Welcome to NCC! Norwalk Community College (NCC) offers approximately 40 Associate Degree programs designed to help you succeed in today’s job market. You can use your associate degree as a career credential or continue on for a four-year degree. In fact, many of our graduates do transfer to four-year colleges in their junior year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their college education. NCC also offers 20 Certificate programs, each designed to help you obtain specific skills, earn an important academic credential, or pursue an interest in greater depth.

It is not the con-firmation number (i.e. G00…) you received with your online application. A derivation of the Banner ID is used to create your log-on account, or NetID, for access to CSCU online services, such as the myCommNet portal, student email and more. (See page 5 for full instructions on accessing your account with your NetID.)

If you have questions about your application, contact Admissions at (203) 857-7068.

To register for a workshop, go to https://norwalk.edu/paw-workshop. Workshops are held on the East Campus and last approximately 2½ hours each. English as a Second Language (ESL) students are advised to contact the ESL Department in Room E206, (203) 857-7093, to sign up for an ESL PAW session specifically designed for non-native speakers. myPATHNorwalk Community College provides “myPATH,” a grounding framework for a student’s journey here. It supports you to grow, persist, graduate and achieve your goals. It is called “my” PATH because NCC seeks to provide students with the resources necessary to support your unique path to your dreams and aspirations. Students are encouraged to become the “owners of their own vision and agents for their own success.” The PATH acronym stands for:

(P) PLAN AHEAD for academic, career, and financial suc-cess. Students connect with advisors, explore major and career interests, evaluate transfer opportunities, and learn about financial options. (A) ACCESS RESOURCES to strengthen academic and leadership skills. Students learn with their peers, join student clubs, connect to campus services, and are called to be active in their education. (T) THINK CRITICALLY about your community at NCC and beyond. NCC asks students to reflect on their experi-ences, connect with people from different backgrounds, build their support network, and always consider the source of your information. (H) HEAD OUT confidently on your path to success. As you work toward your goals, we want you to commit to your own success, create your future, inspire others to make a difference and stay connected.

For more information on ways to get onto your path and suc-ceed on your path, visit https://norwalk.edu/current-students. This initiative is funded by a grant from the Title V Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Photo ID is required at the front counter of the Financial Aid Office when inquiring about your Financial Aid status. Please be sure to bring your driver’s license, State ID or NCC Student ID with you. Parents please be advised that student information, includ-ing financial aid information, cannot be given to the parent without the student present or without a signed release form. ONLY the student can fill out a release form in the Financial Aid Office in room E105. Please refer to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) information provided at https://norwalk.edu/ferpa that explains confidentiality at NCC.

Getting Started1. Create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). If you do not

have an FSA ID go to https://studentaid.gov to apply for one. The FSA ID will allow you to sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application online. Dependent students need to have one parent apply for an FSA ID also.

TIP: You will need your FSA ID each time you file or make corrections to your FAFSA. You must keep your FSA ID login information in a safe place so you can easily access your FAFSA application. You may want to keep your FSA ID information with your tax documents so you will always know where it is.

2. Apply for Federal, State and NCC aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)* at https://studentaid.gov. Applying for your FAFSA application is a FREE process; make sure you use the U.S. Department of Education’s website. must provide your 2018 tax information Note: Use the Data Retrieval Tool. This tool allows stu-

dents and parents to access the IRS tax return information needed to complete you FAFSA, and transfer the data directly into your FAFSA from the IRS website.

• Your Permanent Resident Card (if applicable)

• Records of Untaxed Income Payments of tax-deferred pension, retirement savings

plans, Child Support received, Veterans non-education benefits, etc.

3. Use myCommNet to track the progress of your financial aid application. (How to log in can be found on page 5.) You will be able to monitor your financial aid progress and view your eligibility once you have completed all financial aid requirements. This is done through the Banner Students and Faculty Service tab, under the Financial Aid tab, and by clicking on Eligibility Requirements. (See page 5 for more details.)• Your application may be selected for Verification as part

of a random selection process, or because of incomplete or conflicting information provided. If selected for Verifica-tion, you will receive an email from the NCC Financial Aid Office with the steps you will need to take. It is criti-cal that students complete the Verification process in order to be eligible for Financial Aid.

4. Review your Financial Aid Award. When we complete our review of your financial aid application, we will notify you at your email address and direct you to view your award through myCommNet.

5. To maintain Financial Aid eligibility, students must main-tain good academic standing and be making satisfactory aca-demic progress. Visit www.norwalk.edu/finaid/sap-policy for more information.

Please contact the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions. We are here to assist you at [email protected] or call us at (203) 857-7023.The 2020-2021 Aid Application for CT Undocumented Students (AACTUS) is here. Do not miss out!

