About us

IBO's three main fields of intervention are: International Cooperation: local development projects in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America (Peru,Ecuador, Tanzania, Ukraine, Romania), promoting an inclusive and equitable quality education. Global Citizenship Education and awareness raising activities for students and youngsters. STV, LMTV projects in Italy and abroad: workcamps, EVS, ESC and Civil Service projects, especially involvingyoung people, in order to make them an active and aware part of society. Mobility projects and inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. IBO Italy is member of the European network “IBO Internationale” and CCIVS and a partner of the Alliance ofEuropean Voluntary Service Organizations. It’s a partner of FOCSIV – Italian federation of NGOs. Itsheadquarter is located in Ferrara. IBO has solid experience in organizing activities with/for young people: since 1957, we promote short-termexperiences of volunteering and community service. The association is accredited for the selection, trainingand coordination of volunteers in Italy and abroad, for the management of international cooperationprojects and information campaigns. We believe that non-formal learning experiences are fundamental to sensitize the younger generations tomeet others, to encourage their personal, professional and educational development, to foster interculturalexchange.

IBO Italy is an NGO operating in Italy since 1957. Our mission is to promote the access to educationand learning as fundamental rights and opportunitiesfor the growth and wellbeing of the wholecommunity, and to involve young people involunteering and solidarity projects, to foster socialcommitment, participation and responsibility.

Participating in a workcamp with IBO Italy

... It is an opportunity to broaden your daily horizons.Workcamps are volunteering experiences that can include construction, restoration, social animation andnon-formal education activities, training for peace and human rights, assistance, environmental protectionand much more.Workcamps are experiences of community life, shared commitment and intercultural exchange. Through shared voluntary work, towards common objectives, volunteers will get to know each other, theywill  create international friendships, discover the local culture in depth,  go deep into unfair  and unequalsituations and the important choices of whom decided to stand against them.

Workcamps for everyone, but not for anyone

Workcamps are an opportunity to travel, combining humility and respect with the enthusiasm and curiosityto make yourself available for the common good. Participating in a workcamp means actively collaborating from the first to the last day of the project; live anintense experience of community life, together with volunteers from many different backgrounds; it meansbeing protagonists of the group's decisions, assuming one's responsibilities with awareness, acquiring newskills and discovering new places from an unusual perspective. Although the project takes place in an interesting location, the workcamp is not a tourist trip. If you wouldlike to visit cities and tourist destinations in the area, we invite you to do it before or after the camp: duringthe project, give priority to group sharing and also to informal moments of intercultural exchange.

Age limitsAdult camps: 18+ years oldTeen camps: 14-17 y.o. or 16-17 y.o. Camp languageEnglish is the camp language in all our camps. It is important that volunteers speak at least basic English. Camp LeadersOur teen camps usually have two camp leaders who will live together with the group of volunteers, coordinate activities and support the organisation of free time. We do not guarantee the presence of campleaders in the adults projects: a local responsible is always present; and, when possible, a camp leader cansupport. AccommodationAccommodations will usually be in schools, youth centers, hosting communities and families, guesthouses, hostels. The conditions are sometimes basic but all facilities like kitchen, toilets and showers are available. FoodIn most workcamps, meals are prepared and self-organised by volunteers and camp leaders. Everyone willparticipate in cooking and preparing. Special needsWe are committed to support the participation of people with fewer opportunities at our projects: pleasecontact us for all the necessary info, in order to ease the participation of volunteers with economicdifficulties, disabilities and other specific needs. InsuranceInsurance is not provided for non IBO volunteers, therefore volunteers have to bring their own insuranceagainst illness, accident and third party risk.

TEEN Workcamps

Half of teenage camps participants are Italian. Volunteers in teenage workcamps will be charged of 120 € extra fee to cover the costs of qualified campleaders. We recommend that each volunteer’s family or tutor pays by bank transfer before the camp start. Anydifferent agreement may be found on a bilateral level. Teenagers are taken in charge on their arrival at the meeting point and they can’t leave the camp withouta written authorisation signed by their parents and sent to IBO. We cannot host teenagers without the Medical fact sheet and the Parental Authorization. As all volunteers taking part in our workcamps, teens are asked to be volunteers too. We are expectingfrom all volunteers, and from teenagers too, a good commitment to participate at the workcamp and atgroup life tasks.

