The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the bird for mirth,

You’re nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.

In May and June, the Shenandoah Valley shows us how deeply God loves us by the beauty planted all around us. Flowering trees! Growing gardens! Our beloved ancient mountains full of verdant life once again. It’s easy to understand why God would choose to place Adam and Eve in Eden where everything both needed and beautiful was provided. According to Genesis 3, even God enjoyed strolling in the garden in the cool of the day (me, too!). Our church is now part of a brand-new Community Garden—about 8 raised beds to begin with. Adam and Julie Conner are taking leadership of the garden as we begin with the help of the youth group and others who would like to be a part. The Community Garden is on the land of the former Wayne Hills UMC (now called “Embrace Waynesboro”) and we look forward to donating some of the food grown to the Food Pantry and offering a cooking class or two this summer in our church kitchen. As the school year comes to an end in May, we say a big Thank You to Preschool Director, Anne Ramsey, and her excellent staff. This is the 50th Anniversary of our Preschool and the children are an intense joy to us all. Thanks to Dawn LeMasney, Director of Children’s Ministry, who leads our excellent Wonderful Wednesday program for grade school children, leads our Sunday children’s programs (Sunday School, Children’s Church) and is preparing for VBS in June. Thanks to Adam Conner, Director of Youth Ministry, for leading our Youth Sunday School and Youth Group with creativity and faithfulness. We will have the joy of our children and youth giving their leadership on Youth Sunday, May 12. Adam has a wonderful Mission Week planned for our youth in June, in West Virginia.

from the pastor’s heart

This column will routinely feature Library Updates and Guest Book Reviews.

A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout Amanda overcomes a troubled childhood and travels the world while pursuing a career in Journalism. She ends up in Somalia with a

friend, where they were kidnapped, and held for 460 days. She was willing to try anything to survive, including turning to Islam and making an imaginary safe place in her mind. Her compassion toward her abusers inspired me. This book strengthened my faith and taught me a lesson in forgiveness. No matter the depths of her abuse, they could not kill her spirit, her faith and her hope that she would be released. Guest Review by Joyce Waymeyer

BOOK CLUB Thursday morning Book Club (9:30 a.m., library) is continuing with Eric Weiner’s “The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places on Earth.” We will meet on May 2 but NOT during the rest of May. We will resume on June 6.

Main Street Preschool Happenings…

Main Street Preschool Happenings… Thank you to everyone who attended or helped with our annual Spring Dinner & Show. It was a wonderful evening that could not have happened without the help and support of many! Your generosity and support of the students and the preschool scholarship fund is greatly appreciated!

On Thursday, April 18th, MSP held our annual Easter Eggstravaganza. The children enjoyed creating crafts and searching for eggs. We read the book “What Is Easter” and learned that Easter is about so much more than pretty dresses, chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs! What a wonderful way to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord!

A special thank you to Sgt. Smith from the Waynesboro Police Department for visiting with each of our classes! He did a wonderful job making the students feel comfortable and teaching them about his role as a community helper.

It’s hard to believe that the school year will soon be coming to a close. We would like to invite everyone to attend our Preschool Graduation on Wednesday, May 15th at 10:00 am. A small reception will follow immediately afterwards in the fellowship hall.

Thank you for keeping our school and students in your prayers this year! We are incredibly blessed to have wonderful students, an amazing staff and an overwhelmingly supportive church family! Blessings! Anne Ramsey, Director

WE’LL BE AWAY Pastor Linda and David are gratefully planning to visit their daughter Abigail, in Germany for two weeks in May (6-22). Abi is stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base south of Frankfurt. We hope to travel by

THANK YOU…THANK YOU…THANK YOU!

A special thank you to Main Street UMC for hosting the WARM (Waynesboro Area Refuge Ministry) Cold Weather Shelter from March 4 through March 11. The stated mission of WARM, Inc. is “to be a Christian community showing Christ’s love through shelter and support of the homeless.” This program provides a seasonal evening shelter for homeless adults in our community. Main Street’s participation certainly met the purpose of WARM!

In providing this shelter, Over 70 Main Street individuals volunteered 28 meals and snacks were prepared and served Fellowship Hall was arranged as sleeping and dining area

for 7 days Overnight monitoring was provided for 7 nights Support and fellowship was given to over 35 individuals Ash Wednesday and Sunday Worship Service participation

was encouraged

Through more than 350 volunteer hours, you provided a non-judgmental atmosphere of Christian fellowship in response to the physical and spiritual needs of Waynesboro/Augusta County individuals.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I

was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Matthew 25:35-40.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Our heartfelt thanks to Robert Horowitz and Barbara Atchison for the beautiful Passover Seder that we celebrated on Sunday, April 14. One hundred of us filled the Fellowship Hall, with a full sit-down supper prepared by the Goalder

family & helpers. Our thanks to Adam Conner and the Youth Group for their help and support. Thanks to the set-up crew and cleanup crew, organized by Judy von Bernuth. What a special evening! Robert lead us through a Seder recital of God’s faithfulness to the Hebrew people, enslaved by Pharaoh.

BIBLE STUDY Wednesday night Bible Study will not meet in May. May is a busy month with recitals and graduations, which generally affects our attendance. We will begin our Bible Study again in June, after VBS Week. The Gospel of Mark will be our next focus!
