2019 Summer School Preschool and Elementary Catalog

Mid-Pacific's summer program is open to the community and includes academic curricula for preschool to grade 12 and Recreational and Sports programs for ages 3 through adult. A coeducational, independent, and college-preparatory day school, Mid-Pacific's summer sessions offer educational opportunities to its students as well as students not regularly enrolled.

General Information On March 15, 2019 at 9:00a.m., registration will be open to the general public on a first come, first served basis. Unless they will be enrolling in our English Language Development (ELD) classes, all students must be able to speak and understand English.

ONLINE REGISTRATION Mid-Pacific students may register online on February 5. Online forms will be available on myPueo at mypueo.midpac.edu.

PAYMENT Registration will not be confirmed until payment is received. Payments may be turned in to the Summer School Office or mailed to: Mid-Pacific Institute, Attn: Summer School, 2445 Kaʻala Street, Honolulu, HI 96822. Please make checks payable to Mid-Pacific Institute. Payment by credit card can be made during the online registration process. A $25 fee will be charged for returned checks.

CONFIRMATION A confirmation of classes will be emailed after payment has been received. Classroom assignments will be posted on NetClassroom, myPueo, and on the Mid-Pacific website.

Mid-Pacific reserves the right to cancel or make changes to any class.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS All students must have proof of medical insurance, a physical examination taken within the past two years, immunization record, and evidence of tuberculosis clearance done in the United States or by a U.S.-certified physician.

All international, U.S. mainland, neighbor island, and homeschool students must submit the Mid-Pacific Student Health Record (or Form 14), current (within 12 months of school attendance) tuberculosis screening done in the United States or by a U.S.-certified physician, and have medical insurance. Students will not be allowed to attend classes until all health requirements are completed.

REFUND AND WITHDRAWAL POLICY The following refund schedule applies when students withdraw from a course. Refund is based on the date when the Summer School Office receives notice of cancellation from parents.

Refund of fees will be calculated on the following basis:

● 75% of amount paid will be refunded if notice of cancellation received by April 1, 2019.

● 50% of amount paid will be refunded if notice of cancellation received from April 2 to May 1, 2019.

SWIM CLASSES Refunds for swimming will be given only if cancellation is received by 1:00 p.m. on the Friday prior to the start of the session. A $25 service charge for each session will be assessed for withdrawal. In the event of a pool closure, a make-up class may be scheduled at the discretion of the Swim Director.

TENNIS CLASSES A $25 service charge for each session will be assessed for withdrawal. Please check with the Tennis Office at 808-973-5100 for their cancellation policy.

COURSE CHANGES A $25 service fee (per occurrence) may be charged for any changes initiated by a student or parent/guardian.

EMERGENCY PLAN In the event of an emergency, students will be held in safe areas until pick-up is deemed safe. Check our website midpac.edu for up-to-date information and/or listen to major radio stations or watch local TV news programs.

Campus Map and Traffic Routing Campus Speed Limit: 10 mph TRAFFIC ROUTING All vehicles must enter Bakken circular area from the left-hand side (as you face Bakken Auditorium) at all times.

Peak Traffic Hours: 6:00a.m. to 8:00a.m. 11:30a.m. to 1:00p.m.

During peak traffic hours:

● No vehicles will be allowed to exit from Kaʻala Street. ● Vehicles entering campus from Kaʻala Street must exit from one of three exits:

Armstrong Street, Parker Place, or Maile Way (right turn only from Mid-Pacific onto Maile Way, exits on University Avenue).

● No parking at Bakken circular area. Circling this area to pick up your child is permitted. If you arrive early and need to wait for your child, you may park your car at the gym parking lot.

During off-peak hours: Enter and exit via Kaʻala Street only.

Guidelines and Policies The Elementary School Summer Program offers five weeks of fun learning experiences to children entering preschool through grade 5. From a reading and writing workshop to video production to business inquiry to robotics, students will work collaboratively with their peers under the guidance of skilled teachers. The preschool program offers daily explorations in early literacy development through many hands-on activities such as story-making, drama, painting, and plays.

This year's program runs from June 10 to July 12. There will be no school on Tuesday, June 11, and Thursday, July 4, in observance of Kamehameha Day and Independence Day. The following is a summary of guidelines and policies. A more detailed Preschool & Elementary School Summer School Handbook will be sent to parents with the confirmation of classes. To ensure that your child enjoys quality learning experiences in a safe learning environment, please read through the handbook.

ABSENCES If your child is ill and must remain at home, call the school office at 808-441-3800 to report the absence. Please contact your child's teacher directly about any assignments.

