What you need:

Scraps of fabric, or other fabrics of your choice (I used a matching fabric line)

Fusible webbing (I use Steam-a-Seam lite)

Matching thread for applique

Gingerbread Village

Cutting Instructions:

This pattern is perfect for using up your fabric scraps!

For this block you will need to cut:

Eight 2 1/4” (two and a quarter inch) squares

Two 4” squares

This is the basic layout of the block:

Although I used only two types of fabric for the smaller squares, you can go completely

scrappy and have them all a different fabric.

Sewing Instructions:

1. Sew the smaller 2 1/4” squares together to make two four patches like this:

2. Sew all four pieces together to make the whole block:

Trace the Christmas tree onto fusible webbing, and then iron on the back of your chosen

applique fabric:

4. Cut out the Christmas tree and place it on the top left square of your block:

When you are happy with the position, iron it in place.

(See TIP on next page)

TIP:

To help try to center the applique on the square, remember that you will lose 1/4” on the left

and top edges. I like to place two rulers where the seams will be so that it is easier to center:

I just eyeball it, it doesn’t have to be perfect! But having the rulers there at the 1/4” lines

helps me to see the size of the finished block.

5. Using matching thread, applique the Christmas tree to the block. I used a blanket stitch on

my machine, but you could also do it by hand.

NOTE: if you want to needleturn the applique, you will need to ADD a seam allowance. The

pattern is meant to be done with a raw edge.

Finished applique done by machine:

Block 9 is now finished!

I have not gone into great details with these instructions on the assumption of a basic

knowledge of patchwork :) If you need help with any of these steps, however, please feel free

to email me at [email protected] and I will try my best to help!

Gingerbread Man Applique:

Please note that this applique piece is designed for raw edge applique using a blanket stitch by

hand or machine. If you want to use the needleturn technique, please add a seam allowance