Lately it has had different usages and has been left in decay. Villa Olanda is a big manor with a wide park, itspotential has remained unexploited for a long time. The Synod Commission for Diaconia Valdese is workingto give this manor back to the local territory making it a meeting, educational and training place. Now, it hosts several activities: a local radio, “Radio Beckwith”, a hosting centre for refugees and a meetingcentre for local youngsters, where international programs are organized, to put the rural people in touchwith different cultures. The Synod Commission for Diaconia Valdese supports youth mobility, international exchanges andinternational volunteer service to promote an inclusive multicultural society.Volunteer work has always been a milestone for our association and considered by young people as anexperience of growth and non formal learning. This considered, the Synod Commission for Diaconia Valdese wants to organize a workcamp supported byIBO: a group of 12 volunteers from all over the world will take part in a 7-days workcamp, together with 12volunteers from Diaconia Valdese and IBO Italia. This project wants to offer to the youngsters an opportunity in an important growth phase, during which, thanks to a positive and constructing dialogue, they build their own goodwill and sense of respect forothers. The internationality of the camp is a really important experience that will help grow the awareness of one’suniqueness while considering differences as a richness.

The volunteers will be engaged in activities offering them the opportunity to work in a tight-knit group. Theywill be able to develop their initiative. The work aims at keeping the place in order and improving it, to makeit more homely for the local people. The activities proposed are both creative and maintenance work:- maintenance and embellishment of areas out of the manor park, creating green areas, flower beds, aromatic herb gardens and work in the orchard;- creative activities handicrafts like silk screen on t-shirts or production of pins with the association logo andothers;- preparation of the meals and cleaning of the common areas in the hostel. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Association “Ali del Vento” (Wind Wings) works in the field of horseback riding both with lessons in theriding school and with walks outside. Its activity has also a strong social value in the exercise of Assisted Interventions with Animals (IAA) in favourof disabled people, based on the vision of a man-horse ethical perspective and on the ethological approach, not based on the exploitation of the animal but on its respect and wellbeing as fundamental elements. All the horses of the school, in fact, have special stories and bad experiences left behind. The recoveredwellbeing of these horses is a wonderful combination with the happiness of children, disabled or not, whocan enjoy the relationship with these beautiful animals. Among the objectives there is also the developmentof horseback riding for all (including adults) at low cost, so that it can be a sport for everyone and not aluxury.THE PHILOSOPHY OF “ALI DEL VENTO”In the collective imagination the horse is a symbol of freedom and strength, there are many opportunities toexperience this in different ways: racing, competing (show jumping, dressage, western disciplines), riding andmuch more. Often the binomial man-horse does not last forever, with unpleasant results for the animal. Ali del vento is firmly convinced that the horse is not a mere tool to achieve ambitions and desires, but thehorse is a friend and A FRIEND IS FOREVER.The riding taught in the association is based mainly on the relationship with the horse, and learning to relatewith such a wonderful animal leads to great results... the horse brings you wings that you did not even thinkyou could have... the WIND WINGS.The Centre has: a covered riding stable with sand ground; a stable composed of 14 boxes with covered lane;covered rod; open field of 30 x 40 meters/large paddock; 7 paddocks.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project is in collaboration with the cultural association “Tu Quoque” born in 2013 in Vernazza, Liguria. The association works for the land and the typical landscape conservation of the “Cinque Terre”, taking careof them with the traditional knowledge of the local culture. In the last years, in particural since 2011, the Cinque Terre were swept away by landslides and floods; theheavy rains caused big damages to the houses and the terraced agricultural grounds, tipically cultivated invineyards and sustained by dry stone walls. Different farmers abandoned the care of the grounds and thevineyards. Some of these grounds have been given by the owners to the association "Tu Quoque" topreserve the agricultural and historical heritage of the territory. The project therefore foresees thereconstruction of dry stone walls of such grounds.

