Rationale behind this plan

• The SPN Reopening Plan is meant to provide guidance for, explanation of, and parameters for operating in the upcoming school year in a variety of scenarios. A multitude of logistical issues are covered. It is the desire of the school, and the expectation of the Office of Catholic Schools, that SPN will be in session during normal hours and days during this school year. This plan includes contingencies should the COVID-19 situation requires changes to school operation.

How this plan was developed

• Guidance, discussion, and collaboration with the Office of Catholic Schools, the Louisiana Department of Education, and other Principals in the Archdiocese.

• Review of guidelines, requirements, and recommendations provided by Office of Public Health, American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control, Louisiana Department of Education, and the Office of Catholic Schools.

• Formal and informal discussions with teachers individually and in differently sized groups.

• Consultation with a “COVID Consideration Committee” established by the school. Members included faculty members and current parents as well as school administration.

• The SPN Reopening Plan has been reviewed by the BRACE program through Tulane Medical School. BRACE provided further guidance and consultation concerning the plan.

• All recommendations for reopening will: take a “common sense” approach, put student and faculty health and safety first, be clearly communicated to all stakeholders, seek to ensure the flow of education, and provide as much routine and normalcy for students as possible.

Glossary of terms used in this plan (Page 1 of 2)

• Enrichment- Non-core classes at SPN (PE, Library, Computer, Music, Spanish, Art, Drama)

• Horizontal alignment- Assuring that assessments meet the skills, concepts, and knowledge being taught. Ensuring that key abstract concepts are a part of all subject areas within the grade level.

• Hybrid Learning Scenario- A combination of in-person and virtual learning. This may be necessary for a student who is quarantined and cannot physically attend school.

• INC- Individual Needs Committee. The members of the school faculty that review student evaluations and put minor educational adjustments in place for those students.

• LDOE – Louisiana Department of Education.

• Pods- Essentially a homeroom that stays together for the entire school day and does not mix or interact with another homeroom.

• SPN Distance Learning Plan- The plan established by the school for use if school closes due to a public health emergency. This plan was formed based on lessons learned during the closure at the end of the 2019-2020 year.

• Traditional Learning Scenario- Students attending the “brick and mortar” school during normal operating hours and learning in-person in the most routine way possible.

• USCCB- United States Council of Catholic Bishops

• Vertical alignment- Ensuring that what students learn in one grade level prepares them for, and leads them to what they will learn in the next. The attempt to identify and address “gaps” in learning of key skills, concepts, and knowledge from year to year.

• Virtual Learning Scenario- A completely virtual learning environment accomplished almost exclusively through the use of technology. This scenario would go into effect if the school has to physically for any reason, including close due to civil government mandate or public health emergency. Even when the school buildings are closed, learning opportunities are offered and student growth continues in this scenario.

Morning Arrival

This side of the parking lot is for parking and

walking PK students to class through Gate 3. Gate

3 will open at 8:00.

You can either arrive from the entrance on

Kawanee nearest Building 1 or from Olympic and

use the one way “cut-through”. Depart by using the

exit on Kawanee nearest Church and turn RIGHT.

Students in K-7 cannot be walked to class. If you

have a student in PK as well as students in Grades K-

7, you may walk them all to Gate 3. From there, you

may walk the PK student to class. K-7 students will

be directed through a side gate, to the whitetop

and, from there, to their homerooms.

Afternoon Dismissal 2020-2021: How does it work?

PK3 and PK4 students with no older siblings

• Park in the lot between the school and the Church.

• Get out of your vehicle and stand at the appropriate gate.

• Wear a mask and socially distance yourself from others who are picking up

students.

• At 3:15:

• PK3 and PK4 students who are designated to go to aftercare will be brought to

the Assembly Hall.

• At 3:20:

• PK3 students are dismissed at Gate 3

• PK4 students are dismissed at Gate 4

• At 3:30:

• Remaining students brought to the Assembly Hall.

• Siblings of older K-7 students brought to Assembly Hall to be picked up by the

older siblings for the main 3:30 dismissal.

