Bart’s work focuses on gaining an empirical understanding of pathways to involvement in terrorism, the pre-attack behav-iours of lone-actor terrorists, outlining pitfalls and progress within the field of terrorism studies and critically assessing the utility of key concepts such as radicalisation. His latest publica-tion is ‘Research on Terrorism, 2007-2016: A Review of Data, Methods, and Authorship’ in Terrorism and Political Violence.

Paul’s work focuses on terrorist behaviour with a particular interest in lone-actor terrorism and radicalisation processes. He leads the UCL team within the VOX-PolNetwork of Excellence and is currently the Principal Investiga-toron a European Research Council-funded project calledGRIEVANCE. In addition, he assists and liaises with the crimeprevention practitioner community and law enforcement.

John is an associate editor of Perspectives on Terrorism and Behavioral Sciences of Terrorism and Political Aggression. He is also the host and developer of the Talking Terror podcast. On the podcast, he interviews leading experts in terrorism and counter-terrorism studies. His research interests include organisational splits in terrorist groups, the role of trust in terrorist involvement, violent dissident Irish republicanism, the psychology of terrorism, expert-novice differences in terrorist offenders, and the social ecology of radicalisation.

Director of the Center for the Analysis of Terrorism and Euro-pean Security (CATES) at the European Law and Governance School, Andreas is also the co-director of the Olympia Summer Academy and scientific coordinator of the ‘Counter Terrorism and Trans national Security Governance’ executive training seminar, offered by the European University Institute’s (EUI) School of Transnational Governance.

Felipe was a post-doc researcher at the AutonomousUniversity of Lisbon, working on Euro-Mediterraneansecurity. Felipe is also an analyst for internationalsecurity at RTP, the public service broadcasting organisation. He was a visiting fellow at the Oxford University and at the Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. He is also a visiting professor at the General Staff Course and at the Joint Promotion Course General Officer at the Por-tuguese Institute of Higher Military Studies.

Dr Jörn Hauschild studied law at the universities of Kiel and Freiburg. In 1999 he started as a public prosecutor in Bremen. From 2003 to 2006 he was seconded to the Attorney General in Karlsruhe. He then returned to the Bremen Public Prosecu-tor’s Office, where he served as spokesperson and head of the Organised Crime, Corruption and Money Laundering Depart-ment.

Elizabeth specialises in gender, extremism and how to counterextremism. She studied for her PhD in War Studies at King’sCollege London, where she explored gender in both ‘Islamist’and ‘far-right’ movements in the UK. She is also an AssociateFellow at the London-based think tank RUSI and has carriedout research examining attitudes to both Violent Extremismand Countering Violent Extremism in the UK, France, Germany,the Netherlands and Canada. Before academia, Elizabeth spentmore than fifteen years with BBC radio.

Moign Khawaja has an MA Journalism degree from the Univer-sity of Lincoln. After graduating from the university in 2008,he worked as a journalist for several media outlets includingBBC Radio Lincolnshire, Foreign Policy Journal, InternationalHerald Tribune and Times of Oman.

Donald is an associate fellow at the International Centre for Counter Terrorism in The Hague. He is also director of Veri-table Analytics, a research consultancy providing analysis for practi tioners and policymakers. He was previously a lecturer at the Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Religion at Lancaster University and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, University of St Andrews. He has published widely on topics relating to be-liefs, ideas, and media in the context of terrorism and political violence, terrorist use of the internet and the terrorist infor-mation environment.

Peter is an Arabic-speaking independent consultant who has been investigating the exploitation of the internet by jihad ist groups and their supporters for well over a decade. In 2004, he pioneered the systematic research and analysis of online jihadist media for the British government and went on to lead a dedicated team of experts in the field at the BBC.

Joas specialises in Islamism, especially Islamist ideology in the Middle East. His research concentrates mostly on Salafism in its various forms, but also on other manifestations of mod-ern Islamic and Islamist ideology, particularly with regard to politics and theology. He is currently working on a book on the intellectual history of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan.

Florence is in charge of coordinating research activities at the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) . She works on strategic foresight, as well as security and conflict in the Middle East and North Africa. Previously employed at NATO Defence College and the German parliament, she wrote her PhD on the Lebanese army at the Humboldt University of Berlin and holds degrees from Sciences Po Paris, the Sorbonne and the University of Munich.

