2020 Ball State Spring Prospectus

@BallStateFB•@BSUCoachNeu• 2020CardinalFootball • @BallStateSports • BallStateSports.com– 2 – – 2 –

Spring ChirpsPOTENTOFFENSEISREADYFORMORE• Ball State’s offense led the Mid-American Conference in both scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463.0 yards per game) last fall. The Cardinals return their quarterback (Drew Plitt), featured running back (Caleb Huntley) and top wide receiver (Justin Hall) from that squad.

WINNINGTHETURNOVERBATTLE• Ball State led the MAC in turnovers gained (24) and tied for the top mark in turnover margin (+8) last fall. The 24 forced turnovers also ranked 15th nationally.

HALLONPACETOSETNEWPROGRAMRECEPTIONSRECORD• Senior WR Justin Hall needs 37 receptions this fall to establish a new program record. He enters the year with 208 career catches. KeVonn Mabon (2012-16) holds the current record with 244 receptions. Hall led the Cards in receptions (61) and receiving yards (684) in 2019.

HUNTLEYLOOKINGTOJOINELITEGROUP• If senior RB Caleb Huntley can reach 1,000 yards rushing again this fall, he would become just the third player in Ball State history to eclipse that mark three times. The current list features Jahwan Edwards (2011-14) and Marcus Merriweather (1999-2002).

NEWCOACHINGFACES• Two new full time assistant coaches are on this year’s staff – Joey Hecklinski (QBs) and Josh Zidenberg (Passing Game Coordinator/DBs). Hecklinski was a graduate assistant for the Cards last fall. Zidenberg worked with defensive coordinator Tyler Stockton at Western Illinois in 2018. He was the special teams coordinator/safeties coach at William & Mary in 2019.

NEWOFFENSIVECOORDINATOR• Running backs coach Kevin Lynch is taking over the offensive coordinator duties from his brother, Joey, who moved on to Colorado State as CSU’s new offensive coordinator. Kevin Lynch is one of just 10 NCAA FBS offensive coordinators who is also serving as the running backs coach. The others are: Tony Elliott (Clemson), Newland Isaac (Coastal Carolina), Eddie Gran (Kentucky), Tim Albin (Ohio), Jerry Mack (Rice), Anthony Tucker (UCF), Brian Smith (Washington State), Chad Scott (West Virginia) and Ryan Aplin (WKU).

LOTSOFEXPERIENCEONROSTER• Ball State returns 48 total letterwinners and 16 starters (including specialists) from last year’s 5-7 (4-4 MAC) squad. Among the returning group are six all-league players -- OL Curtis Blackwell, WR Justin Hall, RB Caleb Huntley, CB Antonio Phillips, ILB Jaylin Thomas

and CB Amechi Uzodinma II .

INDOORPRACTICEFACILITYBECOMINGAREALITY• The groundbreaking for the Scheumann Family Indoor Practice Facility is expected to happen this spring. The 84,000 square-foot facility will feature a field-turf surface measuring 360 feet by 160 feet and regulation-sized competition field with a ceiling height of 65 feet. Retractable netting, batting cages and storage will provide the necessary amenities for teams to conduct training. The anticipated opening date for the $15-million building is Summer 2021.

LOOKINGTOGOBOWLING• Ball State aims to return to the bowl scene this fall. The Cardinals went to the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg following the 2012 season and the GoDaddy Bowl after the 2013 campaign. However, Ball State fell short of bowl eligibility each of the last six seasons.

OHSOCLOSE• In three of Ball State’s four MAC losses last fall, the Cardinals either had the lead or were tied with less than five minutes remaining.

BRONZESTALKTROPHYRETURNSTOBSU• Ball State reclaimed the Bronze Stalk trophy from Northern Illinois last season for the first time since 2008 in a 27-20 comeback win over the Huskies on Oct. 5. The Cardinals forced three second half turnovers and held NIU to just three points in the final 37 minutes to rally from a 17-3 deficit.

NEWFACESONTHEFIELD• Five new players joined the team in the spring semester – ILB Brandon Berger, K Brayden Johnson, TE Aaron Lehrman, RB Donny Marcus and RB Kyrin Perry . Berger is a grayshirt who originally signed with the Cardinals in December 2018. Lehrman and Perry both had fathers who played football at Ball State. Marcus was part of the December 2019 signing class.

