OI Endorsement Vote 2020
OI will be having an endorsement vote June 10-17, following the Endorsement Team’s presentation of candidate information to the membership.
Per the vote of the OI membership, OI will be using Ranked Choice Voting to determine the winners of our OI endorsement.
OI Endorsement Vote 2020Ranked Choice Voting Basics
OI Endorsement Vote 2020
Past OI voting:- pick-one-candidate voting method- super-majority (2/3) required to receive OI endorsement.
This year:- some races have several candidates- e.g. District 10, Denny Heck’s seat, currently has 19 candidates, several of whom may be considered progressive
- Likely that no one candidate will get 2/3 of OI members’ votes
Solution:- decided to adopt Ranked Choice Voting
Ranked Choice Voting Basics
OI Endorsement Vote 2020
Ranked choice voting:- in a given race, you rank all acceptable candidates in order of preference- in each race, vote for as many or few candidates as you like - e.g. if there are five candidates listed, you could rank all five, just the 2 or 3 that are acceptable, just 1 or even none- only vote for candidates you like!
Votes gets tallied:- a candidate must receive 51% of the vote to win, if none then- lowest vote getter’s votes are distributed to those voters’ second choice- and so on, until one candidate has 51%
To get the OI endorsement- it will not take a super-majority (2/3)- it is likely that OI will endorse a candidate in every race, however- a 50/50 vote is mathematically possible and would lead to no endorsement.
Ranked Choice Voting Basics
OI Endorsement Vote 2020
Opavote- which we have used for endorsement votes for the last two years and will
use again- is built to accommodate rank-choice voting, so it will not be a problem for
us to execute.
After the video John Hooper will moderate the Q/A session
