Upcoming events

Six talented young instrumental music students from ISC recently attended the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) Middle School. SHEP is an educational program that is run by Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University for young musicians and gives them the opportunity to work with a team of eminent university conductors. Participants travel from Mackay north and west to the State border for this innovative and intensive weekend program.

Kyanna Wirth, Eliza Cook, Jordann Lyons, Ashleigh Binello, Caitlin Hegarty and Matthew Haigh participated in this event, which was held at St Mary’s Catholic College from 23 - 25 October. Students worked under the experienced batons of Alex Khafagi (strings), Kate Albury (vocal) and Jeanette Douglas (wind ensemble). These students proudly represented ISC in a Grand Finale Concert at the end of the weekend. Congratulations to all musicians for a job well done!

106 wonderful, hard-working students were awarded prizes and bursaries to the value of $10 450 last week at six awards ceremonies. These funds were generously donated by our amazing community in a true show of “Community Pride” and every cent donated was presented to students. Academic achievement, community spirit, striving for improvement, and teamwork and leadership were all acknowledged as traits we value highly. We are indebted to our supporters for this partnership in education.

Recently, 53 of our year 12 students completed no fewer than 23 external exams; the first of their kind in the new Queensland senior system for university entrance. The Cassowary Coast Regional Council made available, free of charge, the Disaster Management Centre, which we sensibly renamed the “Exam Centre” for the three-and-a-half week exam period. Our students are now awaiting the external marking of their exams and await the release of final results and ATARs (formerly OPs) on 19th December. Universities have this year extended early entry offers and we are very proud that 10 of our graduates have already received offers to study Engineering, Education, Marine Science, Music, IT, Business, Animation & Visual Effect, Crime & Justice at Griffith University, JCU, TAFE, and the Conservatorium of Music. We anticipate many more university offers over the next weeks.

Over the past three weeks, we have undertaken our student leadership selection processes in years 7 to 11 and we have identified our student council representatives for the 2021 school year. A record number of students made up a very strong field of candidates in every year level, leaving students and staff spoilt for choice. I extend my sincere thanks to all student leaders who contributed to the work of student council in what was a most challenging year in 2020, and my congratulations and admiration for every student who nominated to become a leader in 2021. Stepping forward for any public service is most admirable, and student leadership is no different. Next February we will welcome our successful nominees at the Student Leaders & Seniors Induction Ceremony.

Celebrating student success

It’s time to check under the bed and in the depths of your school bag for all your school text books and library books! As students complete final exams and assessments, please return all resources to the library so they can be re-conditioned as required and made ready for hiring to new learners in 2021. If you are uncertain what resources you are looking for, please email our library at [email protected] for a complete list of outstanding loans. Invoices will be issued for texts not returned.