EXTRAYEAROFELIGIBILITY• Since last summer, four Ball State players have been granted an extra playing season by the NCAA due to medical hardships – WR Antwan Davis, CB Isaac James, SAF Myles Hannah and LB Brandon Martin . Davis was granted an extra year in August and now has eligibility through the 2020 fall season. James joined Ball State as a graduate transfer a year ago. His eligibility also runs through the 2020 fall season. Hannah’s eligibility now lasts through the fall of 2022 while Martin can play through the fall of 2021.

Head Coach Mike Neu5thseasonatBallState|11thseasonasaheadcoach(includingarenaleague)19thseasonasafootballcoachHometown:Indianapolis,Ind.AlmaMater:BallState’94Family:wifeCharmin…threechildren–Graycen,CarsonandChase

@BSUCoachNeu

Ball State University welcomed back one of its own as Mike Neu was named the head coach for the Cardinal football program in January of 2016. Neu played collegiate football at Ball State where he was named 1993 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Neu has nearly 20 years of coaching experi-ence with stops in the National Football League (NFL), Division I FBS football and the arena leagues.

The Cardinals have made several strides forward under Neu’s leadership with the 2019 campaign the most memorable thus far. Ball State reclaimed the Bronze Stalk Trophy from Northern Illinois for the first time since 2008 with a come-from-behind 27-20 win over the Huskies in early October. The Cards then capped the year by knocking off eventual MAC cham-pion Miami to earn the Red Bird Rivalry Trophy, 41-27.

Ball State’s offense was statistically the most explosive in the conference last fall. The Car-dinals led the MAC in scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463 yards per game). On defense, BSU forced turnover after turnover all year. The 24 forced turnovers were the most in the conference and ranked 15th nationally.

Ten Cardinals came away with All-MAC ac-colades following the 2019 season, the most for a Ball State team since 2013. Over Neu’s four seasons as head coach, 23 players have been recognized on an all-league team. The football team also placed a league-high 20 players on the Academic All-MAC list this fall. Fifteen of those 20 Cardinals were making a return ap-pearance to that list.

Before returning to Ball State, Neu spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as the quarter-backs coach for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. In 2014 under Neu’s guidance, quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his franchise-record eighth Pro Bowl as a Saint. Brees led the league in completions (456), tied for first in passing yardage (4,952), ranked second in completion percentage (69.2) and tied for fifth in touch-down passes (33). In 2015, Brees once again led the NFL in passing yardage (4,870) while ranking second in completion percentage (68.3) and completions (428).

Neu, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, started 38-of-41 games at quarterback in his four seasons at Ball State (1990-93). He was honored with the MAC’s Vern Smith Award as the league’s most valuable player and the MAC

Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior. That year, Neu and the Cardinals went 8-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league action to capture the MAC championship. In one of his greatest games as a collegiate quarterback, Neu threw for a Ball State record 469 yards and completed 28-of-40 passes against Toledo in 1993 to help the Cardinals rally from a 30-3 deficit and record the largest comeback in Ball State history, a 31-30 Homecoming victory.

Neu played professionally in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League (AFL) from 1995-97 before beginning his coach-ing career in 1998 with the AFL’s Nashville Kats. In 2000, Neu was named head coach for the first time as he took over the Arena Football 2’s (AF2) Augusta Stallions. He led that organization to a conference title in 2000 with a 14-4 record and was named the AF2 Coach of the Year

In 2001 and 2002, Neu worked with the AFL’s Carolina Cobras. He served as the of-fensive coordinator in 2001 and was promoted to head coach in 2002. During his stint as head coach, Neu led the team to the quarterfinals of the AFL playoffs, including the team’s first-ever playoff win.

Neu then spent four years as head coach of the AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo. There, he compiled a 33-31 record and earned 2004 AFL Coach of the Year honors. During his first season at the helm, Neu led the team to a franchise-best 11-5 record, a division title and a playoff berth.

From 2008-12, Neu worked on the New Orleans Saints’ player personnel staff. He then spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Tulane as the quarterbacks coach. In 2013, Neu helped guide Tulane to a 7-6 overall record and its first postseason appearance in 11 years – the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Neu received his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Ball State in 1994 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the Cardinals during the 1994 season. He was in-ducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen (17), and two sons, Carson (16) and Chase (8).

