“TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THROUGH SERVICE”

LIFE CAN BE SO DARN UNFAIR

Not long after Wamuran formed as a Club

(2017) we were asked for support for a family

that was experiencing a very hard time

dealing with the news that their thirteen year

old daughter had been diagnosed with cancer

in the form of Ewing’s Sarcoma, for the

second time.

Abi was initially diagnosed when she was

eight years old. This is hard enough to deal

with and accept, but it is all the domino

effects that this has as a family unit. The

inability for parents to work resulting in no

income into the household, long trips to the

hospital day after day, parking, petrol all

unexpected expenses that just keep piling up.

So as a Lions Club, we as part of the zone

collection, gave money towards buying a

special walker for Abi. She needed this walker

to be able to come home. There was money

for petrol and parking as well.

After long bouts of chemo over months they

received good news that there were no more

shadows.

Then to be told that the Ewing’s Sarcoma had

returned in September 2019. The family then

makes the daily trek down to Brisbane for

more chemo. As you can imagine those

expenses are mounting again, in addition the

family car needs repairs. Again, the

Wamuran Lions step in to help. The family

are very grateful, bringing Mum to tears.

Another long bout of chemo and hospital

visits with very promising results. With tests

coming back with no shadows, the doctors

were hoping to remove the Cath Port early in

June. Abi went for one more test before this

could happen with devastating results……the

cancer had returned to her lungs. The family

were told that all treatments have been

exhausted. Abi was to be placed into

palliative care for her remaining time.

Turning ‘Sweet 16’, this should be the most

perfect time in her life, a time spent with

family, friends and yes, boyfriends. A time

laughing and living life to the fullest. A time

to learn to drive….but no that is being taken

away.

Abi’s family are celebrating her 16th birthday

this weekend making as many memories as

they can in the short time that she has left.

Abi and her Dad will have Daddy daughter

dance, they will have food prepared by

professional chefs, they will spend time

talking, laughing…..loving one another.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Abi and

her family. Daniel and Cheryl Hegemann are

volunteering their time to pack up after the

celebrations….so the family can spend that

time with Abi. Thank you, Daniel and Cheryl.

“TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THROUGH SERVICE”

Lions of District Q3,

Let me preface this report by thanking District Governor Donna and her Cabinet for their

support through-out the year. I have enjoyed working with all of you. I must thank the

Clubs and members of the great District Q3. We, - you raised an enormous amount of

money this past year and far excelled the hopes and targets set by Donna, me and Lions

Clubs International Foundation.

Our District came up with US $ 52,164 which in anyone’s reckoning is bloody marvellous,

thank you. Thank you all for a fantastic effort.

Now is also the time to welcome our new Leaders, Lion David and Cheryl to lead us for

the next twelve months. I will fully support them and hope that they have an

extraordinary year and I know the rest of Q3 will also.

I have not received any new targets yet for DG David’s year, but it will be a hard slog with

the current situation. This is also the reason that I am not sending out letters to Clubs

asking for financial support because as President of my own Club, I know just how little

is coming into the Club. All I am saying is that if you have funds to disperse, Lions Clubs

International Foundation will be grateful and give you credits for your dollars that do not

expire.

I wish everyone a prosperous year and want you all to be safe as I think we have a long

hard road to follow before we are clear of this unpleasant mess we find our world battling

right now. COVID-19, Race Riots, Drugs, and International terrorism. It is all out there

and we as Lions are needed more than ever to keep a calm demeanour with our motto

“We Serve” as our banner and our Ethics and Purposes to guide us.

Until the next time, be well and be safe

Cheers Lion Bob Goldsworthy

BRISBANE BRIDGES

LIGHT UP FOR LIONS

Brisbane’s Story and Victoria Bridges were

illuminated by blue and yellow lights on

Sunday 7th June, to celebrate the 103rd

Anniversary of Lions Clubs International.

With over 1.4 million members globally,

Lions is the world’s largest service

organisation.

Since the first club was formed in Australia

over 70 years ago, Lions has grown

dramatically with over 1200 clubs and

26,000 members giving back through an

array of community-based programs and

initiatives.

There are more than forty-eight Clubs and

over 1100 Lions volunteers in the Brisbane

area, covered by Districts Q1 and Q3, who

go above and beyond every day to help

others and make a difference in their

community.

Q3 Lions gathered at Wilson Outlook

Reserve whilst Q1 Lions gathered in

Captain Burke Park, both venues providing

a great view of the Story Bridge in full

colour. Other Lions visited the Southbank

Parkland to view the Victoria Bridge

including the Brisbane sign – great show.

Channel 9 weather also used a picture of

the bridges illuminated as their backdrop.

The media release for the event spoke of the

dedication of Lions and their work in the

community.

“We are delighted to have the support of

Brisbane City Council to have the bridges

lighting up in blue and yellow for Lions this

weekend,” said Lion Rodd Chignell, District

Service Team.

“Lions are members of the community who

come together to help others and make the

community a better place to live. It’s been

a difficult couple of years for Australia but

through drought, bushfires and even

COVID-19 our local Lions volunteers have

been doing whatever they can to support

those in need,”

“We have seen many Lions Clubs reaching

out to those less fortunate in their

community and offering to purchase and

deliver essential goods. Other clubs may

not be in a position to offer assistance to the

community right now, but they are

determined to keep in touch to support one

another. This is one of the many benefits of

being a volunteer in a service organisation

like ours – you meet other likeminded

people who often also become your friends,”

The photographs tell the story.

We have a great story to tell and we need to

tell it more often and to more people.

Spread the words, Lions is there to work

with and help the community.

Use the message to invite others to

participate in our great work. A challenge

to Light you up.
