Western Piedmont Community College’s graduation ceremony commences with the entrance of our Chief Marshal, the recipient of the previous years’ Excellence in Teaching Award, who is carrying the Academia Mace. The academia mace symbolizes the entrance of the colleges’ governing authority.

The tradition of the academia mace is derived from medieval times in England, in which it was held by a bodyguard for dignitaries at ceremonial functions. Today, the academia mace ushers in our President, Board of Trustees, Senior Administration, faculty and staff who lead our college to uphold our mission

and goals to our students and community.

Western Piedmont Foundation, Incorporated, a non-profit organization, was founded

to encourage and develop public and private support for Western Piedmont Community College beyond that provided by county, state and federal funds. Created

in 1967, this was among the first private, fund-raising organizations within the North Carolina Community College System.

Many needs exist which are not sufficiently provided for by public sources, and private contributions go a long way toward giving the College a margin of excellence above the average. Individuals or organizations wishing to assist the College may do so by

making tax-deductible donations of equipment, cash, bonds, stocks, real estate, trusts, life insurance or bequests. For more information, contact Ms. Stacey B. Sholar,

Western Piedmont Foundation Executive Director.

Western Piedmont Community College Alma Mater

In the shadow of the mountain, reaching toward the sun, Where the door stands always open, welcome every one.

Western Piedmont, alma mater, may you always be, A place of truth, a place of wisdom, soul of liberty.

We have found our goals, our future in your shining halls,

And as loyal sons and daughters, we are always one.

Western Piedmont, alma mater, may you always be, A place of truth, a place of wisdom, soul of liberty,

soul of liberty, soul of liberty.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The formal academic dress worn for today’s ceremony originated during the middle ages when a warm gown and hood were useful for scholars and clerics in unheated buildings. As time passed, this attire evolved into elaborate vestments that more closely resembled the colorful and symbolic functions of the royal courts. These vestments were often made of colored silks with heavy embroidery. Different styles of gowns, hoods and head coverings displayed the disciplines and levels of achievement of the wearer. Late in the 19th century, American colleges and universities stabilized the use of special attire for graduations and other academic ceremonies. A standardized style for gowns, hoods, and caps enables an audience to identify the scholar’s level of achievement, academic discipline, and institution that awarded the degree. Gowns are styled according to degrees. The gown for associate and bachelor’s degrees has simple, pointed sleeves and is closed. The master’s degree is indicated by an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the base hanging and square-cut. The gown may be worn open or closed. The doctor’s gown is the most elaborate, and is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet bars on each sleeve. Ordinarily, the velvet is black, but may be in a color pertaining to the wearer’s degree or field of study. Often the velvet is black with a cording in the color of the wearer’s field of study. Many institutions have specially-designed doctoral gowns that reflect institutional colors and patterns. The hood symbolizes the level of degree and the degree earned or field of study according to the hood’s length and width of the velvet border. The bachelor’s degree hood is the shortest and its velvet is two inches wide; the master’s hood velvet is three inches, and the doctor’s hood is the longest with velvet of five inches. For all hoods, the color of velvet represents the name of the degree or the field in which the degree was earned. Examples of velvet colors and fields of study are: white – arts, letters, humanities; dark blue – philosophy; light blue – education; golden yellow – science; pink – music; drab – business; apricot – nursing; copper – economics; sage green – physical education; brown – fine arts; purple – law; lemon – library science; citron – social work; green – medicine; scarlet – theology; crimson – journalism and communications. For all hoods, the colors in the satin lining represent the institution that awarded the degree. The traditional cap for all degrees is the mortarboard. Tassels may be black or in a color that corresponds to the code for degrees and fields of study. Gold is reserved for the doctor’s degree. Many who hold a doctor’s degree wear a soft velvet tam or similar headdress.
