The school is buzzing and we have settled into our new environments. It is important that we communicate with each other, share information and keep building relationships, which helps to hold and guide the students. For this to work at best we have to make sure that we acknowledge, understand and respect each other and the spaces we enter including the various boundaries. To support the students and teachers in their learning and teaching environment I would like to remind us of a few basic ground rules: Please make sure that your child eats a good breakfast, which sustains him/her through to the morning tea break at 10.50am Make sure your child has a packed lunch, drinking bottle, hat etc. for the day Please arrive in time to avoid rushing and give time to put bags, hats, etc. into place Farewell your child and leave him/her entrusted into the staff’s hands; it is important that we leave the classrooms and verandas free so that the children can get ready to ‘line up’ It is important that we respect the time ‘to get ready to go to class’ and allow the space to settle in; for this we need to withhold from trying to engage in conversations with teachers and/or assistants as they all need to give their full attention to the class; if you should have an important and urgent message for the teacher please leave a note or write it in the communication book to not interrupt the process of getting ready You can also always leave a message at the reception which will be passed on in due time If you want to have conversations with other parents please do this away from the learning spaces, remembering that classes also use the outside spaces during the day Please arrange a meeting time with your child’s teacher if you wish to have a conversation The supervision before school starts at 8.30am. Please make sure that you do not drop your child/ren off before that time as the duty of care is not provided by the school. If you need to drop your children off earlier, please arrange this through the office reception. In the afternoons school finishes at 3.00pm and the school does not provide supervision of students; so please make sure your children are not playing unsupervised on the school grounds. It is important that we follow all of the above to support the daily smooth running of the school as best as we can. Thank you very much for your support. Principal’s Report REMINDERS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENTS Dear Parents and Carers, We are certainly well established into the term with our new routines and rhythms! The school is buzzing and we have settled into our new environments. It is important that we communicate with each other, share information and keep building relationships, which helps to hold and guide the students. For this to work at best we have to make sure that we acknowledge, understand and respect each other and the spaces we enter including the various boundaries. To support the students and teachers in their learning and teaching environment I would like to remind us of a few basic ground rules:

Please make sure that your child eats a good breakfast, which sustains him/her through to the morning tea break at 10.50am

Make sure your child has a packed lunch, drinking bottle, hat etc. for the day Please arrive in time to avoid rushing and give time to put bags, hats, etc. into

place Farewell your child and leave him/her entrusted into the staff’s hands; it is

important that we leave the classrooms and verandas free so that the children can get ready to ‘line up’

It is important that we respect the time ‘to get ready to go to class’ and allow the space to settle in; for this we need to withhold from trying to engage in conversations with teachers and/or assistants as they all need to give their full attention to the class; if you should have an important and urgent message for the teacher please leave a note or write it in the communication book to not interrupt the process of getting ready

You can also always leave a message at the reception which will be passed on in due time

If you want to have conversations with other parents please do this away from the learning spaces, remembering that classes also use the outside spaces during the day

Please arrange a meeting time with your child’s teacher if you wish to have a conversation

The supervision before school starts at 8.30am.

NATIONAL RIDE 2 SCHOOL DAY - FRIDAY 22 MARCH 2019

Later this month the students, staff and parents of Proston State School P-10 are joining more than 3000 schools around the country in encouraging their students to start the day in a more active way. Cycling to school is a great way to start the day. It’s better for your health, and by reducing the amount of vehicle travel, it’s better for the planet. Ride2School is; “A nationwide program that enables students to get physically active on their journey to school” The problem - Over the past 40 years the number of children who are physically active everyday has significantly dropped. In the 1970s, eight out of ten students rode or walked to school but today that number has dropped to just two out of ten. The solution - Students who ride or walk to school contribute to their minimum physical activity level of 60 minutes per day. They are also more focused and ready to learn compared to those who are driven in a motor vehicle. We ask you “to keep an eye out for extra cyclists on the roads, give them a friendly wave of encouragement and give yourself some extra time to get to your destination.”

Iron and Clay Performance

Thursday 28th March from 2.00-3.00 pm, Proston School will welcome some exciting visitors to perform for us. The professional touring band Iron & Clay will be returning by popular demand for the third year in a row! For nine months of the year, these young adults travel around Australia, bringing a positive message via their music and singing. They are positive role models to our students, inspiring and motivating all who they come in contact with. We can look forward to another inspiring performance by this very talented group, Iron & Clay. Chappy Janelle

Rewards Day Rewards Day will be held on Friday 5th April from 9- 11am. Rewards Day this term is based here at the school. Students will be participating in Proston Survivor Games - a series of obstacles and tasks set to challenge our students whilst promoting fun, teamwork and cooperation.