2019 Box Scores and RecapsGame#1 Indiana . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34 vs.BallState . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24

Aug. 31, 2019 – Lucas Oil Stadium (21,437)

Recap Ball State found itself within a single posses-

sion late in both the third and fourth quarters, but Indiana answered both times on the way to a 34-24 victory in the Ruoff Kickoff Classic.

BSU quarterback Drew Plitt threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns, engineering a pair of scoring drives in the second half. But Indiana kicker Logan Justus went 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, including a 50-yarder with 2:15 to play, and the Hoosiers (1-0) sealed it with an interception of Plitt in the final minute.

Ball State struggled to get pressure on Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. who threw for 326 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The dual-threat signal caller also led the Hoosiers with 67 yards on the ground.

BSU intercepted Penix twice, with first-half takeaways from Amechi Uzodinma II and Antonio Phillips. But Penix also hit on a 75-yard touchdown pass to Nick Westbrook and consistently moved the Hoosiers offense.

Yo’Heinz Tyler finished with a team-high 71 receiving yards.

Bryce Cosby, Jacob White and Ray Wilborn – playing his first game at safety after moving from linebacker – led Ball State with nine tackles.

Sept. 7, 2019 – Scheumann Stadium (10,123)

Recap Drew Plitt tied the Ball State record with six

touchdown passes, and the Cardinals rolled up nearly 600 yards of offense in a 57-29 victory over Fordham on the newly minted Gainbridge Field at Scheumann Stadium.

Plitt’s 439 yards were 30 fewer than his head coach Mike Neu’s school record in the famous 1993 Homecoming comeback against Toledo. But Plitt didn’t get a chance at that one. His sixth touch-down pass of the day, matching Keith Wenning’s mark, was his final throw before John Paddock took the snaps on BSU’s final possessions.

Riley Miller and Antwan Davis were both on the receiving end of two touchdowns, while Justin Hall snagged a 50-yarder and Cody Rudy snuck out of the backfield and caught the first of his career. Miller led the way with 116 receiving yards, while Davis hauled in BSU career highs of five catches and 86 yards.

The Cardinals’ 57 points were the fourth-most in school history and their most since going for 60 in a five-overtime game at Western Michigan in 2005.

Sept. 14, 2019 – Scheumann Stadium (14,333)

RecapBall State created points off early turnovers, but

the Cardinals had a tough task defending a high-powered Florida Atlantic passing attack in a 41-31 setback at Scheumann Stadium.

The Cardinals finished with four turnovers on a sometimes wild afternoon that featured nearly 1,000 combined yards and six total takeaways.

FAU quarterback Chris Robison threw for 366 yards and connected with receiver John Mitchell for three of his four touchdown passes on the day. The Owls, coming off opening losses to top-20 teams Ohio State and UCF, scored late in the second quar-ter to take a 21-17 lead into the break and then pulled away in the second half.

Ball State looked primed to grab the lead back on its second possession of the third quarter only to see Caleb Huntley fumble at the 4-yard line, and FAU recovered in the endzone for a touchback.

The Owls moved down the field in just 1:34 and scored on a Larry McCammon touchdown run. So instead of taking the lead, the Cardinals found themselves trailing 28-17. FAU led by double digits the rest of the way.

Sept. 21, 2019 – Carter-Finley Stadium (57,702)

RecapBall State forced the first two NC State turnovers

of the season, turned the Wolfpack over on downs another time and couldn’t be faulted for any second-half points.

But two NC State touchdown drives before the break and two huge special teams plays in the sec-ond half propelled the Wolfpack to a 34-23 victory.

Drew Plitt, the nation’s third-leading passer entering the weekend, surpassed 300 yards for the third straight game. He attempted a career-high 57 passes and hit 35 of them. Ball State outgained NC State in total yards but lacked a little balance, man-aging just 84 yards rushing on 30 attempts, though Caleb Huntley averaged 4 yards a pop on 13 carries.

Ryan Rimmler made three second-half field goals, including two from 43 yards, to keep Ball State within striking distance. But it was also in the special teams area where NC State did its damage.

Thayer Thomas returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the third quarter, and Max Fisher blocked a punt to swing the fourth-quarter momentum seemingly moments after the BSU defense had come up with a big fourth-down stop.

