After the War: A Textile Show and Tell

Allison Rainboth

All Levels

Wednesday, 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

#31801 - Lectures

The period following the Civil War from 1870-1920 brought many changes to American society. Great social movements such as suffrage and temperance swept the nation. America celebrated her 100th birthday, and pioneers settled the West. The era of the Gibson Girl and the end of the Victorian age produced more fabric choices than ever before. In this presentation, quilt historian Allison Rainboth will look at these events in the context of her collection of antique quilts and quilt tops and will share many examples of period fabrics. Supplies are not required for a lecture, although you may want to bring a pen and paper to take notes. Member: $12 Retail: $15

Barn Quilt Painting

Workshop: Create Quilty Décor

Katie Baker

All Levels

Friday, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Truman Room

#39524 - Creative Crafts

Join Katie Baker of Baker Nest to create your own barn quilt. Barn quilts were first seen across

America's rural landscape hundreds of years ago, but it wasn't until the early 2000s that we saw a

revival of this folk art with a grassroots movement that began in Ohio. Barn quilts are a quilt block

painted on wood and hung on barns that reflect the family's heritage and celebrate the women's role

in agriculture through the beautiful quilt blocks they created. Barn quilts can bring that history

directly into our homes and can be displayed proudly from a family room, a kitchen, or a backyard

gathering place. Katie will walk you through creating your own unique barn quilt on a wooden pallet

square! The class will offer several different patterns to choose from and many different paint colors

from Fusion Mineral Paint. Come relax and paint with your quilty friends!

Bethanne Nemesh

Intermediate, Advanced

Saturday, 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Jefferson Room

#36503 - Embroidery & Embellishment

Sometimes the difference between a show quilt and an award-winning show quilt is in the details. On

the judging floor, sometimes one point is all that separates a contestant from a winner. Bethanne will

share her unique finishing details in her quilts, which have been proven winners in shows across the

country. Students will focus on skill mastery using Bethanne’s original beaded piping in classic piping,

on the knife edges of quilts, and as tiny appliqué stems. Rather than complete a finished project,

#38527 - Quilting/Finishing-HOME MACHINE

When Stacy was making her quilt HONOLULU HURRICANES, she found a secret technique hidden in a Hawaiian appliqué block, like a pearl in an oyster. Just like the classic pearl, this technique is versatile enough to fit with many styles of quilts, not just Hawaiian. Join Stacy and learn how to join prequilted sections together on a standard home machine with ease. You will find some balance between a whacked and slashed quilt, finished in a day with a signature stitch from the local longarm quilter, and the never-finished quilt of your dreams sitting dusty in a hand-quilting frame. Breaking it down into manageable parts is the key! You’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish on your home machine with this brilliant technique. shadestextiles.co Member: $56 Retail: $70 (Plus Kit Fee) Supplies: A kit is required and includes: (8) squares - fabric in (4) colors, (4) squares - batting, additional instruction sheet, and handout. Lone Starburst II Quilt

Kimberly Einmo

Intermediate

Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

McKinley Room

#37102w - Piecing

Kimberly's most popular class, this one sells out fast wherever she teaches it, and the diamond

design possibilities are practically endless! Kimberly will teach you how to strip-piece and cut

diamond building blocks from strips using either her EZ Jelly Roll Ruler or her new Precision Precuts

Ruler, with no "Y" or set-in seams. You will design your own unique Lone Starburst variation quilt!

The first part of the class focuses on accurate and efficient cutting and piecing of the diamond units,

and the latter part of the class focuses on design elements and the almost limitless possibilities for

designing your own layout using your diamond units. The real magic comes from the fact that the

quilt is assembled with straight-set blocks, not diamond wedges or blocks on point. This is an eye-

Playing with the position and rotation of pieces within a block can totally change the look of a design.

Cut out the same block components twice and then arrange each set in different ways to create two

blocks. Once all the blocks are assembled in the quilt, the puzzle becomes finding the pairs of blocks

that are actually the same. Loaded with accuracy, and cutting and piecing tips, this class is the

#37503 - Piecing

The Starry Path is a sleek, dramatic, classic quilt block. With only 16 pieces per block and no set-in

seams, it is not hard to make; however, the unusual triangles make it a challenge to cut without acrylic

tools. Marti will teach you the secret to marking beautiful Starry Path blocks in this fun evening workshop.

Plan to cut and make three matching 12" stars for the table runner. Marti will also demonstrate how to

use the multi-size tools to cut 6" and 9" blocks. The class includes cutting and construction techniques for

the Zigzag STARRY PATH quilt shown.
