Rhodes Scholarships ndashEstablished in 1903

The oldest and most prestigious scholarships in the world

Each year nine Australian Rhodes Scholars are elected (over 100 worldwide)

The scholarships include one for each stateterritory and a further three from anywhere in the country known as ldquoAustralia-at-Large Scholarshipsrdquo

Applications for the 2021 Queensland Rhodes Scholarship open on 1 July 2020 and close on 11 September 2020

Apply in the state or territory in which you are completing or have completed your highest degree or in which you completed at least two years of secondary schooling

Two key parts to the application A curriculum vitae of no more than three A4 pages in length (12 pt) A personal statement ndash 1000 words only ndash which should be entirely

your own work

Five referees ndash three academic and two other

About the Scholarship

All University and College fees

The University application fee

A personal stipend (pound14700)

Private health insurance

One economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the scholarship and one economy flight back to the studentrsquos home country at the conclusion of the scholarship

The scholarship cannot be deferred and cannot be held with another scholarship

While at Oxford you will be expected to engaging with your fellow Scholars through the Rhodes Service and Leadership Program

Situated in the heart of the Mekong Delta Can Tho University provides unique access to one of the most flood prone areas in the world From July 2014 to December 2014 to coincide with the Southwest monsoon I will conduct research for an Honours Thesis

under the supervision of the School of Humanities

As an intern in the United States Congress during the period of deliberations for the Hurricane Sandy Relief Act I witnessed how reliant citizens are on their governments to provide solutions I also saw how quickly legislation can be passed in response to natural

disasters

and

Through my participation and experience at the G20 Youth Forum I gained an understanding of the barriers natural disasters create for economic development Australia has a longstanding commitment to active middle power diplomacy and our national experience

with successful disaster management represents an opportunity to lead our region in this field

and finally

Researching the resilience of one of the worldrsquos most disaster-affected regions will be of benefit to the rest of Asia and Australiarsquos relief efforts especially given the predicted outcomes of increasing natural disasters