Oct. 5, 2019 – Huskie Stadium (10,365)

RecapBall State forced three second-half turnovers and

Caleb Huntley got loose after the break, as the Car-dinals overcame an unremarkable first half to claim the Bronze Stalk trophy for the first time since 2008.

Huntley ran 35 times for 157 yards, two shy of his personal high, and two touchdowns, while Ryan Rimmler made good on a career-high four field goal attempts. The Ball State defense pitched a second-half shutout until the final minutes, and the BSU special teams units seemed to always leave the Huskies pinned against their own end zone.

The Cardinals outscored NIU 24-3 in the second half, including 21 unanswered points, despite not completing a single pass after the break. They only attempted three of them in weather conditions that made it difficult for either team to move the ball through the air.

Jordan Williams’ fumble recovery inside the NIU 10-yard line midway through in the third quarter was just the spark Ball State needed. Huntley found the end zone on the next play for the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the day. To that point, they had mustered just two Rimmler field goals.

After touchdowns on their opening two pos-sessions of the game, including one set up by an interception on Ball State’s first play from scrim-mage, the Huskies managed just two field goals the rest of the way.

Oct. 12, 2019 – Rynearson Stadium (17,852)

RecapBall State overtook Eastern Michigan in the

fourth quarter and held off the Eagles in the closing seconds for a 29-23 win. The Cardinals backed up last week’s Bronze Stalk victory to improve to 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2013 with back-to-back road wins for the first time since the same year.

BSU gave Eastern Michigan a steady dose of Caleb Huntley, just like it did to Northern Illinois last week. The junior back ran 29 times for 152 yards just seven days after grinding out 157 yards on 35 carries against the Huskies.

Drew Plitt completed 23-of-32 passes for 255 yards, hitting Yo’Heinz Tyler and Just Hall for touch-downs. He also scored twice on quarterback sneaks, the second of which gave Ball State its first lead with 11:36 to play.

The Cardinals’ defense finished it off from there. Ball State sacked EMU quarterback Mike Glass three times in the fourth quarter, picked him off for the third time and forced a fourth-down, red-zone fumble on the Eagles’ final snap of the game.

Jordan Williams’ strip sack sealed the win after some tense late moments, including a near touch-down catch from Arthur Jackson. The EMU receiver’s toe landed barely out of bounds, a call confirmed by replay. The Cardinals’ defense surrendered just one second-half score for the third straight game.

Oct. 19, 2019 – Scheumann Stadium (15,113)

RecapThe Cardinals rolled to a 52-14 victory in their first

home game in more than a month, remaining per-fect in MAC play and atop to West Division standings by manhandling the preseason division favorite.

The Rockets’ first-half numbers looked like this: 33 plays for 22 yards, minus-2 yards rushing, four sacks allowed, two fumbles lost, six consecutive punts … and zero points.

Meanwhile, it was big play after big play on of-fense in Ball State’s third straight win. Four of the Cardinals touchdowns came from more than 35 yards out, two of them via Malik Dunner. The con-verted running back took a double reverse 51 yards for one score and a jet sweep 39 yards for another.

BSU quarterback Drew Plitt threw only 17 times on the day, hitting 11 of them for 206 yards and three touchdowns. The Cardinals didn’t really need to throw. They were doing anything they wanted on the ground.

Caleb Huntley topped the century mark for the third straight week, pounding for 119 yards on 20 carries. Backfield mate Walter Fletcher added 68 yards and a touchdown. All said and done, the Car-dinals’ 374-yard rushing total was its highest since a record-setting, 463-yard performance in 2009 at Eastern Michigan.

Ball State’s 52 points were its most ever against Toledo.

Oct. 26, 2019 – Scheumann Stadium (5,572)

RecapThe Ball State football team suffered its first loss

in more than a month in a deluge Saturday after-noon at Scheumann Stadium.

On a day when both passing attacks were limited by the wet conditions, the game came down to who could move the ball most effectively on the ground.

Walter Fletcher kept the Cardinals in it, but the overall run game for Ohio was more consistent. Bobcat quarterback Nathan Rourke optioned his way to 127 yards and two touchdowns, O’Shaan Allison pounded for 104 yards, and De’Montre Tuggle ac-counted for two scores on the ground for the MAC preseason favorites.

Fletcher ran 14 times for 156 yards, seeing the bulk of the BSU carries after a first-half injury to Caleb Huntley. The graduate transfer set broke off a 73-yarder, the Cardinals’ longest of the season, for the second touchdown.

