-H know what our organization is, but it’s still a difficult question to answer.  Do you tell people that 4-H is a club?  Is it a project that you do at the fair?  Is it meetings that you attend monthly?  While some of these are good ways to describe what we do, they don’t really answer the question, “What is 4-H?”.

Most people think 4-H is only for farm kids.  They think you have to live on a farm and/or raise animals to be a part

of 4-H.  While 4-H has a history rooted in agriculture, we are not an organization limited to farm/rural families.  4-H offers so many opportunities to our local youth to grow in many different ways and learn about all kinds of different things.  With projects in Science, Arts, Engineering, Technology and Natural Resources, kids have the opportunity to learn about anything they want to.  The opportunities in 4-H are endless.

So, how do you answer the question, “What is 4-H?”  4-H is a network of families that grows great kids.  In order to explain and model what 4-H is to others, we must think of the 4-H program beyond the projects that we do at the fair. 4-H is a program that prepares youth for school, work and life, not just an exhibit at the fair.  As we begin 2019, let’s think about sustaining

our organization for the future by modeling what 4-H is really about, a network of great families and great kids involved with hands-on learning opportunities.  Encourage your friends to Join the Club!!

State 4-H Scholarships Kansas 4-H Scholarships are available to Kansas 4-H members who are continuing their education in a post-secondary institution. The 2019 Scholarships will be due on February 1, 2019 to the State 4-H Office and require an Extension Agent signature. All scholarships must be submitted in full and should be on the 2019 Kansas 4-H Scholarship Application which can be found at http://www.kansas4-h.org/resources/4-h-library/awards-and-recognition/scholarships.html

New 4-H Publication Writing 4-H project goals should take place towards the beginning of the 4-H year, and NOT right before KAP/record books are due. This publication will guide the 4-H member as they write and set 4-H project goals for the year ahead. Once the young person has selected their 4-H projects, they should plan out what they would like to learn and accomplish. It is very helpful when this process is done with the guidance of an adult volunteer or junior teen leader. Setting measurable goals will help ensure that the 4-H member has a positive 4-H project learning experience.

This publication may be filled out by hand, or is available as a form-fillable pdf. There is room on the publication for up to four project areas, but 4-Hers are encouraged to attach additional pages as necessary. You can find the Setting 4-H Project Goals publication at the KSRE bookstore. ( https://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/Item.aspx?catId=1007&pubId=21479 )

Cowley County 4-H Day One of the first big events of the year is County 4-H Day. This is an opportunity for all 4-H members to share their speaking skills, knowledge, talents, and creativity before a larger audience. Cowley County 4-H Day will be Saturday, February 9th, at the Winfield Middle School (130 Viking Blvd ) Any 4-H member can participate in as many categories as they choose. There is no pre-requisite or qualifying competition required.  Registration is due by 5:00pm Friday, January 25th. Register online at https://bit.ly/2Bswwn6.

There are 2 main categories -- music/talent and presentations.  Music/Talent will include: Piano Solos Instrumental Solos and Ensembles Band Vocal Solo Vocal Ensemble Club Chorus Skits and Plays Readings Dance Other Talent Presentations include: Demonstration/Illustrated Talk Project Talk Public Speaking Impromptu Public Speaking  Multimedia Presentation Show and Share Pickle Power Model Meeting For information on how to give a Demonstration/Illustrated Talk visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiLffvgoVtw

Project Talks, Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks Project Talks are given by Intermediate and Junior members about a 4-H project that they are enrolled in.  A Demonstration or Illustrated Talk demonstrates or shows how to do something.  When giving a Demonstration, the member will show how to do something live.  An Illustrated Talk uses posters or visual aids to show how to do something.  For example, a member may give a Demonstration on making cinnamon rolls and would have all the ingredients available and actually make cinnamon rolls.  A member giving an Illustrated Talk may want to teach how to set goals, so they would use posters illustrating and outlining the steps.

Musical Talent Musical Talent including Instrumental, Vocal and Piano solos and ensembles will be presented in the Band and Vocal Rooms.  **Please note that no private practice rooms are available.  You are welcome to find a quiet hallway or warm up in the Commons Area.  Please arrive early and give yourself plenty of time to warm up prior to your scheduled performance.