Lunch will be provided at 11:00am - Pizza and an ice block. Students will then return to their classrooms for either craft or movies once they have tidied their learning space.

Students will wear school uniform and will need a spare change of clothes as some of these activities can get messy (these clothes can be free dress).

Students need to meet the criteria of 100 Proudies to attend. Please ensure your child has their hat, water and food for 2nd Break.

Prep Noticeboard Check out the Prep Bulletin Board in one of the Proston shop windows. They have certainly learnt a lot this term already! Thank you Mary and Bob for letting us showcase our school in your window.

P & C Update The AGM was held Wednesday 20 March. A huge thank you goes to our outgoing members for all of your efforts over the past 12 months. The school and students certainly appreciate it. The new executive committee is as follows: President: Laine Robertson Vice President: Felicity Blanch Treasurer: Lynette Dabonde Secretary: Donna Howard Thank you to all the parents who made an effort to attend!

Prep News In Prep we have been very busy in Maths learning to classify objects into different groups. We are also learning how to count and add objects together. We made creatures using playdough and then counted how many eyes, ears and hats.

The Balanced Reader: Setting Goals and Targets Teachers have been working on setting reading goals and targets with the students this week! Each learner has a goal that they are working towards to improve their ability to read and comprehend texts. Students know their goals and the strategies they will use to reach them and teachers have been providing feedback and celebrating the success of each student as they achieve what they set out to do. Ask your child what they are working towards at school tonight and have a chat with the classroom teacher as to how you can help your child to improve their reading.

Recently we said goodbye to our much loved Mrs Heit. The passing of our Sue has left a very big gap in the heart and soul of Proston State School P-10 that will never be filled. It’s actually very difficult for us to put into words everything she means to Proston State School P-10 students, staff and the greater school community. Sue dedicated over 20 years of her life to the students and staff of our beautiful little school. Sue loved our school and cared about every single student that set foot into the school grounds. Sue was the absolute backbone of our school. She was the fabric that was woven to keep us all together. Sue was our constant through every leadership change and educational change. She was ever the optimist and was a consummate professional. No school event in the last 20 years has happened without Sue’s special touch. She worked tirelessly behind the scenes and gave up her weekends and worked into the night to ensure that every event was going to run smoothly and they always did. We will miss Sue’s nurturing and loving nature. She never had a mean word to say about anyone. Sue would always take the new teachers under her wing and always ensured that they were settling in well. She would check in with them to make sure they were not overwhelmed or feeling too lost. For many of the younger teachers Sue was their Proston mum. She was always someone we could turn to when we were down. She would listen when we felt lost. She would help with anything if we needed it. Sue was always just there for us. Sue was also one of the kindest people you could ever come across. Sue was also extremely compassionate towards the kids, especially those from families who were down on their luck. Sue would often spend her own time and money ensuring some students had food in their bellies, clothes on their backs and shoes on their feet. Mrs Heit touched all of our lives in different ways and all of our lives have been far richer because she has been a part of them. The Proston School community loved Sue and she will never be forgotten. Her legacy at Proston School will always live on!

Prep-2 Cooking Elective During our Friday Electives, the Prep-2 Cooking group made fruit kebabs. They had a lot of fun.

Wellbeing – Home Brain Patterning Extending students’ learning beyond the classroom builds their independence, brain pathways and growth mindsets to explore and learn, and one of these learning environments is at home. An area predominantly used for study is highly desirable. Over time their brains will build patterns that associate that place with study, thus creating habits and reducing barriers to getting started. Also, plenty of colour in this area stimulates students’ brains. Many families find space a problem and a special study area very difficult to provide. In these cases, the best scenario is to create as many of the features for an efficient learning/ study area as possible, including being well lit, quiet, warm and comfortable, a copy of their Personal Timetable and a Forward Planner on the wall. It also needs to be well resourced with stationery and a computer, away from distractions, especially TV and loud music. Mobiles should be on flight mode. Quiet rhythmic music can actually enhance learning. Studying in front of the TV is a total waste of time, because their brains’ attention cannot compete with the brightness, noise and movement on the screen. Studying in bed is ineffective, because the brain relates bed to sleep, not study.

Show Team Raffle The Proston Show Team will be running a raffle at the Golden Spurs Campdraft this weekend to raise funds for their Ekka trip. There are several prize packs to win, for just $1 a ticket. Please come along to the campdraft and support our team.
