When we launched Barista Magazine in 2005, we heard a lot of questions and skepticism. Weren’t baristas just kids holding out for a “real” job? Wasn’t print dying as everything shifted to digital platforms? At first glance, these were reasonable questions. But we firmly believed not only in the people we sought to serve,

but in the medium we chose first and foremost to serve them with: print. Fifteen years later, we feel our vision has been vindicated.

Consider the people Barista Magazine featured in our first few years who are now considered some of our industry’s most valued resources: Lem Butler, co-founder of Black & White Coffee Roasters; Klaus Thompsen, co-founder of Copenhagen’s world-famous Coffee Collective, and Klatch Coffee’s Heather Perry who is just finishing her term as president of the Specialty Coffee Association. We believed in them back when they were “just baristas.” It’s been our honor to serve this vibrant community as it has proliferated and gained strength across the globe.

In the same way that perhaps the future of the professional barista was doubted in 2005, so was the future for print magazines. Many of the big-name, established brands like Time and Newsweek were struggling and others were closing shop altogether. So how is it that Barista Magazine has not only survived but continues to thrive?

We like to think our appeal is the same thing that draws people to specialty coffee: It fundamentally provides a different experience than the rush of daily digital life. “People read slower on paper and retain more of it. Plus, they tend to fantasize more, projecting themselves into the pictures,” says Scott McDonald, president of NOMOS Research. “It’s a leisurely activity compared to the more purpose-driven and distractible experience of navigating on screens.”

Rather than rely solely on print, however, we realized the need to respond to the in-the-moment demands of our progressive, trend-setting readership, so we launched Barista Mag Online in 2007. Our dedication to this platform has made Barista Mag Online one of the most well-read coffee websites on the planet, thanks to the robust team of editors and writers we have dedicated to packing it with trend stories, profiles, and up-to-the-minute event coverage.

The proof is in our social media numbers: With many thousands more Instagram followers than any other coffee publication—online or print—we prioritize serving our readers wherever they are: Flipping through the pages of the print magazine after the morning rush; reading the original, daily content at Barista Mag Online during a break; or browsing our Instagram as we post numerous times every single day.

Without a doubt the past 15 years have been an amazing and inspirational adventure, and we have a hunch 2020 and beyond will be ever more exciting. We invite you to join us on our continuing journey and share our global reach with you and your business.

barista magazine is everywhereOur goal is to get Barista Magazine into the hands of as many coffee professionals as possible, and we reach tens of thousands of people through our distribution of free magazines at all the most pertinent coffee and allied product shows and conferences around the world.

But what about all the people who don’t go to the big events? How do we get the magazine into their hands?

In 2017, we launched our Community Event Support Program as a means of getting Barista Mag out to the farthest reaches of our industry. Here’s how it works: Any person planning an event—as small as a local throwdown, or as big as a city coffee festival—can fill out a simple form at Barista Mag online requesting magazines for their event. We not only send them boxes of magazines to give away to attendees, but we pack in Barista Mag swag, as well! Finally, we promote their events on our Instagram for no charge. It’s part of supporting the community, which has been our goal all along.

The Community Event Support Program has been an exceptional success: We now send boxes of magazines to around 40 events every month throughout the United States and the world. People who have never known there was a larger coffee community out there are excited and feeling served for the first time—the spike in our subscription numbers proves it.

For advertisers, the benefits are immense. Now our magazines—and your ads—are being put in front of a previously underserved market of thousands of coffee professionals.

We pride ourselves at Barista Magazine not only for the outstanding quality of our print magazine but excellence through all of our media channels. At our website, Barista Mag Online, we publish new content every day, drawing tens of thousands of readers monthly.

Since it’s debut in 2007, Barista Mag Online has been a go-to stop for coffee professionals looking for the latest news, event coverage, interviews, and more. Helmed by Online Editor, Katrina Yentch, and supported by veteran coffee journalist, Chris Ryan, who serves as Barista Magazine’s Managing Copy Editor as well as Online Copy Editor, Barista Mag Online keeps our readers connected and engaged every day.

Our readers are mobile, so we have to be, too. That’s why in 2016, we launched the Barista Magazine app on all platforms: iTunes, GooglePlay, and the Amazon store. As with the E-pub, our app is 100% free to use. That’s right: Coffee professionals anywhere in the world are encouraged to download complete issues of Barista Magazine right to their mobile phones and tablets to read offline wherever and whenever they want.

There’s more: Every link is live, including urls on ads. With the touch of a finger, readers go from your ad directly to your website. If your ad includes a phone number, they can even call you straight from your ad.

In 2012, Barista Magazine became the first coffee magazine to offer its issues in their entirety online for anyone around the world to view. We call it the E-pub, and to this day, it’s the chief vehicle for coffee professionals to read our magazine no matter where they are.

Our advertisers get a special bonus with the E-pub, as well: Every link—including links in your advertisements—is live. That means as readers of the E-pub see your ad and want to know more, all they have to do is click on your ad, and they’ll be transported to your own webpage.

We know our readers are extremely active on social media, so that means we are, too. We just under 160,000 Instagram followers, we lead all coffee media on this fastest growing and most used of social media platforms. And as they have been from the start, our Twitter and Facebook accounts are among the most well-followed throughout the coffee industry.

We have found social media to be an invaluable way to reach out to and interact with our audience on a daily basis. In fact, Barista Magazine’s engagement with our social media followers is so strong, we are regularly sought for interviews about how to succeed in social media as a small business.

To augment our social media presence even more, we added a dedicated Social Media Content Coordinator to our team in 2019. A former barista himself, Mark Van Streefkerk brings a rich portfolio of experience in social media platform building to Barista Magazine.

Since 2008, Barista Magazine has been contracted exclusively by World Coffee Events and the World Barista Championship to produce the official event program for the annual global competition, which in 2019 drew more than 2 million viewers in person and online. Our WBC event program, which includes pertinent schedule details, profiles of every national champion, prize information, and more, is printed and distributed in the thousands throughout the enormous event for free to all attendees. What’s more, we post the program online so that those hundreds of thousands of people watching on the livestream can read the program—and see your ads.

Advertising space is available for the 2020 WBC Melbourne program—but space is extremely limited! Reserve your position soon.

Barista Magazine’’s online ad program is unique in that our ads never rotate— each advertiser owns the ad space 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on every page of Barista Magazine’s website, for the month you purchase the ad. Most websites change the ads every time you hit refresh, resulting in minimal exposure for your ad.

Our system means that we have fewer ads to sell, so the message behind your ad will get more exposure than ever. We offer banner ads (the boxes down the right side of every page), and one leaderboard (the horizontal bar at the top of the page), per month.
