SECOND QUARTER 2019-2020 2 Lathalain Human Rights and Democracy Week, binigyang pansin

Kasabay nito ay ang pagtalakay ng Minimum Age of Criminal Responsi-bility and Voter’s Education na pinangunahan nina Ms. Faye Alma G. Balanon at Mr. Carlo M. Diño na naganap noong September 19, 2019 sa Bro. Rafael S. Donato FSC Center for the Performing Arts.

OPINION

The ‘No Homework Policy’ has been proposed by lawmakers at the House of Representatives which aims to prohibit teachers from assigning stu-dents academic work that should be completed outside the regular school hours. This might sound like a great news to most students who have been taking home-work as a gruesome work and burden to their life. Surprisingly, DepEd has ex-pressed its support to this policy stating that this would “enable learners to have more quality time with their parents, family, and friends by limiting the homework [and] assignment to a reasonable quantity on school days and by eliminating the same during weekends.” It added that the measure would allow the students to find balance between their academic development and personal growth as it pro-vides ample time for enjoyable activities with their families.

As students of ANHS, we do not agree to such proposition. We believe that giving homework is our teachers’ way of assessing our learning and skills after a given lesson or training. This is a follow-up validation of the effectiveness of their teaching-learning approaches and efforts to their students. We have al-ready accepted in our system that homework is part of a student’s life. We do not see it as punishment or senseless burden to us, but it serves as a challenging opportunity to learn more.

Most of the students of ANHS are working at the same time. It is undenia-ble that a couple of homework from several subjects add more pressure and bur-den to them as they do not have much time to rest and socialize. On the other hand, as adults, this is teaching them to manage their time wisely, prioritize their tasks, and do their best to be responsible in accomplishing the given activity. These skills are necessary for them to survive and be more successful in life.

Students can do their homework at home and it somehow limits them from procrastinating and sticking themselves on the screen with video games. This is an extended way of teaching them to value their time and spend it on more worthy and necessary things.

ANHS promotes blended learning which allows the students to do their homework online at home. We are totally fine with it. In this generation, we need to be equipped with skills and knowledge that are needed in 4th Industrial Revolu-tion, and these skills are not limited to be learned in the four corners of our class-room. Learning is a non-stop process. Through homework, we can improve our-selves and prepare for a more challenging life outside the school.

By Presila M. Casungcad, 9A

In celebration of the World Teacher’s Day, we decided to feature and laud two of the best teachers that we have here in ANHS. We believe that they de-serve a roaring recognition as they continue to commit themselves and share their time and skills to us in this community. Indeed, this school is blessed with out-standing educators who continuously provide quality education and selflessly spread their passion to help the marginalized. Let’s grab this avenue to know them

more.

MISS CRISTINA P. SARMIENTO Education: Master of Science in Teaching Major in Chemistry (MSTCHEM) - units, De La Salle University, Manila

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Far Eastern University, Manila Awards: Outstanding Teacher in ANHS for S.Y. 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2019. Length of Service in ANHS: 19 Years

How does the Outstanding Teacher Award affect your perception towards your work and yourself? The award is just an incentive. I look at it as part of God’s gift. What are your struggles and sacrifices for working in ANHS? Preparation o f le sson plan, activities and experiments can b e time consuming since I have multiple preparations. Likewise, classroom management, giving advice that will work well with student, dealing with different behaviors displayed in the classroom are some of the challenges. My travel time from home to school and vice versa is a big struggle since I live in Las Piñas City.

What is the secret to your strong commitment to ANHS? Teaching is a calling and a ministry. God placed me in ANHS for a certain reason and purpose that is to serve the stu-dents and community partners. Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” The Lord is the source of my strength and He is the strength of my life. What teaching strategies/principles have you been applying to your students? I use small group learning activities. I encourage the students to work together b y conducting scientific experiments and doing practical activities that can be applied to real-life situations. What is your advice to your fellow Lasallians and to the young educators out there? Use your time wise ly so that you can sub mit the req uirements on time . Have patience and take time for yourself—relax, exercise, and go out for a date!

MR. JOSE ALBERT M. MUTUC Education: Trainers Methodology Level 1, Asian Entrepreneurs Technological Institute Inc./ Hairdressing National Certificate II,

TESDA Awards: Outstanding TVET Trainer in ANHS for S.Y. 2013 and 2019 Length of Service in ANHS: 11 Years

How does the Outstanding Teacher Award affect your perception towards your work and yourself? I was awarded my first outstand-ing teacher recognition during my fifth year of teaching at the ANHS TVET program of La Salle Green Hills. During that time ,for me, it felt more like a gratitude from the school for being part of this institution. After that I felt like I wanted to learn more, so I can teach more. I wanted to become more effective and a better educator. This year, I was blessed to be recognized again as an outstanding teacher/trainer and it somehow felt different. It felt like my work and my capacity to teach was validated and that I was doing a good job. For me to be recognized by such an institu-tion like La Salle Green Hills is like an added fuel to keep the fire burning inside me, and that is exactly how I feel. What are your struggles and sacrifices for working in ANHS? As a full-time businessman running two hair salons and being a part-time

teacher, the biggest challenge for me is balancing my busy schedule. Both business and teaching have their own demands and it can get really overwhelming sometimes. Sometimes you need to meet a lot of deadlines for the school during a busy schedule in the salon. Staying late at night after a tiring day in the salon to finish a lesson plan or a presentation to the class can be inevitable at times. What is the secret to your strong commitment to ANHS? I guess my secret for staying committed to ANHS are my students. Being able to share my knowledge and seeing that somehow helped change lives to some of them. Having the chance to work abroad to have a better income or putting up their own salon after a year or two, I guess that is our reward as teachers. The privilege of being a part of a beautiful change to someone’s life is a great thing to be committed to. What teaching strategies/principles have you been applying to your students? I have always b een a be liever of Happy Learning. I th ink lessons should b e presented not only as interesting but fun as well. As a student, I can recall that I enjoyed going to class with my teachers who are fun and not too formal. Having that balance makes your class far from being boring. I myself do my research by watching tutorials and interesting vlogs of what is new with regard to beauty and fashion. Whenever I come across an interesting tutorial or vlog that I know would benefit my students, I always make it a point to share it with them. I find it effective because there were times that they were the ones who would recommend something for me to watch. I often encourage my students to find time to practice the new skills that they learned from the school. As a hairdresser myself looking back from the time I started, I would say that it took me five years of practice before I can call myself a real hairdresser who knows and understands what I was doing. What is your advice to your fellow Lasallians and to the young educators out there? I th ink my advice would b e, to try to be with the right group of people . Sur-round yourself with happy and positive people whom you can learn from and are fun to be with.

Indeed, LSGH-ANHS is packed with highly-skilled and genuinely passionate teachers and trainers who continue to inspire, care, and hone their students who once had lost their dreams, self-worth and purpose in life. Hence, we invite and encourage the last, the least, and the lost out there to rekindle your hope and strive to be a better person by getting yourself a good education. It’s never too late. You are very much welcome in this school. LSGH-ANHS accepts you and is willing to help you reach your dreams and live a new and better life. Animo!