• In the case of rain at dismissal, Gates 2 and 3 will be open, parents will pick up from

classrooms. Masks are required for those picking up. Please socially distance and

leave campus as soon as you have picked up your child.

Afternoon Dismissal 2020-2021: How does it work?

K-7 students and PK3/PK4 with older siblings

• No one will exit their vehicles during the 3:30 dismissal.

• Please have a sign in your windshield that clearly indicates the names of all students you are picking

up.

• Enter the “back” parking lot (between the Church and the ELC/Parishioners’ Center) from Olympic

Drive.

• You will be funneled into the middle lane of the parking lot. Once in the middle lane, you will be

directed into two rows. The first vehicle will be placed into the right row. The second vehicle will be

placed into the left row. The rows will continue to be filled in this fashion.

• As you approach the whitetop, the teacher on duty will let one vehicle proceed at a time, starting

with the right lane, then the left, in alternating order. Please only pull forward when directed.

• Drive up the ramp onto the whitetop.

• Pull all the way forward, as indicated by teachers on duty. Your students will be loaded into your

vehicle.

• Students will be waiting, grouped alphabetically by last name. PK3 and PK4 siblings will be picked up

by older students before heading out to the whitetop. Families with children in grades K-7 will meet

their siblings on the whitetop in their appropriate “last name” spaces.

• Exit the whitetop as indicated on the map. Proceed to the far right lane of the main Church parking

lot toward Kawanee. Exit to Kawanee and turn right.

• If you need to buckle your students in, allow teachers to load them into your vehicle, exit the

whitetop, and proceed to the lane that runs under the Porte Cochere. Park and buckle your students

in. Once students are secure, exit the Porte Cochere lane and rejoin the exiting vehicles.

Operational Considerations and Modifications

Screening

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 Grades 5, 6, 7

• Students will be screened by teacher (or assistant) at door of

classroom before entering.

• Students who register fever of 100.4 or higher will be sent to office

and quarantined. These students will be rechecked in 15 minutes. If

fever persists, student will be sent home.

• Students must be fever, vomit and diarrhea free without aid of

medication for 48 hours before returning to school.

Faculty: Faculty members will have temperature check upon arrival in school office before

signing in. Protocols for fever and illness that are in place for students apply to faculty

members as well.

Food Services

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1-7

• School Food Service will still

provide lunch and staffing.

• Students will still be allowed to

bring lunch.

• In PK4, K- each homeroom will

alternate lunch location

weekly among three

possibilities: Assembly Hall,

classroom, outdoors.

• All water fountains on campus

are currently being replaced

with touchless water-filling

stations. All students and

faculty members must bring a

water bottle to campus each

day.

• School Food Service will still provide lunch and

staffing.

• Students will still be allowed to bring lunch.

• Each homeroom will alternate lunch location weekly

among three possibilities: Assembly Hall, classroom,

outdoors. Assembly Hall will divided in half with

cubicles to create two useable physical spaces.

• All water fountains on campus are currently being

replaced with touchless water-filling stations or are

being converted to be touchless. All students and

faculty members must bring a water bottle to campus

each day.

All Grades- Students will be allowed to bring a snack daily for themselves. No

“shared”/“class” snacks or birthday snacks/treats will be permitted at this time.

Extended Care

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 Grades 5, 6, 7

• Before Care:

• Continues to operate during normal hours (7:00 AM-8:00 AM).

• All students will be temperature checked before entering before care.

• Parents buzz students in at Gate 4. Parents of PK students walk them in at Gate 4. Parents must wear masks.

• Students in Grades 1-7 must wear a mask to enter.

• Students will be housed in the Assembly Hall, socially distanced, divided by homeroom and grade level, to the

maximum extent possible. Assembly Hall divided with partitions into two usable spaces.

• At 8:00, students in Grades K-7 will be sent to their homerooms. PK students must be picked up from the

Assembly Hall by the classroom teacher or assistant.

