With tremendous gratitude to God for our past and with great hopes for our future, the Society of Jesus will observe the forthcoming year as an “Ignatian year,” marking the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius of Loyola from a worldly, swashbuckling courtier to a humble and holy companion of Christ in service of His Kingdom. The efforts to replicate this remarkable transformation of our founder are mirrored today in the long and demanding process called Jesuit formation.
This year the Midwest Province is blessed to have 18 young men studying at our novitiate in St. Paul, Minnesota; eight are first year novices, and 10 are in their second year. It will take more than a decade for these men to be educated, tested, and molded to become, in the beautiful prayer used at diaconate ordinations, “effective in action, gentle in ministry, constant in prayer.” As the Midwest Jesuits’ provincial assistant for formation, I feel richly blessed to accompany each Jesuit through this formative journey. What a grace to witness them evolving into “servants of Christ on mission!”
From the time they enter the Society as novices until they complete formation, the cost for forming a Jesuit reaches $525,000 each. I encourage you to join the Midwest Province Jesuits in praying for our men in formation, as well as supporting our formation program. Each of these Jesuits has opened his heart to God’s call and is ready to serve the Church wherever missioned by the provincial.
I am pleased to report that we have more than 80 Jesuits in formation this year, and I am grateful that, with your continued support, we will be able to meet them with the necessary resources. I thank you for your gifts to, and prayers for, the Midwest Province. Assuring you of our prayers as well.
Yours gratefully in Christ,
Fr. Charles V. Rodrigues, SJ Provincial Assistant for Formation

NOVICES | First Year
Midwest Jesuits in FormationNOVICES | Second Year
NOVITIATE: A man enters the Society of Jesus as a novice. Novices spend two years living in community while taking classes, making the thirty-day retreat of the Spiritual Exercises, and engaging in a variety of ministries. At the end of that time, they profess perpetual vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, as either a brother or a scholastic, the primary difference being that scholastics intend to go on for ordination to the priesthood while brothers do not.
FIRST STUDIES
FIRST STUDIES: After the novitiate, Jesuits move on to a three-year period of graduate coursework in philosophy and theology called first studies.
SPECIAL STUDIES
THEOLOGY: Following regency, Jesuit scholastics begin an intensive study of theology.
*BROTHERS IN FORMATION: Brothers undergo a slightly different yet equally rigorous formation than that of their scholastic counterparts.
TERTIANSHIP: A Jesuit completes his formation of prayer, guidance, and studies with tertianship, a period of preparation for final vows in the Society of Jesus.
ORDINATION: After theology, those Jesuits who are called to the priesthood are ordained.
REGENCY
THEOLOGY | First Year
THEOLOGY | Second Year THEOLOGY | Third Year
REGENCY: Upon completing first studies, Jesuits move to regency, in which the Jesuit works full-time for two or three years in a Jesuit apostolate and lives in an apostolic community.
THEOLOGY | Fourth Year THEOLOGY | Fifth Year
SPECIAL STUDIES: As part of his ongoing formation, a Jesuit may pursue advanced studies in a particular academic or professional field.