Multimedia Presentation Multimedia presentations are an opportunity for members to present information about a project utilizing electronic or media tools to enhance the presentation.

Multimedia Presentations include Powerpoint, Video or other media.  All Multimedia Presentations will be in one division, rather than separated by age.

Reading Reading is an opportunity for members to share their creativity and dramatic reading abilities utilizing a favorite story, book excerpt or poem.  A Reading does not have to be memorized.

Show and Share Show and Share is a non-competitive division for first and second-year 4-H members.  Participants present information on a topic to a “judge” to receive feedback.  The topic does not have to be project-related.   Skits, Drama, One-Act Plays This is a great opportunity for a club or group of 4-H’ers to work together and have some fun!  Write your own short play, or find one that is fun to do.  Drama gives members a way to be creative and work together as a club or group.

Other Talent Do you have another talent that doesn’t really fit in anywhere else?  Comedy acts, puppet shows, marionettes, mimes, etc. fit in this category.

Model Meeting Clubs are invited to test their Parliamentary Procedure skills and learn how to properly conduct a meeting by taking part in the Model Meeting.  A club presents a meeting before a judge complete with business, motions, and a program.  This is a great opportunity to learn how to be better organized as a club and learn how a meeting works. Pickle Power Pickle Power is a unique division for younger 4-H members and Clover Buds (5 and 6-year-olds).  Each member is given two situations to choose from.  It puts the member “in a pickle” so to speak and they are asked to explain to the judge what they would do.  Pickle Power is an opportunity for youth to speak one-on-one with an adult and discuss their decision.  It helps youth to go through the decision making process and develop their reasoning skills.  Pickle Power is a non-competitive division and each participant receives a prize.

Favorite Family Foods Show Eating together encourages family togetherness, provides better nutrition and is enjoyable!  Cowley County will be hosting a Favorite Family Foods Show during 4-H Club Days.  Cloverbuds and 4-H members can display their favorite family meal menu with a proper table setting.

Participants will select one favorite food from the menu and display a photograph of that food.  4-Her's will meet with a Foodie (aka judge) to discuss their entry.  4-H members age 14 and older should be aware of nutrition facts for their Favorite Family Food.

Youth Livestock Update Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a new, national, multi-species youth livestock quality assurance program that focuses on food safety, animal well-being, and character development, through age-appropriate educational curriculum for youth 8-21 years of age. This program is an annual certification that grows with a young person, so the learning modules are different every year. The second year of curriculum materials were launched in October 2018, and youth are welcome to begin completing the training at any time.  ALL exhibitors are required to be YQCA certified in order to participate in the 2019 Kansas State Fair Grand Drive and/or Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS). This includes youth who will be showing market animals and breeding females. The YQCA certification covers a variety of species, so youth only need to complete one certification session to fulfill the requirement. Since the program is designed to be a national standard for youth ages 8 and older, 7-year-olds who will be participating in KJLS are exempt from completing this requirement. However, they are encouraged to attend an instructor-led class for the educational value.

Youth may obtain their YQCA certification using one of the following methods:  Instructor-led Training - $3/child  Online Course - $12/child  Test-Out Option – only 12 & 15 year olds eligible; online only; cost varies

Families must create a user account and pre-register all youth through the YQCA website (www.yqca.org) in order for them to participate in the program and receive a certification number. The program is integrated with 4HOnline, so families need to use their 4HOnline credentials to access the site. They should also register each child for certification by selecting their name from the drop-down menu (currently enrolled 4-H members identified as members of the family should appear as options). This will allow all currently enrolled members who have completed their YQCA training to show up on the LearnGrow report available to local 4HOnline managers. A resource that will guide families through logging onto the YQCA site to register for the course may be found on the K-State Youth Livestock website, under Youth Livestock Quality Assurance.

Families must pay for the instructor-led and online class through the site at the time of registration. It will require a credit card number or coupon code.

Upcoming YQCA Sessions January 30th; 5:30-7:00pm Extension Meeting Room February 15th; 10:00 a.m. Extension Meeting Room March 15th; 10:00 a.m. Extension Meeting Room
