Dear Athletes and Parents, Welcome to the Anoka High School Track & Field Program! The coaching staff feels this may be one of the most influential and positive times in your life. We are looking forward to an enjoyable, fun, and successful year. We have assembled an Athlete's Manual and Team Rules so that you will have a clear understanding of the expectations the coaches have for you as an athlete and a parent. We have published this set of rules, expectations, and policies that will apply to ALL Anoka Track & Field Team members. It is the responsibility of the coaches to establish, enforce, and apply all team rules to all athletes. If you have any questions about the team rules feel free to contact a coach to discuss your questions. Disagreements over team rules and policies should be discussed with the coaches in a one-on-one discussion. Complaining about and showing disrespect for team rules and policies during practice, or in group situations will not be tolerated. The pages that follow in this packet contain the Athlete's Manual and Team Rules. We ask that both the athlete and his/her parent(s) read over the entire manual together. It is the responsibility of the athlete and parent(s) to read the rules and guidelines stated in this manual prior to the season. The Athlete's Manual is a guideline to help achieve our goals for the season. Remember that your attitude, desire, commitment, and teamwork are going to make a difference this year. By following the rules and guidelines set forth in this manual this season can be enjoyable and successful for everyone! Sincerely, Brittney Kurtz & Lucas Reidenbach Co-Ed Head Coaches

 GENERAL CONDUCT

Student athletes in the Anoka Track & Field Program must keep in mind that they are always in the public’s eye. Their personal conduct on and off the field is always subject to scrutiny of fellow teammates, fellow students, teachers, administrators, parents/guardians, fans, opponents, and the media. Student athletes have a responsibility to serve as positive role models and representatives of the Anoka Hennepin School District. In order to succeed in that role a student athlete should: -Show respect for authority, property, and peers at all times -Maintain academic eligibility throughout the season per MSHSL rules -Follow ALL team and MSHSL rules -Practice the ideals of sportsmanship, team loyalty, and fair play

WINNING ATTITUDE

Striving to be your best is an important key to succeeding in all aspects of your life. Winning is an admirable goal. However, experience has shown that true victory rarely comes if the ideals mentioned above are not the top priority. Winning without having the proper perspective is a hollow victory at best. The habits needed to be successful in track and field will only help you in other facets of your life.

THE PYRAMID OF SUCCESS

Table of Contents 12

 ATTENDANCE

Attendance will be taken at every practice and meet. Your attendance is directly related to the varsity awards. The times listed for practice are the starting times. If you are not dressed and prepared to practice, you are tardy. Tardies will be marked on the attendance sheet. Any schedule changes will appear in the locker rooms. The athlete must communicate with the coach BEFORE 2:20 if they are going to be tardy for practice due to academic reasons. Athletes must also notify the head coaches of any early dismissals. Early dismissals must be pre-arranged. All early dismissals require an excuse from the parent that includes: -The date and time of the practice -The reason you will be absent -Signature of the parent, doctor, or responsible adult If you are absent from school you are not permitted to practice unless for medical reasons which means you must have a medical note to practice. Also, if you are suspended from school you are not permitted to participate until the suspension is fulfilled and you return to school. If you are sent to MLC, you cannot practice that day. It is expected that students are also in school the day before and especially the day after a competition. Attendance will be kept for ALL practices and meets. All absences and tardies will be kept on file. Tardies result from not being dressed and prepared to practice at the starting time. Three tardies will constitute one practice absence. An excessive amount of absences may result in ineligibility to compete in meets and/or dismissal from the team, at the coach's discretion. First unexcused absence the athlete meets with the coach. Second unexcused absence the athlete and parent meets with the coach. Third unexcused absence the athlete is dismissed from the team. Staying for the entire track meet to support all the members of the track team is beneficial to all athletes. One of the important attributes we are attempting to teach is the importance of commitment. Athletes must not only attend meets to compete, but also to support their teammates. Therefore, there will be a sign out sheet at the meet for parents to bring athletes home if needed. However, the expectation is that athletes will ride with the team back to the high school. Athletes can only go home with their parents unless there is signed note by the parent allowing the athlete to ride with another teammate’s parents. Everybody who is part of the Anoka Track and Field Team needs to understand the importance of commitment and dedication not only for yourself but also your teammates. We greatly appreciate your support for the continued pride in Anoka Track and Field! *It is not the intent of the coaching staff to make athletes miss necessary appointments. But, we must make sure all athletes are held accountable and to the same standard. Track and Field is a varsity sport in which the student will represent her or his family, school, and community. We as a coaching staff believe good attendance is vital.

