Dr. Samim received her DMD fromShiraz University of Medical Science. She completed the Oral Medicine &Oral Pathology residency program atUBC and obtained her Master ofScience in craniofacial and pediatricdentistry. After holding the positionof an assistant professor at UBC anda staff of BC Cancer agency, she iscurrently an assistant professor atMcGill University and a staff ofpathology and laboratory medicine atthe Health Science Center of NL. Dr.Samim’s expertise lies in thediagnosis, nature and primarily non-surgical management of oral, maxillofacial, and temporomandibulardisorders.

McGill Continuing Dental Education offers two mini-residency options: oralmedicine/clinical oral pathology and temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. The mini-residency in general will be comprised of lectures about temporomandibularjoint disorders as well as clinical hands-on experience, that, based on your eligibility(licensed in Québec or not) will involve examining, diagnosing and treating patients withTMD and orofacial pain disorders or complete clinical oral pathology and oral medicinelectures and clinical hands-on/observations on the management of oral lesions andmedically complex cases.

Interest in TM disorders and oral lesions have gone through evolutionary andrevolutionary changes.  This course will provide training commensurate with standardsof care and evidence-based management of the patient that have been developing in theacademic communities around the world over the last decades. The McGill TMD/OralMedicine Mini-Residency Program is designed to offer a comprehensive experience forthe practicing dentist that will connect the medical and dental aspects of TMD or orallesions. At the completion of the program, the dentist should be able to diagnose andtreat patients who have a temporomandibular joint disorder and be able to recognizeother orofacial pain conditions or oral lesions and can be able to recognize and managethose conditions.

In the Oral Medicine Mini-Residency, the candidates will receive at least 25-30anonymous cases as well along with patient histories and clinical and/or radiographicimaging based on the topics covered on the course. The candidate is encouraged toreview these cases and develop their own differential diagnoses. We will review eachcase’s clinical presentation with thorough descriptions of the clinical and/or radiographicimages, and the candidate will be given time to ask questions and provide differentialdiagnoses. A formal differential diagnosis will then be provided for each case. Eachdisease on the formal differential diagnosis will be discussed with a view to its plausibilityas a diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

The mini-residencies will be conducted in both the McGill Faculty of Dentistry andMontreal General Hospital clinics. Hands-on work on patients will be possible for thoselicensed in Québec. Dentists not licensed in Québec will participate on a “observational’basis.

The duration of the mini-residency duration is flexible could be 2- 3 months and theobjectives could be tailored based on the duration of the residency. A 1-monthresidency could also be considered. Dentists will attend 4 days a week.

He maintains aclinical practice limited toperiodontics and implant surgery.

In modern therapy, the reconstruction of periodontal and peri-implant soft tissues isa key aspect of treatment for aesthetic and functional purposes.Over the years, several surgical techniques have been proposed for the treatment ofsingle and multiple recessions and peri-implant defects with different flap designs andconnective tissue grafts, achieving an excellent level of scientific evidence.More recently, research has focused on collagen matrices as connective tissue graftssubstitutes, in order to reduce post-operative discomfort and morbidity.

The aim of this course, then, is to analyze and provide participants, by mean ofliterature review, clinical cases, video supported procedures and practical exercises, the most effective techniques for the management of soft tissues defects inmucogingival and peri-implant surgery.

Agenda

Morning:● Gingival recessions and soft tissue defects around teeth: diagnosis and prognosis● Surgical techniques for soft tissue reconstruction around teeth● Surgical techniques for root coverage in single and multiple recession-type defects● The use of collagen matrices as connective tissue graft substitutes● Soft tissue defects at implant sites● Soft tissue reconstruction procedures around implants● Different timing for soft tissue management around implants● The role of collagen matrices for peri-implant soft tissue augmentation

Afternoon:Two hands-on exercises on pig jaws● Single and multiple recession defects treatment by means of a coronally advanced

flap and a volume stable collagen matrix (Geistlich Fibro Gide)● Soft tissue augmentation with volume stable collagen matrix (Geistlich Fibro Gide)

Ms Somerville began her career as amedical technologist in ClinicalMicrobiology at the McGill UniversityHealth Centre (MUHC) and later wenton to obtain a BSc in Cell and MolecularBiology (Concordia University) and aMaster’s degree in Anatomy and CellBiology from McGill University.

She resumed her career as a McGillresearcher focusing on the epidemiologyof respiratory diseases and onlaboratory biosafety and wasinstrumental in the commissioning ofthe biosafety level 3 containment facilityused for tuberculosis research at theMUHC.

In 2003 Ms. Somerville joined theInfection Prevention and Control (IPAC)department at the Royal VictoriaHospital where she held the dossiers fordiverse inpatient and outpatient clinics, units and services. She has been thecoordinator of McGill Faculty ofDentistry’s undergraduate and residencyinfection control program since 2009.

As dental licensing bodies require more stringent application of infection preventionpractices and patients are becoming increasingly aware of the risks of infectious diseasetransmission as well as safety issues inherent in receiving dental treatment, dentalpractices must be able to apply increasingly complex policies and practice guidelines inorder to promote a safe and professional treatment environment .

In order to accomplish this, dental practitioners need to develop an infection controlprogram that is specific to their practice and to ensure the on-going education andtraining of both themselves and their staff that is in line with guidelines for best practice.

The “Old”: these are the core concepts based on evidence-based best practices fromreliable sources that have been in existence since the institution of universal precautionsin the 1980s and are the building blocks of any dental infection prevention and controlprogram.

