Regional Overview
This report delivers quarterly labor market information to NOVA faculty, staff, students, employers, and community partners to highlight regional employment trends. To ensure that northern Virginia businesses remain globally competitive and continue to create jobs, NOVA provides access
to highly skilled, credentialed, and diverse talent and defined career pathways for the region. NOVA’s Office of Workforce and Economic Development collaborates with employers, economic development organizations, education institutions, community-based organizations, and local governments in the northern Virginia region to address the skills gap and develop a robust talent pipeline.
The second quarter of 2019 continued an upward growth trend for job postings, which were up approximately 12% across the region over the same time-period in 2018. Notably, employer job postings increased the most in Loudoun and Prince William between Q1 and Q2 of 2019, and positions in the
health care profession increased more than 15% from the same quarter last year. The job postings growth rate in Q2 of 2019 in the northern Virginia region of 12.1% outpaced the national job postings rate of 9.4% for the same time-period. The unemployment rate for the region remains steadily low at 2.4% as of May 2019, and the average wage for the region increased approximately 1.6% over last year. The region remains the number one location for employers advertising positions in cybersecurity, with more than 7.0% of all cybersecurity job postings nationwide coming from northern Virginia; however, the number of cybersecurity postings in the region decreased 1.7% from the same time period last year. At 46%, the Fairfax/Falls Church area had the highest percentage of job postings for STEM-related occupations in the region.

The top 25 companies advertised a combined 20,643 job postings during the quarter, comprising 19.9% of all job postings regionally. General Dynamics remained the top employer by number of job postings from Q1 of 2019. Amazon, which announced in November 2018 their intention to locate
a second corporate headquarters in Arlington County, jumped 4 spots from last quarter, moving from number 10 to number 6, with 925 job postings. Nearly all of the top 25 employers advertising open positions are in the government contracting and technology sectors, with a few exceptions in health care, retail, and hospitality. The top hiring industry continues to be professional, scientific, and technical services, which advertised 18,470 job postings last quarter and currently employs approximately 275,000 workers, or 21%, of the regional workforce.

The unemployment rate continues to hover around 2.5%, creating a tight labor market for employers looking for talent. This list highlights the top 25 occupations advertised by employers in the second quarter of 2019, categorized by their 8-digit O*NET title. The O*NET classification system is made up
of 974 unique occupations; these 25 occupations listed above accounted for 46,702 job postings, or 45% of all employer demand. Software developers continue to be the most in-demand occupation, with 7,662 postings in Quarter 2; there are an estimated 22,000 software developers employed in northern Virginia, meaning the posting demand of 7,662 per quarter far exceeds the rate of postings for other occupations when compared with the number of people employed in the occupation. The average salary of all advertised jobs was $68,028, slightly lower than the average salary of $68,772 for jobs advertised during Quarter 1 of 2019. Average wages for northern Virginia employees increased 1.7% between the first quarters of 2018 and 2019.
