MAIDENPHILOSOPHYNoonethingmakesateamachampion.Insteaditisthesumofmanythingsbroughttogetherthatmakeoneteammoresuccessfulthananother.Someareobvious:hardwork,discipline,dedication,teamwork,andbasicfundamentals,whichwecannotstresstheseenough.Somethougharenotasobvious:enthusiasm,ability,confidence,teamchemistry,andyoungplayersgrowingintotheirrolesontheteam.Somecomponentsareintangiblebutnolessreal,suchastradition,spirit,andthewilltowin.What,weascoaches,aretryingtobringtogetherisalltheseaspectseverygameconsistently.Wealwaysstresswithourathletesperformanceratherthanjustwinning.Allweeveraskisfortheathletestogive100%everytimetheystepontothefield.Throughthisobjectiveifthingsworkoutforavictorythenwecancelebrate,howeveriftheydon’tperformancebecomestheingredienttosuccess.Therearetwokindsofmistakesyoucanmakeinagame,onesthatareoutofyour

controlandonesthatareinyourcontrol.Theonesthatareoutofyourcontrol–don’tworryabout,itcan’tbechangedsodon’tletitruintherestofyourgame.Theonesinyourcontrol–suchasmentalmistakesaretheonesthatmakethedifferenceinaballgame.Forexample,missingasignalornotknowingthesigns,notknowingwhattodowiththeballwhenitishittoyou,notknowingthecountorhowmanyouts;thosemistakescanbeandmustbeavoidedtobesuccessful.Wewantourplayerstobeproudoftheirperformancenomattertheoutcomeofthegame.Ifyougive100%thenyoushouldbeproudofyourperformance.OnethingIhavealwaysbelievedisthatyouneverstaythesame.Youareeithergettingbetteratwhatyoudoorgettingworse,butyouneverstaythesame.Thisiswhythebasicfundamentalsofsoftballaresoimportant,theharderyoupracticethebetteryouget.Thebetterteamsyouplaythebetteryou’llplay.Thisformeisakeytobeingsuccessfulatwhatyoudo.

TEAMGOALSEachyear,specificteamobjectiveswillchangeastheteam’scharacterchanges.However,thefollowingshouldbethegeneralgoalsoftheSeminoleMaidensSoftballteamandcoachingstaff.• Toparticipateinpracticeandgameswithdesireandintensity;

• Tohelpeachotherbecomeasphysicallyskilledaspossible;

• Toimproveteamstatisticsfromlastseason;

• Tomatureasyoungwomen,byrealizingthatlearningtodealwithadversityissometimesthebestwaytogrow;

• Toopenlydiscussteamandpersonalconcernswhentheyarise,inordertoresolveconflictsbeforetheybecomeproblems;

• TodedicateyourselftoimprovingtheSeminoleMaidenssoftballprogramtomakeitasuccess.

PlayHard!AsacoachIshouldneverhavetotellyouthis.Whatisplayinghard?Itisgiving100%ofwhatyouhaveeverypitch.Itisbeingfocusedandwantingthatbattertohityoutheball.Itisplayingpastthatpointofexhaustionandnoteventhinkingaboutquitting.Itissimplyleavingeverybitofyouonthatfieldwhenthegameisover,knowingthatyoucouldnothavegivenoneouncemore.Thatiswhatplayinghardmeans.Thatiswhatsportsareallabout.Ifaplayerisonthefieldanddoesnotplayhardorgiveherall,someoneelseeagerforthemomentwillgivewhatittakestobe“outthere”andwillpassherby.Inotonlyaskthisaboutmystartingnineeachgame,butoutofeveryone.Youneverknowwhenasmartpinchrunnerisgoingtoscorethewinningrunora

pinchhitterwillgetagamewinninghit.Everyonehasgottobepreparedtogive100%whentheopportunityknocks.

PlayingSmart!Playingsmartwillmakethedifferencebetweenwinningandlosing.Iwantyoutoalwaysthinkahead.Whenyouronthatfield,beforeeverypitchIwantyoutosaytoyourselfwhereyou’llgoifthatballishittoyouonthegroundandwhereyou’llgoifitshitintheair.Thatistheonlywaytoalwaysknowwhattodo.Youmustknowwhattodoinanygivensituation.Itisassimpleashittersnotswingingatbadpitchesanddrawingawalk,takingahitbypitchorevenfakingathrow.Toplaysmartwemustbeabletocommunicateandinthegameofsoftballthatmeansunderstandingsignsandknowingwhattodo.Ifyoucommunicate,thinkaheadandtrustyourinstincts,thenyouareplayingsmartandwillcomeoutahead.Thesportofsoftballisverymentalandstrategic.