Table of Contents 13

 BEHAVIOR

Any inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. All athletes must be accepting and courteous toward all coaches, parents, and peers. THERE IS NO HAZING PERMITTED ON THIS TEAM! It is the responsibility of the athletes on the team to inform the coaches of any hazing or inappropriate behavior. Nobody can ignore such behavior! Athletes can be suspended from the team for inappropriate behavior. Length of the suspension will be the coach's discretion. *Each incident will be handled on an individual basis and won’t be subject to public discussion.* Captain Expectations Our captains are held to a high level of expectations. These include abiding by all team and MSHSL rules, demonstrating leadership and integrity on and off the track/field, attending all meets and riding with the team to and from the meet, and maintain good academic standing.

ELIGIBILITY

Anoka athletics follow the eligibility guidelines established by the MSHSL. Academics are very important and all athletes need to do their absolute best in the classroom. As a coaching staff, we will support your son or daughter in academics and will hold them accountable. Failing as a student will not be tolerated. Student-athletes were given additional eligibility information when they signed the 2018-2019 MSHSL Extracurricular Eligibility Information packet. Reminder: Ineligible students may practice but may not dress for an athletic event or travel with

the team to an away athletic contest. Students who are suspended from school may not practice, dress or travel with the team.

EVENT SELECTION AND PARTICIPATION

All students are encouraged to participate in track and field. Track and field is a great school sport because students have so many opportunities to compete. The coaching staff has developed a schedule that will allow students ample competitive situations. The coaching staff has the final authority concerning meet participation and event selection. If you are not sure why you are in a certain event, athletes should ask the coach. Relay and post season selections are made by the coaching staff. The following criteria are used for event placement: -Attendance and practice performance -Skill -Attitude -Sportsmanship

 PRACTICE SCHEDULE AND TIMES

We practice Monday-Friday throughout the season. Practice is always scheduled from 2:40-5:00 PM (check with events coach) unless the weather is inclement; if necessary, indoor practice is scheduled (check with your events coach). The activity bus leaves every Monday-Thursday at 5:30. Early buses are available on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30. *There are no activity buses on Friday. *It is advised that varsity athletes do not get scheduled to work until 5:00 at the EARLIEST Practice is essential to success as an athlete. We only want dedicated athletes who work hard in practice. Without quality practice there will be no success at the meets. Athletes should only dress in appropriate athletic gear for practice.

TRAVEL Anoka Hennepin School District will provide transportation to all athletes for away meets. Important guidelines are as follows:

● The coaching staff and the bus driver will monitor behavior on the bus. No inappropriate behavior will be tolerated on the bus at any time.

● Athletes must be on the bus before our scheduled departure time. We do not wait. ● All procedures established for food and drink on the bus must be followed. ● Athletes will clean up their area at the conclusion of all meets and practices. ● All athletes will return with the team unless they are leaving with a parent. Athletes

may only leave with their parent or guardian (signed note). This should not be challenged the day of the meet.

EQUIPMENT

All athletes will be issued a uniform top. For sanitary reasons we are requiring athletes to purchase uniform shorts from the online store that they will keep. We are also requiring athletes to purchase a long sleeve warm-up from the online store. If you require financial assistance please contact the activities office. Athletes should purchase their own shoes for training and if they desire, spikes for competition. There are event-specific spikes, please ask your sales clerk or a coach if you have any questions. Our program will provide 1/8” pyramid spikes to the athletes. Additional track & field clothing will be available to be purchased at the beginning of the season.
