NAfME ALL-NATIONAL HONOR ENSEMBLES

Selected to perform in the 2020 All-National Honor Ensembles are 542 of the most musically talented high school students in the United States. With assistance from their music teachers and directors, these exceptional students have prepared challenging music that they will perform under the leadership of prominent conductors in this annual event.

Grateful acknowledgment is given to the parents, families, and friends of the selected students for their cooperation and support as they share in this joyful experience. Special acknowledgment is also given to the following individuals for their leadership, expertise, and assistance in organizing and presenting these concerts.

To our 2020 Sponsors and Partners:

NAfME acknowledges Jazz at Lincoln Center for their continued support of the All-National Jazz Ensemble. NAfME acknowledges Little Kids Rock for their support of the All-National Modern Band. NAfME would like to thank Conn-Selmer for their support hosting the virtual platform for all events and rehearsals. NAfME would like to thank the Mark Wood Music Foundation for providing content and resources for this year’s string students, and Harman for providing recording equipment for this year's Modern Band. NAfME is also appreciative of our concert production company, GPG Music (Our Virtual Ensemble) for their dedication to music education during the COVID-19 pandemic and for providing educators with a platform for sharing their concerts virtually.

Mary Claxton has spent her professional life at the joyful intersection of music performance, teaching, and advocacy. Her early passion for music led her to be involved with every musical ensemble possible—band, choir, jazz band, pit orchestra, and drumline, as well as informal experiences with various genres of pop bands. In the classroom, Claxton went on to teach nearly every one of those same ensembles and later was pulled particularly toward the Modern Band movement that emphasized the songwriting and student-centered aspects that have made music so meaningful to her throughout the years.

She joined the Little Kids Rock team full-time as the Colorado Director of Programs in 2017. She now works as Senior Developer of Curricular Programs, creating teacher certification pathways in addition to student resources.

Claxton has been a presenter and clinician for organizations such as the Association of Popular Music Education, the Modern Band Summit, the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Festival, and the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, the institution where she received her Bachelor of Music Education degree.

She continues to perform often on drums, vocals and ukulele, working hard to further her skills and continue the conversation with her community and students about the role music plays in reflecting and changing our world.

MARY CLAXTON Conductor, Modern Band

Tony Sauza taught secondary music in Los Angeles for eight years before joining the music education nonprofit Little Kids Rock. He is now the Senior Developer of Curricular Programs, where he supports teachers in developing their Modern Band programs across Southern California. Sauza received a bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology from UCLA while minoring in Chicana/o Studies. He then earned his California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music in 2010 and his master’s degree in Afro-Latin Music from California State University Los Angeles in 2012.

Sauza is a multi-instrumentalist and has been playing guitar for more than twenty years. He currently performs locally and nationally with his cumbia project, Viento Callejero, along with guest appearances and collaborations with international artists. He is an avid supporter of music from around the world, a firm believer in recreational music-making and music therapy, and has a deep passion for Afro-Caribbean music.

In over three decades as a music educator, Todd Stoll has taught young musicians at every level, from elementary school through college. His impact on public music education can be seen in his legacy at central Ohio’s Westerville City Schools where he served for 18 years as music teacher and for 10 years as music curriculum coordinator. He has also served as Ohio’s president of the International Association of Jazz Educators and the inaugural Chair of Jazz Events for the Ohio Music Education Association. His curriculum work has been implemented at public schools across Ohio and beyond, bringing jazz education to students who otherwise might not have received it.

An experienced performer, Duke Ellington expert, and jazz advocate, Stoll founded the Columbus Jazz Youth Orchestra (CJYO) in 1991 to give young people the chance to cultivate a love of jazz through performance. He served as the director until 2011. Under his direction, the CJYO released six CDs, participated in the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and toured Europe and South America. His students have achieved successes that have taken them to the Juilliard School, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic.

In 2011, Stoll became the Vice President of Education at Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) in New York City, which continues to afford him the opportunity to bring jazz education programs to thousands of people of all ages and socioeconomic levels. Since he joined the organization, JALC has produced more than 10,000 education events in the US and around the world. The innovative Essentially Ellington high school jazz band program has expanded during his tenure, providing nearly 200,000 free scores to 4,000 high schools in all 50 states and 46 countries, reaching more than 500,000 students.

Stoll holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from Miami University. He currently serves on the boards of the Jazz Education Network where he is President; the New York City chapter of Most Valuable Kids; and the National Association for Music Education Policy Roundtable.

Stafford, with the Hamilton-Clayton Jazz Orchestra, performed on Diana Krall’s GRAMMY nominated From this Moment On (2006). John Clayton invited Stafford to perform with the Clayton Brothers Quintet and Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Stafford is a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and they were awarded a GRAMMY in 2009 for Best Large Ensemble, Live at the Village Vanguard. Stafford can be heard on more than 130 albums, including his own BrotherLee Love, Celebrating Lee Morgan, which received a 47th Annual NAACP Image Award nomination. His most recent album, Family Feeling, is a BCM&D release.

Nobuyoshi Yasuda was appointed as Orchestra Director at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire in 1991, Music Director of the Chippewa Valley Symphony in 1993. He guest conducted orchestras such as the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, La Crosse Symphony and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. With the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, he has participated in the educational outreach project, “Arts across Minnesota” granted by the Minnesota State Arts Board, to have residency in a high school; he led a “side-by-side rehearsal” and gave a concert. Yasuda made his international conducting debut in Germany with Das Philharmonie Orchester des NDR–Hannover in May 2003. And in March 2004, he made his Japanese debut with the Osaka Philharmonic.

He has served as Acting Assistant Conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra and was Associate Conductor of the Grand Teton Music Festival. His performance of Milhaud’s Création du monde at the festival was broadcast on National Public Radio’s Performance Today in July 2001.

Yasuda’s contagious enthusiasm and dedication to education has made him an icon of music in Eau Claire and surrounding communities. His expertise and joyful approach to music that enable him to work successfully with the musicians of the Chippewa Valley Symphony, Grand Teton Music Festival, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra has allowed him to reach out to aspiring young musicians as well. He leads master classes and guest-conducts middle and high school orchestras and bands, as well as serves as a speaker at inspirational “career days” for young adults throughout the upper Midwest.

His reputation as an inspiring teacher and a conductor has led him to be invited as a conductor of the Wisconsin High School State Honors Orchestra, the Illinois All State High School Orchestra, the Alaska All State High School Orchestra, North Dakota All State High School Orchestra, and the Minnesota Middle Level State Honors Orchestra.

A native of Takarazuka, Japan, Yasuda’s music studies began on the violin at the age of three. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Soai University in Japan and a Master of Music from Indiana University, Bloomington. Yasuda has been an active violin soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Japan. His interest in conducting was sparked by his desire to find new ways to share his passion for music with people.