The “New” explores what is new with respect to these core concepts. This includes notonly new recommendations from dental regulatory bodies but also new expectations thatare being demonstrated by patients seeking dental treatment.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to assess their dental practiceswith respect to principles falling within key infection and prevention categories and todevelop a program tailor-made to their own setting. These categories include, but will notbe limited to:

● Patient risk assessment or, “I think there is a TB patient in my waiting room”● Work restriction or, “What to do when your assistant has the flu?”● Needle stick injury or, “The needle got away from me”.● Hand hygiene or, “The soap versus hand sanitizer debate”● Personal protective equipment or, “Are all gloves created equal?”● Handling and storage of single use items or, “Are my disposables contaminated?”● Air handling in the operatory or, “Do I need an air purifier?”● Operatory surfaces or, “Barrier protect or disinfect?”● Cleaning, sterilization and disinfection or, “Do I really need a type-B sterilizer?”● Dental waterlines and suction or, “Is it really necessary to treat my water?”

*This course is also available by Livestream. See our website for details.

Computer Aided Design – Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologyhas made significant improvement in modern dentistry. CAD/CAM applications indentistry that include fabrication of inlays, onlays, crowns, fixed partial dentures, andimplant abutments/prostheses. Recently, computer-aided technology is a newmethod commercially available for fabricating removable prostheses. This systemfacilitates impressions, interocclusal records, and tooth selection to be completed inone appointment. The dentures are then fabricated using CAD/CAM technology andplaced in the second appointment.

Seven commercial manufacturers in the United States are currently fabricatingremovable prostheses with computer-aided design and computer-aidedmanufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology for clinicians world-wide. Thesemanufacturers have definitive protocols and offer exclusive dental materials, techniques, and laboratory support. CAD/CAM technology allows the clinician todesign removable prostheses and create natural looking superstructures. TheCAD⁄CAM technique provides precise fit, reduces number of visits and the cost ofthe procedure, and eliminates dimensional inaccuracies due to conventionalprocessing techniques.

The aim of this workshop is to describe a simple technique for removable prosthesisprocedure using CAD/CAM technology and reviewing different systems thatavailable on the web.

Course Objectives

• Discuss latest trends in digital removable prosthodontics.• Identify current treatment options for edentulous patients.• Describe new standards for treatment of edentulism.• Review intraoral scanners and CAD/CAM technology in prosthodontics.

Using an active learning approach, Fundamentals of Periodontics will give participantsthe basic didactic and translational understanding necessary to manage cases ofinflammatory periodontal disease. In the morning session, current concepts andstandards of care for periodontal examination, charting, and radiographs will bepresented. This will be accompanied by an algorithm for how to properly diagnoseinflammatory periodontal disease, and how to treatment-plan initial periodontaltherapy. Armed with this knowledge, participants will form into groups of 3-4, andeach group will be given different case on their laptops or tablets. Each case will havea case history, charting, and radiographs. Groups will diagnose and treatment-planeach case up to the end of initial therapy. A short debrief will follow to discusseveryone’s answers to all the cases. A break for lunch will follow.

In the afternoon session, a short presentation will cover evaluation of initial therapy, the decision-making appointment which marks the end of the initial-therapy phase ofperiodontal treatment. Finally, the groups will return to their cases, but this time willhave an added piece of the puzzle – the evaluation of initial therapy results. Groupswill now then have to decide how to manage each case post-initial therapy. A finaldebrief will discuss everyone’s decisions, and place the exercise into context.

Course Objectives

● To learn the current standards of care for periodontal examination, charting andradiographs in order to gain adequate information regarding a case ofinflammatory periodontal disease

● To synthesize the information gained from the charting and radiographs into acoherent diagnosis

● To treatment-plan cases of inflammatory periodontal disease through to the endof initial therapy

● To evaluate the results of initial therapy, and to decide how cases need to bemanaged subsequently

Each participant is required to bring a laptop ortablet to this course

Presently in Canada there more people aged 65 and older than 15 and younger.Senior patients represent the largest consumer of OTC and prescriptionmedications. This means that most dental practices will have patients withincreasing medical complexity. This course will explore areas such as office designfor the elderly patient, geriatric pharmacology, blood “thinners” and dentalmanagement, treating the demented patient, and treating common oral conditionssuch as xerostomia and candidiasis.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be more comfortable in treat-ing senior patients and their complex medical status. Course objectives include butnot limited to:

● Surgery and the anticoagulated patient. What is a DOAC? Warfarin, lowmolecular heparin, or ASA, how does it affect my patients and my treat-ment plan?

● Xerostomia or salivary gland hypofunction. Why is my patient’s mouthdry? How can I help a patient with a dry mouth?

● Geriatric pharmacology - what is polypharmacy? How can these “safe”herbal supplements affect my patients?

● Prevention, prevention, prevention. How can my patients keep their den-tition and your restorations from decaying?

● Common conditions associated with aging such as Alzheimer’s disease andParkinson’s disease. What are possible dental connections?

● How can I attract senior patients and make my office a safe and geriatric-friendly environment?

Successful oral rehabilitation often requires hard and soft tissue regeneration for idealfunctional and esthetic outcomes. Implant dentistry has evolved and it is the standardof care for replacing single or multiple missing teeth. As a result understanding of themaintenance of bone and soft tissue after tooth extraction is essential. Today’sclinicians are achieving predictable results by grafting extraction sockets for ridgepreservation utilizing the latest membranes and bone graft material. Socket graftingfollowing tooth removal reduces bone loss, maintains ridge proportion, enhancesesthetic and post-operative outcomes and satisfies patient expectations.

This course will review practical application of atraumatic extraction, ridge graftingand ridge preservation. Clinical experience and scientific evidence will be presentedto support the materials and techniques demonstrated. This course will provide youwith the knowledge and skills to successfully incorporate new procedures into yourdaily practice with confidence and predictability. Following the presentation, a hands-on workshop will be provided where you will perform the surgical proceduresdiscussed on special models designed to simulate actual clinical conditions.