DRESS CODE PRESCHOOL Boys and Girls: Dress comfortably in appropriate playwear. Wear covered shoes and socks. Please send in two complete changes of clothing in a plastic bag with all belongings clearly marked with your child's name.

ELEMENTARY Boys: Shorts with 5" inseams or longer (kindergarteners and first-graders are permitted to wear 2" inseams), jeans, long pants. Girls: Skirts, dresses, muumuus in short or long lengths, shorts (same inseam length as boys). Boys and Girls: Shirts or t-shirts should be solid-color, striped, plaid, or patterned. A shirt bearing any character or slogan which promotes violence or ignorance is unacceptable, as are surfing and skating shirts. Children must wear athletic or regular shoes and socks or flat sandals with solid rubber soles and back straps. DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PRESCHOOL Parents of preschool children and/or their authorized guardian must park in the designated area or around the turnaround area near Wilcox Building and walk to the preschool classroom to drop-off and pick-up their children. The morning drop-off is between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. Morning child care for preschoolers prior to this time is not available. The afternoon pick-up is at 2:30 p.m. (5:00 p.m. only if child is signed up for the afternoon camp). Please pick up your child on time. A late fee will be charged. ELEMENTARY Parents of children and/or authorized adults of children in Kindergarten through grade 5 must pick up and drop off their children in the turnaround area in front of Wilcox Building. Drop-off is between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. All children must be in their respective classrooms by the start time, or they will be considered tardy to school. Only kindergartners are accompanied to Wilcox Dining Hall by the student assistants. Their teachers will meet them at 7:55 a.m. to accompany them to the classrooms. All other children wait outside their classrooms on the lanai. Pick-up for kindergartners through fifth graders is at 12:00 p.m. (unless the child is signed up for afternoon camp/care). The children walk with their teachers to the turnaround area. If the children are signed up for afternoon camp/care, they will be escorted to the Wilcox Dining Hall for lunch. AUTHORIZED PICK-UPS Only persons whose names are on the authorized pick-up list on file in the office, or whose names have been called in or sent to the office by a parent, may pick up a student.

LATE PICK-UPS Any elementary-school child who is not picked up by 12:30 p.m. or preschool child who is not picked up by 2:30 p.m. will be placed in the Afternoon Camp/After School Care program, for which there is a fee. If an emergency arises, please call the school office (808-441-3800). Children in the After School Care program must be picked up by 5:00 p.m. A late fee of $15 for every 15 minutes (or portion of) thereafter will be charged.

CLOSED CAMPUS Students are required to remain on campus from the time of their arrival before school until after school departure. Parents should submit a note to the school office and the child's teacher if their child will be picked up sometime during the school day for any reason. Children are not permitted to walk themselves to the middle or high school areas of the

campus after dismissal. Children participating in tennis will be escorted to the tennis courts. See Afternoon Camp and After School Care descriptions regarding escort to the swimming pool. Students who leave the campus after school may not return without written authorization.

GAMES, TOYS, ELECTRONIC ITEMS AND CELL PHONES Mid-Pacific reserves the right to ban any toy, game, or electronic item considered disruptive. Banned items include but are not limited to all electronic items (including iPods and cell phones), cards (including Pokemon and magic), and erasers that come in shapes such as foods, toys or cards. Please keep these items at home or they will be confiscated. Students may not use cellular phones or mobile devices during school hours. There is no reason for any elementary student to bring them to school. Any emergency situation, such as illness or injury, will be handled through the school office.

SNACKS/LUNCH All children should bring a healthy snack (juice, fruit, crackers) for the recess period. Candy, gum, and soda are not allowed. Occasional snacks of chips or cookies are allowed. Parents may pre-order lunch for their children through Mid-Pacific's food service provider, Sodexo. Lunch is offered for the entire five-week program only. If parents are fixing home lunch, prepare healthy nutritional selections: again, no candy or soda. There is no microwave available to heat children's lunches, so please do not send your child to school with food that needs to be heated.

NO PEANUTS POLICY There is a potential for severe allergic reactions to peanuts (and macadamia nuts), therefore, no foods containing any form of these nuts are served by the school or by Sodexo. Parents are also asked not to bring in food items that contain nuts to school for a classroom event.

SUPERVISION Parents/guardians are responsible for their child's supervision if the child has more than a 30-minute break in their schedule. Children are supervised by Summer School staff during recess (9:45-10:15 a.m.) and lunch (12:00-12:30 p.m.). The school should also be notified in writing if parents want their children (only 5th graders) to walk themselves to the middle or high school parts of the campus.