All first-time students are placed into courses based on an assess-ment of their academic readiness to take college-level courses. Most students must take a placement test*—a computerized skills assessment of reading comprehension, writing and mathematics abilities. Students who have taken any ESL coursework in high school (grades 9-12) must also take the ESL test. The results will provide you and your NCC advisor with the information needed to place you in courses appropriate to your educational back-ground and ability. To sign up for a placement test, you must first submit an application to NCC and receive your permanent NCC Banner ID number. Testing is by appointment only, once you have received your permanent Banner ID number. Schedule your test at www.norwalk.edu/placement-testing. Allow yourself plenty of time to take the test so that you can do your best. To view your placement test results, log into your Student Account. Click on the “Banner Self-Service” link, the “Registration/Schedule Tab,” “Items That May Prevent Registration,” and “Check Placement Test Recommendations.” If you have taken the ESL Test, you

should also receive an email with your course placement directly from the ESL Division. You may be exempt if you have prior college English composi-tion and math credits, or SAT or ACT scores at certain levels. See the placement testing page on the NCC website for details. https://norwalk.edu/placement-testing After submitting SAT/ACT scores or completing the NCC placement test, you will receive registration instructions.

* The Mathematics Department strongly suggests that you review your math skills before taking the test. Practice questions are available on the Placement Testing page. https://norwalk.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/cptitema.pdf

2020-2021 Registration Guide 5

Your application must be complete in order to access your student myCommNet account. Access to new student accounts may take up to 24 hours after Admissions has processed your application. Your NetID is your college network user name, and it allows you to log on to computers in the library and labs. Your NetID also gives you entry to http://my.commnet.edu, the “portal” entry to Connecticut Community College online services: library services, online registration, academic transcripts, grades, Blackboard Learn and more.

Logging On for the First TimeYour log-on account, or NetID, is derived from your Banner ID. You received your Banner ID when you were admitted. It is not the confirmation number (i.e. G00...) you received with your online application. The Banner ID begins with the @ symbol following the eight numbers (for example, @01234567). Your NetID removes the leading @ symbol, and adds the student domain (for example, [email protected]). Your initial password is made up of the following personal information:

• The first three characters of your birth month (with the first letter capitalized)

• The “&” symbol• The last four digits of your Social Security Number (for

example: Apr&1899). If you did not provide a social secu-rity number, please go to the Records Office, room E102, with a valid photo ID to request a password.

The password is case sensitive. You will be prompted to change your password. For additional information, go to www.norwalk.edu, click on myCommNet at the top right of the page (in the blue band), then log in to myCommNet. If you don’t know your NetID, click on Forgot your Net ID. You will then be directed to the NetID Lookup where you can enter your personal information. Note: The first time you log in to a college computer, you will be required to change your password and to set a security question. There will be a choice of questions and you will need to pick one and provide an answer. You will have two minutes to type in and then confirm your new password. If you exceed the time limit you will need to start over, so be prepared by thinking of

a new password before you log in for the first time! If you ever need to reset your password, you will be prompted to choose the same security question and give the same answer.

How do I create a password that will work?Your password must be at least eight characters, and must include three of the following types of characters:

• an upper case letter (A to Z) • a lower case letter (a to z) • a number (0 to 9) • punctuation or symbols: ! @ # ^ & * ( ) _ + | ~ - = ̀ { . } [ ] : “ ; ‘ ? , /

Your password cannot contain any part of your name, your NetID, or your Social Security Number. Here are some examples of passwords that satisfy the above requirements: Egg2Salad #75chase RedSox05 Out2lunch Fido2006 67MustangYou may use the kiosks located throughout the NCC campus to reset your password, or go to the www.commnet.edu/netid website and follow these five easy steps: 1. Think of a new password (using requirements listed above) 2. Enter your NetID (your student ID without the @ sign) 3. Enter your Birth Date and Social Security Number 4. Provide the answer to your Security Question 5. Enter the new password you created in Step 1.

What can I do if that doesn’t work?If you don’t have a Social Security Number you will not be able to use the kiosks or the website to reset your password. Instead, bring your photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or NCC ID card) to the I.T. Office (room E319) or the Records Office (room E102), and a staff member will help you. For any other problems you may encounter at a kiosk or on the website, bring your valid photo ID (driver’s license, pass-port, or NCC ID card) to the I.T. Office (room E319) or the Records Office (room E102) and a staff member will help you. For further password reset options via email, go to www. commnet.edu/netid and select “Reset Forgotten Password.”

• Final date to receive 100% tuition refund is the day prior to beginning of semester.

• Final date to drop via web with 100% tuition refund is the day prior to beginning of semester.

• Final date to receive a 50% tuition refund is determined by college policy according to the number of weeks in the term. The 50% tuition refund is through the 14th calendar day of the full Fall or Spring semester and is pro-rated provid-ing for shorter refund periods for shorter Fall and Spring terms. Please refer to the college calendar on the NCC website for the exact refund dates for each term. https://nor-walk.edu/academics/calendar

Application and registration fees are always non-refundable.