The volunteers will collaborate with local masters of dry stone construction, to clear and sort the materials.Once they will have learnt the process, they can be involved in the positioning of the stones for theconstruction of the dry walls and the preservation of the cultures from abandonement.Working hours depend also on weather conditions, but they approximately are 6.00-12.00; 17.00-19.00. IBOIT13MANU/CONSLocation: Boccioleto – Vercelli – PiemonteDates: 11/07 - 25/07N° volunteers: 3IT+7 int.Age: 18+

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project was born from the collaboration between IBO Italia, the Municipality of Boccioleto and LaSermenza Association. The association “La Sermenza”, established in 2018 but informally started in 2015, takes its name from alarge tributary torrent of Sesia river that crosses Val Sermenza, one of the three valleys that make up theValsesia. The association aims at contributing in the protection of the landscape, by enhancing the centuries-old mountain constructions, through dry masonry and carpentry courses, according to the traditionaltechniques of this valley. In fact, the attention in Valsesia is mainly focused on the wonderful Walser constructions, a cultural heritagemonument and Valsesian symbol; but not enough care is taken on the widespread minor building heritage, whose characteristic are the suggestive stone roofs (beola or piode), which constitute its identity andintegrity. The workcamp project planned for 2020, specifically, involves the recovery of three small dry stone artifacts:a soaking tank, a wash-house and a deposit for processing hemp. In particular, the main work is related tothe reconstruction of the two small roofs of the deposit and the wash-house; to the restoration of the dry-stone walls on the side of the wash-house, and to those of the tank for maceration. The restoration of theartifacts will be completed with the application of a plaster in lime.A didactic panel will be built to inform the citizens of the work carried out: it will explain the ancientprocessing of hemp and its modern use in various fields, including the green building sector.

Carpentry, dry masonry works, including the rebuilding of the dry stone roof of the wash-house and thedeposit. Restoration of the lime-based plaster. Volunteers will be guided by local artisans, who will take turns during the week, by professionals such asarchitects and surveyors and by the project coordinator. This project can be very meaningful for architecture students. The work place is situated 3 km far from Boccioleto, precisely in Fervento. Local volunteers will accompanyIBO volunteers to the construction site, with municipal vehicles.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project was born thanks to the collaboration with the religious congregation “Sisters Servants of DivineProvidence”, founded in Catania (Sicily) in 1921. Along nearly a century, the service carried out by this smallreligious family has brought to many results, of healthy growth for many children and young people wholive difficulties related to the family of origin. The objective of the workcamp is to complete the construction of a nature trail made of wooden toys, inorder to equip an area of an ancient abandoned farm as a playground for children and adults. We will carryon with the reconstruction of paths and walls that are falling down, of benches and tables to be arrangedunder the oaks, to offer some relaxing areas to the guests. We will place in the soil some berries plants, so that the guests that will live in the farm will be able totransform the fruits themselves. Our aim is to create a social farm, that in the future could accomodate a residential community of youngpeople at risk of exclusion, or who feels the need for a social recovery. In the farm, through the rural workexperience, personalized paths, they will gradually experience a restoration of their dignity and hope for abetter future. This workcamp will hopefully pave the way for more projects that aim to restructure some parts of the oldfarm, such as the winery and other structures, half-destroyed by different upheavals of vulcanic nature.

General work for the renovation of walls, fences and nature trails.Volunteers will also be involved in preparing meals and cleaning common areas. Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday, from 8 am till 4 pm.On Saturday and Sunday they will be free to organize their free time. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Overseas is a non-profit organization and NGO established in Spilamberto (Modena) in 1971 to promoteglobal development through volunteering and international cooperation, support for local grassrootsorganizations and groups, solidarity for children and young people in need.Overseas has always given great importance to sober lifestyles, to solidarity "without borders" and to recycleand reuse, starting from the construction of its headquarter. The workcamp is an important step in the redevelopment process of the association's headquarter, and inparticular of the "historic" building, consisting of a shed of about 500 square meters, which in the 80s wasused for agricultural use (storage of tools and animals) and now for the storage of goods donated for reuseand recycling. The shed is located next to "Casa Overseas", the operational headquarter and residence of the Association, where the volunteers will be hosted. Around the two buildings there is a large green area, used as aneducational-experimental field, with a garden, a vegetable garden and an arboretum of traditional varieties. The project consists in the reorganization of the spaces and activities, in particular of the two Atelier“Progetto Dono” and “Arte del Riuso”; and in the enrichment of the structures of the external area, in orderto give a characteristic feature to the whole complex, which should inspire community and conviviality.