Children enrolled in the Summer Tennis program will be accompanied by TA staff (middle or high school students) from the Elementary School to the tennis courts. Children must also be enrolled in a Mid-Pacific Elementary summer class. Parents will be responsible for picking up their child at the tennis class if the child is not returning to the Elementary summer program.

Escort from the Elementary School to the swimming pool and back will be provided for Kindergarten through grade 5 students who are enrolled in the Summer Swim program at 1:00, 1:45, 2:30, 3:15, and 4:00 p.m. Children will be escorted by TA staff (middle or high school students). Children must also be enrolled in a Mid-Pacific Elementary summer class. Children must be able to change into and out of their swimwear by themselves. Parents will be responsible for picking up their child at the swimming pool at the end of their swim class if the child is not returning to the Elementary summer program.

Preschool KEIKI SUMMER FUN N SUN SE8000 | $1,607 | 6/10-7/12 | 8:00am-2:30pm | Entering PK For Mid-Pacific students only. Daily explorations through story making, drama, water play, dance, song, and artistic adventures. Children will go on walks through the campus. Schedule includes time for snacks, lunch, and afternoon nap. Children will need to bring their own healthy snacks and beverages. All children MUST be toilet-trained.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE SE9010 | $578 | 6/10-7/12 | 2:30-5:00pm | Entering grades PK-5 For preschoolers (Mid-Pacific preschoolers only) and students entering Kindergarten to grade 5. This summer session is intended to help students transition to Kindergarten by exploring the campus, adjusting to a schedule, and understanding their learning space in a classroom. Students will explore in-depth an inquiry topic through the integration of art, reading, movement, games, singing, science, and storytelling activities. The children will practice cooperative and collaborative skills in learning centers of their own choice. Excursions will be scheduled to enrich their learning experiences.

KEIKI HULA SE6060 | $525 | 6/10-7/12 | 10:15am-12:00pm | Entering grades 1-2 Students will learn the stories, traditions and culture of Hawaiʻi through dance, chant and song. Instructor is a member of Hālau I Ka Wēkiu under the guidance of Mid-Pacific's Kumu Hula Michael Lanakila Casupang.

Students will be introduced to water polo. This group would primarily be the splash ball variation of water polo and teaching the most fundamental skills such as eggbeater (treading water), handling the ball, and having fun (75% fun, 25% skill development). "Splash ball" is relaxed rules, and players are allowed to use floating noodles and touch the ball with two hands. This class offers a chance to try out a sport that is unique, fun, and challenging. Summer Swim and Tennis

By registering and submitting payment for Mid-Pacific Summer School, students and their parents and/or guardians agree to adhere to policies and procedures outlined in the summer school catalog. They also give Mid-Pacific permission to photograph and/or video their child for use in audio, video, film, or any other electronic, digital, or printed Mid-Pacific media.

Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Three two-week sessions, Monday through Friday (except Kamehameha Day and Fourth of July holidays). Ability and age grouping.

SWIM Availability of instructional levels is based upon demand. Low enrollment at a specific level may result in cancellation of classes at that level, especially when demand for class space is greater at other levels. Make-up class will be allowed for absences due to illness or emergencies only if arrangements are made with the sports office. Pets are not allowed near swimming pool.

TINY TOTS Maximum class size: 3

Tiny Tots I (ages 3-4) Water adjustment plus beginner skills. Tiny Tots II (age 5) Water adjustment plus beginner skills.

Tiny Tots III (age 3-5) Willing to put face in water. Water adjustment plus beginner skills.

Tiny Tots IV (ages 3-5) Can jump into water and swim unaided to the side of pool.

REGULAR Maximum class size: 5

Beginner (ages 6-15) Willing to put face in water, but cannot swim.

Adult Beginner (ages 16 and up) Willing to put face in water, but cannot swim.

Intermediate Beginner (ages 6 and up) Water adjusted, but cannot swim more than 10 yards.

Advanced Beginner (ages 6 and up) Can swim front crawl 15 yards and breathe rhythmically, can do the back crawl and elementary backstroke, and can tread water and survival float. The class will stress increasing endurance and improving skills.

Intermediate Swimmer (ages 6 and up) Can swim the front and back crawl and the elementary backstroke. The class will stress learning side and breast strokes, increase endurance, and improving form on all skills. First aid and survival techniques are also taught.

TENNIS The Mid-Pacific offers tennis programs are for students in all grades and of all skill levels. We offer a range of classes to accommodate the beginning tennis player up to the high-performance athlete including all levels in-between. Participants will have the opportunity to develop level-specific skills, to engage in competitive situations, and to have fun playing a lifetime sport with friends and peers.