Tuition WaiversConnecticut Senior Citizens 62 and older pay no tuition or fees, with the exception of clinical, material and supplemental, for General Fund courses on a space available basis to be deter-mined by Senior Registration Day (check date/time online at https://norwalk.edu/academics/calendar). Proof of age must be shown and a Waiver of Tuition and Fees Form completed in the Business Office to finalize the senior registration process. A senior citizen may register early by paying for the course; however, paying for the course negates the senior waiver for that course. No refund will be issued if the course is dropped, then re-added on senior registration day.

Course ListingsFor a complete listing of all available courses, please go to the NCC website at www.norwalk.edu and click on the “Academics” tab, then “Course Search.” You will then be on the Connecticut Community College Course Search page where you will be able to access real-time information regarding course availability.

Course Prerequisites Many college courses have prerequisites that indicate the prior knowledge and skills students need to succeed in the course. It is the responsibility of the student to meet these course prerequisites before enrolling. To determine if prerequisites are required for the course you wish to take, go to the NCC website at www.norwalk.edu and click on the “Academics” tab, then “Course Descriptions.” If you have fulfilled the prerequisite at NCC, you can proceed to online registration. If you have taken the prerequisite at a different college that has not been added to your NCC transcript, you will need to request an override to be entered on your behalf in order to register for the course.

Email the director or chair of the department for the course you want to take (see back cover). In the email indicate:

• Your name• Your Banner ID• The semester for which you wish to register • The course CRN • The course number and section (example: ACC D113-02)• The reason why you are requesting the override; attach an

unofficial transcript with the prerequisite listed. You will receive a reply email within three business days. If the override has been approved, you will be able to register online.

English RequirementsStudents are required to enroll in an appropriate Englishcourse after completing nine credits unless they can demonstrate proficiency in written English. If you fail or withdraw from a required English course, it must be repeated in your next semester of enrollment.

Students taking online or online/campus hybrid courses for the first time should plan to attend a scheduled orientation on campus. For information regarding online/hybrid orientation dates and times, please contact Lois Aime at [email protected] or (203) 857-7288.

Technical RequirementsIn order to take an online or online/campus hybrid course, you must have access to a computer with Internet access that meets the following requirements:

• Windows: XP/8/10, if using Microsoft Edge, Firefox 31+ or higher, or Google Chrome 36+ or higher

• Mac Operating System: OS 10.8.x, or 10.9.x Firefox 3.x or higher or Chrome OS

Additional Notes: All browsers require JavaScript, Java, Popups, Cookies to be enabled and Flash to be enabled. Microsoft Edge will NOT work with myCommNet or Blackboard. For Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge, you must install Internet Explorer 11.

Online CoursesAll communications, assignments, tests, etc. take place on the Internet using a course management system called Blackboard, at a time and place that is convenient for you. You DO NOT have to attend “class” at a specific time on campus. You DO need to have strong time management and organizational skills. Online classes are not easier—just more convenient.

Online/Campus Hybrid Courses These classes can have any number of formats. But, they are all taught partially in a campus classroom at a required time and partially online using Blackboard. You may be required to meet on campus as much as once a week or as little as three times a semester. This will vary with each course, so be sure to check the schedule carefully and verify this with your professor on the first day of class when taking a hybrid course. Hybrid courses allow you the flexibility of working in an online environment while still meeting with your instructor and classmates in a classroom. You continue to have the support that you receive in a classroom environment, but you do not have to spend as much time on campus. For those of you who are working or have family obligations, or perhaps both, this form of class structure offers you the flexibility you need to go to school while meeting those obligations. For more information on taking online or online/campus hybrid courses at NCC, go to http://www.norwalk.edu/distance-learning. This site lists system requirements, various fixes for technical difficulties, has links to add-ins you might need to download and other pertinent information.

Computer Courses Students enrolling in a computer course should check the course description for equipment and system requirements and restrictions.

CSCU Transfer Tickets

The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU)

system has developed Transfer Tickets to provide pathways to

a four-year degree. Transfer Tickets are degree programs for

Connecticut community college students that easily transfer to

Connecticut State Universities and Charter Oak State College.

Upon graduation from NCC, students are guaranteed

full junior status at a four-year institution that is part of the

CSCU system. They can complete a bachelor’s degree in their

major with the assurance they will not lose any credits or be

required to take any extra credits. (Select programs may have

additional admission requirements.)

Students choose a transfer degree program just as they

would a major field for an associate degree, but take only the

courses that apply to both the major’s associate degree and

its bachelor’s degree.

Transfer Tickets are currently available in the following

majors, and new ones will be added each year: Art, Biology,

Business, Chemistry, Commu-

nication, Criminology, Early

Childhood Teacher Credential,

English, French, German,

History, Italian, Mathematics,

Physics, Political Science,

Psychology, Sociology, Social

Work and Spanish.

To learn more about

CSCU’s Transfer Tickets, visit

www.ct.edu/transfer. An interactive guidance system will

walk you through the program.

To register for a specific Pathway Transfer degree program,

please use the Banner Program Codes listed below. Students

should contact their advisor for information regarding transfer

credits in specific programs.
