“ M a y b e t h e e n d i n g s a r ebeginnings” – Helen Knott

The minute I read this phrase, I thoughtof all the things in my life that had ended,and I wondered each time how I wouldsurvive. Mother Earth uses the remainsof what has crumbled as a base for newlife to spring up.Sometimes it seems likeforever … but new growth doesemerge. This piece was inspired by aphoto I took of a gnarly old stump onthe shore of Moberly Lake.

Artist Statement:The Bank Series is a collection of hand-coloured, black and white photographicimages taken in the valley of a local riverthroughout the seasons and over manyyears of recurring visits. Over time, thephotographs revealed the changes theriver and its environs experienced; it'sevolution. I could see the history of theday, the year, even the eons writtenin animal tracks, slumping patterns ofregrown and striations in the riverbank.It is called The Bank Series because,while the images are indeed mainlyof the banks of the river, the namesuggests a place that holds valuables,which, for many reasons, the river valleycertainly is.

Artist Statement:My work investigates the nature ofmemory. For me, the cow skull is aphysical trigger that evokes memories ofmy childhood spent on a farm innortheastern BC. In this series, I havecreated multiple pieces from the sameskull used as a reference. “Bald Faced”investigates the tangibility of memory,the way a memory can become its ownsimplified and constructed entity that isa real, yet false, representation of theoriginal experience.

Artist Statement:earthwork v1, west of 6 reflects thecircumstance where our strongestconnection to the land is the work wedo.Here,onTreaty 8 territory,we are atour busiest when extracting oil and gasfrom underground. My personal workexperience on the land is mining clayfrom Saskatoon Creek northeast of myhome. In this piece, fired clay bears themark of my pickaxe and the lines oftension recorded during its extraction.The natural clay is framed andsupported by the weight of industry.

Artist Statement:This was taken in the Dawson Creekcommunity forest in early autumn.I havenever seen more colours in one littlebush, and it caught my eye instantly. Iwish more plants portrayed this varyingdegree of colour. This piece was anexcellent push in to the use of color forme.Very challenging. Believe it or not, Idid not embellish any of the colours andwas lucky enough to capture the naturalrainbow caught within this little wildrose bush.

Artist Statement:This piece is part of a larger series ofsculpture and mixed media that I havebeen working on for well over a decade.The work is my response to theenvironmenta l degradat ion andcommunity upheaval that I havewitnessed in my lifetime on the familyfarm.The relentless push of industry is asteady one. It eventually brings oncomplacency and a thicker skin. Alongwit this comes a forced considerationhof the existential.The most humane spotto euthanize a horse with a bullet is todraw an X from ear to eye.The nexus isthe spot just above the X. This is theplace to a peaceful end.The man leadsthe workhorse. The unattainable leadsthe man.