He found the end zone one more time, if only momentarily. That run would have made it a one-score game late in the third quarter, but it was called back for a holding penalty. Instead, the Cardinals had a field goal blocked and began the final stanza still down 27-14.

Ball State added a late touchdown on a tipped pass caught by Riley Miller, but not before a Rourke touch-down put the Cardinals in real catch-up mode late.

RecapFacing a 21-10 deficit at halftime, the Ball State

football team stormed back to take the lead and held a three-point advantage with under four minutes to play, but the host Broncos scored on their final drive to secure the 35-31 win Tuesday night.

Ball State established a dominant run game in the second half, earning 203 of its 261 rushing yards in the final 30 minutes. Caleb Huntley led the way with 120 yards and a touchdown while Walter Fletcher chipped in 72 yards and a score of his own.

The Ball State defense surrendered a total of 382 yards on the ground and 506 total yards. The Bron-cos converted 10-of-16 third downs and twice on fourth down to sustain drives throughout the game.

Both halves started picturesque for the Cardinals as Huntley punched in a five-yard score on Ball State’s first drive of the game. In the second half, Malik Dunner returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to start the Cardinals’ run.

The Cardinals scored on their next possession via a one-yard Drew Plitt quarterback sneak to take a 24-21 advantage. From there, the two teams traded leads the rest of the night with WMU capturing the final advantage with just 1:05 remaining.

RecapCentral Michigan overcame a 17-point deficit late

in the third quarter for a 45-44 win to keep its MAC West Division title hopes alive. There was no last-minute magic for Ball State this time like there was last year when the teams met in Mount Pleasant.

The Cardinals led by 17 on three occasions, the last of which came when Drew Plitt found Riley Miller for a touchdown with 2:31 to go in the third. But that was the last of Ball State’s five touchdowns on the day.

Central Michigan scored touchdowns on six of its last seven real possessions. Tommy Lazzarro’s quarterback run early in the fourth quarter pulled the Chippewas within three at 41-38. Ryan Rimmler briefly stemmed the tide with a field goal after the BSU defense’s only stop of the second half.

But Central Michigan went 10 plays in 4:03 and found the end zone on Lazzaro’s second touchdown run with 1:01 left for the decisive score.

The teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards in the game. The Cardinals rushed for 231, putting two rushers over 100 – Walter Fletcher (115) and Huntley (106). Plitt threw for 268 yards and three scores.

RecapFor the third straight game, the Ball State football

team was involved in a final-minute thriller. And for the third time in a row, the Cardinals came up on the short end of the stick.

Kent State’s Matthew Trickett connected on a 22-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining to lift the host Golden Flashes to a 41-38 victory over the Cardinals.

Kent State keeps its bowl hopes alive with the win. Ball State has now lost three consecutive league games by a total of eight points.

The setback put a damper on a career day for junior running back Caleb Huntley. The Atlanta, Georgia, native piled up a personal-best 192 rushing yards. Huntley’s final carry was a 42-yard scamper to the end zone on a 4th-and-1 play to tie the score at 38 with 4:14 left.

Huntley scored twice for Ball State as did fellow running back Walter Fletcher. Fletcher found the end zone on a six-yard rush and 33-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter. He finished a team-high 74 yards receiving.

The two teams combined for 1,173 yards of of-fense.

RecapBall State capped the year with a 41-27 victory

over Miami and made it even more memorable by coming from 17 points down and outscoring the MAC East Division champion RedHawks 27-0 in the second half.

The stats in this one really weren’t close. The Cardinals out-gained Miami 578-275 and limited the RedHawks to just 79 yards and one first down after halftime. The majority of that damage came on a 45-yard pass midway through the fourth quarter after BSU had already taken the lead.

Drew Plitt threw for 317 yards and three touch-downs -- two of them to Yo’Heinz Tyler -- and Caleb Huntley ran for 134 yards and three scores.

If not for blocked punts by Miami on back-to-back BSU possessions in the second quarter, this one might have been a runaway. Lonnie Phelps blocked the first one to set up a Miami touchdown and scooped up the next one for a score of his own to stake the RedHawks to a 24-7 lead early in the second quarter.

But the rout was not on for Miami. Instead, the script completely flipped. Ball State outscored the RedHawks 34-3 the rest of the way.
