March 2020
Dear RVMS Families,
As we wrap up the 3rd quarter of the 2019-2020 school year, I would like to thank you for your partnership. The first three quarters have been extremely successful! As you may know, the 4th quarter is very busy. Many important events occur during the 4th quarter, two of the most important are our annual state testing and 8th Grade Promotion. This is the time that our students show what they know on the state test. RVMS students will be taking the AzMERIT this April. The testing schedule is included in this edition of the Roadrunner. Please keep the testing schedule in mind when making appointments during the month of April. Thank you for you help!
AzMERIT Testing Information State testing is almost here. Once we return from the March break, we will begin reviewing the standards that have been taught throughout the year to best prepare our students for the assessment. Please read the attached letter that explains specifics about AzMERIT. The letter is full of good information.
Eighth Grade Promotion This is a heavily attended event and as you make plans for your 8th grader’s promotion, please know that space is limited and families will receive 4 tickets. Promotion will be held Thursday, May 21st beginning at 9:00 AM.
I hope you find the March break restful and relaxing. Looking forward to an excellent 4th quarter! Thank you again for your continued support and partnership!
Sincerely,
Cristela Cardenas Principal, RVMS

Rincon Vista Middle School AzM2 and Science AIMS Testing Schedule 2020
PRACTICE DATES: Mon. 3/23-Tues. 3/24 6th Writing sample test Wed. 3/25 7th Writing sample test Thurs. 3/26 8th Writing sample test Week of 3/30 - 4/3 8th AIMS Science sample test Week of 4/6 - 4/9 6th-8th ELA & MA sample tests TESTING DATES: Tuesday, March 31 6th Grade Writing test Tuesday, April 1 7th Grade Writing test Wednesday, April 2 8th Grade Writing test Wednesday, April 8 8th Science AIMS tests Mon. 4/13 - Thurs. 4/16 6th - 8th ELA & MA tests
Please refer to the state testing schedule below for AzM2 and Science AIMS and make any and all appointments for students outside of the testing window. Testing begins promptly after 8:00 AM each day, so it is imperative students are on time each day of testing. Once a test has begun for a student, if a student falls ill and must go home, or is signed out for the day, the student will not be allowed to return and complete that portion of the test. Makeups will be administered throughout the testing window for absences, as well as the week of April 20.
EARBUDS AND HEADPHONES NEEDED FOR TESTING Students need to bring their own earbuds or headphones during AzM2 practice and testing. Read-aloud is available for all sections of the test other than reading, and students also have audio sections that may be read to them as part of the testing. We have some headphones available on campus, for those who cannot provide them, but they are limited.
STUDENT AND FAMILY RESOURCES: You can find resources for families at https://azm2portal.org/ and click on Students and Families. Sample tests are also found on this website.
Important Roadrunner InformationRVMS DRESS CODE
As the weather gets warmer and students start dressing for spring, it seems a good time to review some basics of the RVMS Dress Code. We believe there are several valuable reasons for a dress code: It promotes self-respect; it helps maintain a safe and healthy learning environment; revealing clothing can distract other students and interfere with learning; some images and slogans can be offensive; and oversized or baggy clothing can conceal harmful objects or materials.
Within these bounds, students have full right to self-expression and a creative style. Here are some friendly reminders on some common “hot spots” and how to avoid them. ✴Shorts and skirts need to be a modest length, providing appropriate coverage when the student is standing, sitting or moving. ✴Shorts and pants need to be anchored at the waist,
and should not sag. ✴Tank tops and other sleeveless shirts must have
shoulder straps at least two inches wide. Off-the-shoulder shirts (think Flashdance) are coming back into style. These are allowed, as long as the undershirt has appropriate shoulder straps. Spaghetti straps are not allowed.
✴Stomachs, sides and backs should be covered. If a shirt is cinched, it should still cover all skin around the waist, or be worn with an undershirt.
✴Hats may only be worn outdoors, and should be worn facing forwards.
✴Cleavage should be covered and undergarments and straps should not be exposed. Racerback tops are not appropriate for school.
✴No images promoting or suggesting alcohol, drugs or sexual activity should be worn to school.
✴ Leggings or tights should be worn with appropriate shorts or skirts, or a tunic top of appropriate length.
Parents, please work with your students to ensure that they are making good choices with their school attire. Also, students may have grown over the winter months, and may need some new sizes or lengths as clothes get outgrown. Our intent with the dress code is to support a quality instructional learning environment for everyone, and with your help we can do just that. Thank you.
REMEDIATION HOURS Please take time this quarter to check with your child and his or her advisory teacher to determine if there are any remediation hours that need to be served either in after school remediation or the reteach classes. The after school remediation schedule can be found on our school website at: http://rvms.vail.k12.az.us/activities/tutoring/
INTERSESSION CLASSES We will be offering Intersession classes in reading and math during the first week of of the spring break, March 9-12, 2020 for students to makeup up hours for reading or math, under the recommendation of the classroom teacher. Parents will receive a call with pick up/drop off times or they can call 879-3209 for more information.
FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE Attention Parents of Students with Asthma ... If your student requires the use of an inhaler during school hours, please contact our Health Aide, Donna Carbajal. It is Governing Board Policy that no student carry an inhaler or any other type of medication with them at anytime without the written consent of their doctor AND parent. Ms. Carbajal can give you the information and forms needed for your child to have their inhaler with them on campus. The process is rather simple, but please remember that inhaler's are considered medication, and must be handled in a safe manner to protect our entire student body. Thank you for your cooperation.