PIETER VAN OSTAEYENPhD candidate, University of Leuven

Pieter is currently researching the usage of social media in the ideological strife between al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. He studied medieval history with a specialisation in the history of the Crusades and Arabic and Islamic Studies, focusing on the history of Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi and the Assassins.Pieter has been analysing the conflict in Syria since the outset in 2011. In 2012 he began reporting on foreign fighters and extremist groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra, Ahrar as-Sham,Jund al-Aqsa and The Islamic State.

RENSKE VAN DER VEER Director, InternationalCentre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT)

Before her time at the ICCT, Renske was deputy head of unit at the Department of Counter Terrorism at the Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV). She has over ten years of experience in counter terrorism, having served in the intelligence community as an analyst on jihadist terrorism and with the Dutch national police. She is specialised in modus operandi of terrorist attacks, profiles and drivers of terrorists, and countermeasures among other topics.

NOÉMIE BOUHANAAssociate Professor, Security and Crime Science, University College London

Noémie leads the Counter Terrorism Research Group at the University College London. She directed the EU FP7 PRIME project, an international consortium of six European universi-ties conducting multidisciplinary research in the prevention, interdiction and mitigation of lone actor radicalisation and attack behaviour. At present, she is principal investigator of the The Social Ecology of Radicalisation project, funded by the US Department of Defense Minerva Initiative.

Lorenzo is an expert on Islamism in Europe and North America.His research over the past 15 years has focused on the mobili-sation dynamics of jihadist networks in the West, governmen-tal counter radicalisation policies and the activities of MuslimBrotherhood-inspired organisations in the West. He has heldpositions at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science andInternational Affairs, at the Kennedy School of Government,the US Institute of Peace, the RAND Corporation and theCenter for Security Studies (ETH Zurich). In 2016, he was ap-pointed by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi as Coordinatorof the National Commission on Jihadist Radicalisation.

Bennett studies violent extremist movements and organi-sations in the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Balkans, and supporters of extremist groups in the United States. He is the co-author of the Program on Extremism report ‘The Travelers: American Jihadists in Syria and Iraq’, the most comprehensive, publicly available accounting of American jihadist foreign fight-ers in the Syrian and Iraqi conflicts to date.

HIROYASU NAGATAResearcher, cyber security and digital forensics

Hiroyasu is a researcher on cyber-security and digital forensicsat a Japanese security company. He conducts open source in-telligence reporting in relation to terrorism as a personal activ-ity, covering 26 languages. He has acquired extensive expertise in this area during two decades of information gathering andanalysis.

ERIN SALTMAN Policy Lead for Counterterrorism and Dangerous Organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Facebook

Erin’s background and expertise include processes of radicalisa tion within a range of regional and socio-political contexts. Her research and publications have focused on the evolving nature of online extremism and terrorism, gender dynamics within violent extremist organisations and youth rad-icalisation. She also manages Facebook’s work with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT).

GARETH MOTTLecturer, Department of Politics and International Relations, Nottingham Trent University

Gareth teaches on several International Relations and Securi-ty Studies modules and leads the online Masters programme in International Relations. He has recently published in the Critical Studies on Terrorism and Studies in Conflict and Ter-rorism journals. His research interests include ‘cyber securi ty’, ‘software and governance’, and ‘Critical Terrorism Studies’.

Maura is the coordinator and principal investigator of the VOX-Pol Network of Excellence. She holds a PhD in political science from Trinity College, Dublin, which she was granted for a thesis on cyberterrorism and terrorist use of the internet.

LISA KAATI Senior researcher, Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI)

STUART MACDONALD Professor of Law, Swansea University

Lisa holds a PhD degree in computer science from UppsalaUniversity and she is currently working on a commissionfrom the Swedish government where she studies violent extremism in online environments. Her research interests includes techniques for analysing social media and studies of hate and violent extremism in online environments.

Stuart is Director of Swansea University’s Cyber Threats Re-search Centre (CyTReC) and Co-Director of the CHERISH Digital Economy Centre. He has held visiting scholarships at Columbia Law School, the University of Sydney, the Université Grenoble Alpes and the University of California Santa Barbara. In 2017 he was the holder of a Fulbright scholarship.