• After Care:

• Continues to operate during normal hours (3:45 PM-6:00 PM).

• All students will be temperature checked before entering aftercare.

• Parents will be buzzed through Gate 4 to pick up students. Parents must wear masks.

• Students will be housed in the Assembly Hall initially, socially distanced, divided by homeroom and grade level, to

the maximum extent possible. Assembly Hall divided with partitions into two usable spaces.

• Different aftercare groups will utilize different areas of campus for outdoor play during aftercare while

maintaining as much social distance between students as possible.

Please note: Use of extended care could present additional risks as static groups of students will be

different than their classroom groups/”pods” that are in place during the school day. If possible, we do

encourage that our families use options other than extended care this school year.

Sanitation and Supplies

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 Grades 5, 6, 7

• Proper cleaning and sanitizing supplies have been obtained through

our usual vendors.

• A master list of supplies needed was created after review of various

governmental and organizational recommendations and guidelines.

• Cleaning supplies will be utilized by all staff regularly throughout the

day.

• Hand sanitizing will be available across campus in every classroom

and usable space.

• School maintenance staff will clean/sanitize Building 1 each evening.

Outside cleaning contractor will clean/sanitize Buildings 2 and 3 each

evening.

Procedure for Positive Cases, Exposure, Illness

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 Grades 5, 6, 7

● All student illnesses will continue to be reported to the school through the school Office

Manager.

● Once the school is notified of an exposure all affected parties will be notified.

○ Regional Medical Director/Office of Public Health

○ Office of Catholic Schools

● All faculty members need to report a positive case of COVID-19 directly to the principal.

● Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 must not return to school until determined to

be non-infectious by their doctor.

● Determinations regarding the possibility of shutting down a class or moving the school

to remote learning for a time will be made upon guidance and consultation from the

Office of Public Health. Details from the Louisiana Department of Education follow this

page.

● A positive case of COVID-19 does not necessarily warrant classroom or school closure.

Operational Considerations and Modifications

Responding to Positive COVID-19 Cases (from LDOE)

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 Grades 5, 6, 7

***St. Philip Neri School will adhere to and abide by the guidelines provided by the Louisiana Department of

Education in regards to positive COVID-19 cases on our campus:

1. If a school becomes aware of a presumptive positive case of COVID-19, the child must not attend school

until determined to be non-infectious by their doctor.

2. Parents will be notified by SPN and may be notified by the Office of Public Health if their child may have

been exposed to the case of COVID-19, along with any next steps.

3. If it is determined that a school was the focus of infection of COVID-19, the school superintendent, in

consultation with the Office of Public Health, will determine if the school should remain open or should

close for a period of time. A positive case of COVID-19 does not necessarily warrant classroom or school

closure.

Onboarding and Orienting

PK3, PK4, Kindergarten Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 Grades 5, 6, 7

In-person orientation nights will take place during the beginning of the school year

for each grade level and Middle School will adjustments in place:

• Each grade level has their own time.

• Only 1 parent/guardian will be allowed on behalf of each student.

• Students are not allowed to attend.

• All attending must wear a mask/face covering.

• All materials to be shared/handed out at orientation will be sent home with

students before the end of the first week of school.

“Meet the Teacher” will take place according to a schedule that limits the number

of visitors on campus and on each floor of each building during scheduled window

of time. All visitors will wear masks/face coverings.

Viking Shop will not be open on orientation nights, but will be open during “Meet

the Teacher”. The Viking Shop has also been open during the two pre-packaged

school supply/Viking Shop order pickup days.

• The school administration updates handbooks, contracts, policies and

procedures on a yearly basis in preparing for the start of a new school

year. Notes are kept from observations, meetings, and information

gathered throughout the prior school year to attempt to create

common sense protocols that are in the best interest of the students

and faculty while abiding by and working to actualize the school’s

mission.

• All school documentation, as well as all school protocols, policies, and

procedures can be reviewed, and are reviewed, on a case-by-case

basis when circumstances change or the need arises for review.
