PYRAMID APPROACh TO EDUCATION®

The Pyramid Approach to Education is a comprehensive framework for establishing and supporting effective learning environments. Designed by Andy Bondy, PhD, and based on the principles of functional applied behavior analysis (ABA), the Pyramid Approach offers a solid foundation for those who teach in education, work, home, or community settings. This unique model benefits individuals with developmental differences, autism, communication challenges, and/or other learning complications across all ages.

Maximizing learner outcomes requires not only information about what and how to teach – it requires a plan to put all the pieces together. The Pyramid Approach provides a clear guide for everyone on the team to determine what elements to address in a specific order. Just as building a pyramid begins with establishing a firm foundation before constructing the body of the building, the Pyramid Approach begins with a strong foundation, relying on a science-based approach to teaching.

PICTURE EXChANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM® (PECS®)

PECS is a unique alternative/augmentative communication system developed in 1985 by Andy Bondy, PhD, and Lori Frost, MS, CCC-SLP and was first implemented with pre-school students diagnosed with autism at the Delaware Autism Program. Since then, PECS has successfully been implemented worldwide with thousands of learners of all ages who have various cognitive, physical, and communication challenges.

PECS consists of six phases and begins by teaching an individual to give a single picture of a desired item or action to a “communicative partner” who immediately honors the exchange as a request. The system goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences. In the more advanced phases, individuals are taught to use modifiers, answer questions, and comment.

The primary goal of PECS is to teach functional communication. Research has shown that some learners using PECS also develop speech. Others may transition to a speech generating device (SGD). The body of research supporting the effectiveness of PECS as an evidence-based practice is substantial and continues to expand, with over 160 research articles from all over the world.

According to pediatric guidelines, regarding autism interventions published in PEDIATRICS: The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, individuals with autism “who have limited verbal language, or those who do not respond to multiple interventions aimed at improving communication, should be offered the opportunity to use PECS.” Further, a Technical Expert Panel consisting of practicioners, researchers, and parents concluded that PECS is one of only a handful of interventions that have shown efficacy in the treatment of autism (Maglione, Gans, Das, Timbie, Kasari and HRSA Autism Intervention Research, 2012).

TRANSITIONING FROM PECS® TO SPEECh GENERATING DEVICES (SGDS) 1 Day • 6 Contact hours • 0.6 AShA CEUs (Intermediate level, Language Disorder area) • 6.0 bACb CEUs

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS®) is an evidence-based protocol that teaches vital communication skills such as initiation, persistence in relaying messages, picture discrimination and basic sentence structure. After mastery of these skills, the learner likely has a large repertoire of pictures in the communication book. If the learner is not speaking, the team may need to explore a transition to a dedicated Speech Generating Device (SGD) or tablet with communication app that will accommodate larger vocabularies and allow for continued language development. To ensure the rapid transfer of existing communication skills, the transition will require the team to assess current PECS skills and then analyze features of various apps/SGDS to select a device that will best meet the learner’s needs. Following device selection, detailed

lesson plans are necessary to teach use of the new device as a functional communication system. This workshop is appropriate for teams supporting learners who may be ready to transition from PECS to SGDs. It is also appropriate for teams working with learners who are not currently using their devices effectively. *Please bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) or a tablet with an AAC app to the training to use during a variety of activities.

This workshop will guide professionals, parents, caretakers, and teams in designing an effective program. Participants will leave this workshop with many new tools to add to their “teaching toolkit” and empowered with the knowledge of how to apply them in each individual situation.

What You Will Learn: ` Identify the 9 components of The Pyramid Approach `Describe conditions under which a behavior occurs `Evaluate whether or not lessons and/or materials are functional `Name and practice key elements of effective reinforcement systems `List at least 4 different lessons that could be taught using a single object/event

`Create a lesson plan that contains all components of the Pyramid Approach

GUIDE TO MANAGING ChALLENGING bEhAVIORS1 Day • 6.5 Contact hours • 0.65 AShA CEUs (Introductory level, Professional area) • 6.5 bACb CEUs

This unique training offers strategies for navigating behavior challenges with learners of all ages, in any environment. Beginning with key concepts of applied behavior analysis, we focus on the conditions under which behavior occurs. We discuss the importance of designing supportive learning environments that address skill deficits prior to or while simultaneously addressing unwanted contextually inappropriate behaviors. Through discussions, video examples and hands-on activities you will identify and define unwanted behaviors, analyze why the behavior is occurring, determine alternative skills to replace unwanted behaviors, review differential reinforcement procedures, and discuss proactive strategies and reactive strategies. The workshop concludes by showing how you and your team can evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of your behavior plans as you put your new strategies into practice.

What You Will Learn: ` Identify and operationally define behaviors requiring intervention `Develop behavior plans `Conduct a functional assessment `Select and teach functionally equivalent alternative behaviors and skills to replace

unwanted behaviors ` Identify antecedent and consequence-based strategies for reducing unwanted behavior `Assess and maintain the efficacy of behavior intervention plans

ThE LANGUAGE OF EMOTIONS 1 Day • 6.5 Contact hours • 0.65 AShA CEUs (Introductory level, Professional area) • 6.5 bACb CEUs

B.F. Skinner provided an important guide to the analysis of language in his book, Verbal Behavior. In this book, he stresses the critical value of focusing on the function of various aspects of communication. His analysis includes a very interesting section on what he termed "private events." That is, how do we learn to talk about things that happen inside of us? In this workshop, we will review traditional approaches to teaching children with autism to communicate about their emotions as well as respond to such language from other people. Participants will be asked to consider how they currently teach various lessons related to emotions and then to plan to incorporate Skinner’s analysis into the design of effective lessons. These lessons may involve very young children or teenagers and adults who continue to have difficulty with this topic. We also will look at a very important part of language that helps communicative partners better understand the perspective of someone who is attempting to communicate. We will review why this area is so difficult for those with autism and suggest teaching strategies that may lead to successful acquisition of these complex language skills.

What You Will Learn: `To describe how children typically learn to comment about "private events." `The type of information adults respond to when teaching children to tell us about their

emotions, and what may be missing for children with autism. `Why traditional approaches to teaching "the language of emotions" may not be effective

and how they can be improved. `How to both take advantage of existing emotional displays and how to create situations

that are likely to induce such feelings. `Why it is not really easy to teach "really."
