As we prepare to conclude the 2019-2020 academic year, there’s no question that Curry College is a college on the move.

In a challenging and competitive environment for small private colleges, our commitment to strategic planning, strong financial resources, and the concerted efforts of all members of the Curry College community to fulfill our mission for student success have ensured that we continued to grow and flourish.

We offer this update on the latest at Curry College: Our continued investment in providing a rich academic environment where students can thrive, with state-of-the-art resources and exciting new programs; our new partnerships and expanded learning opportunities; and the many significant accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff and alumni, in which our entire community takes pride.

Together, we will continue to build on Curry’s legacy of success and ensure our bright future in 2020 and beyond.

THE LEARNING COMMONS

The New Learning Commons featuring The Science and Research Center

At Curry, we strive to build not only a culture, but also a campus that supports our academic community.

On September 4, 2019, the new 36,500 square foot Curry College Learning Commons, featuring the state-of-the-art Science and Research Center, opened in its second phase. A facility designed to move our students and our College forward by providing the space and tools to facilitate our approach to teaching, learning and meaningful outcomes, the labs and science facilities take student experimentation and research to a new level. Along with the enhanced classroom environments and collaborative study spaces, the Learning Commons provides resources to advance new majors that attract and retain students. Importantly, our Advising, Academic Success and Student Support offices are now centralized in this spectacular facility in the center of the Academic Quad, positioned for maximum accessibility and impact on the learning experience.

This powerful new feature of the Curry campus is an embodiment of the College’s mission and strategic vision for the future.

SETH CORWIN ’20 As far back as he can remember, Seth Corwin has been devoted to the game of hockey. One of his earliest memories is a Christmas day skate with his father in an empty Dane County Coliseum in Wisconsin.

Now a fourth-year netminder for the Colonels, as well as a Business Management major with a concentration in Sport and Recreation Management (now offered at Curry for the first time as a full major), he can check the dream of being an elite-level hockey player off the list. His next goal: to be an agent for hockey players from high school to the professional ranks.

Seth was accepted into his top choice of law schools, the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, where he will enter the Sports Law program, propelling him one step closer to achieving his dream.

“I’ve learned so much in class about sport management, including collective bargaining, marketing, and various legal issues involved in the industry,” Seth says. What’s more, his internship with the Boston Management Group, an agency that represents elite hockey players, has provided critical real-world experience.

In many ways, Seth says, being an agent is really a “people” profession. “All day long you’re on the phone or meeting with people in person; negotiating, coaching, helping people achieve their goals.” That’s why his internship experience is such an invaluable part of his education. Among other things, he sits in on meetings with players, coaches, directors of player development, and other key stakeholders. “There is nothing like being in the room to gain the kind of experience you’ll need to make it in the business.”

JEFFREY CARSONSOCIOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICEWith intelligence and research roles with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense in his background, Dr. Jeffrey Carson has seen firsthand that more criminal justice professionals are needed to help address complex and sophisticated white-collar crimes such as fraud, cybercrime, and identity theft.

“Most institutions provide a cookie-cutter curriculum, and as a result, we do not have enough criminal justice programs that are producing knowledgeable graduates in the field of white-collar crime,” says Dr. Carson. “It can be a niche division in the industry, and even the professionals with backgrounds in criminal justice, accounting, or law have to learn as they go on the job.”

To help make Curry students more competitive in the market, Carson and his colleagues are leading the development of a new white-collar crime minor at the College, where students will be prepared to sit for certified fraud examination certification before certified fraud examiners prior to graduating, as well as the development of a new intelligence and research analysis concentration within the Master’s of Criminal Justice program.

Carson is adamant about integrating industry practice within his curriculum. “My approach to teaching is rooted in my work as a practitioner. All of the courses are designed to help students build new skills and market themselves to a potential employer or within their existing department.”

Following high school, Carson enlisted in the military and served at bases in Italy, Turkey, Africa, and Greece. He then studied political science and government at The Ohio State University. In addition to his roles in government, Carson also published research on the Obama foreign policy in Afghanistan during his time with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank founded at Georgetown University. Before joining Curry in 2019, Carson taught at Suffolk University and Boston College, and currently serves as an Assistant Professor at The U.S. Military Academy West Point.

Our commitment to our students starts with our faculty, who bring a wealth of real-world experience and diverse perspectives to the classrooms, studios and labs on campus.

“ We’re working on a combination of different evidentiary items that students would be exposed to at a crime scene in a forensics lab. Curry has been very open with my ideas, the requirements of the program, the future prospects of the program.James Jabbour Assistant Professor, Forensic Science

At Curry, we recognize that students develop as writers over time with regular and individualized feedback. That means that we keep our writing classes small to offer plenty of opportunities for students to receive thoughtful, one-on-one feedback, and it also means that we integrate writing into courses throughout the curriculum to support that growth.Lindsay Illich Professor, Writing Program

My classes are very interactive. I want everyone to come together, ask questions, and discuss ideas. With the small class sizes at Curry, I have the time to invest in each and every student. I feel like I am making a difference, and that means a lot to me.Shavindrie Cooray Associate Professor, Business Management

COURTNEY LEE ’17 Courtney Lee is making it happen. But when she started at Curry, she wasn’t even sure what “it” was.

“My senior year of high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I thought, ‘I’m good at talking and I like celebrities! I want to do something in broadcasting.’ ” Courtney chose Curry College after visiting campus to see the production facilities and classrooms.

“I didn’t realize how huge the Communication department was until I came to visit. There are so many resources. The TV studio is amazing, and I love that you’re hands-on. They don’t just show you, they let you do it yourself.”

During Courtney’s junior year, she interned at FOX25 after a conversation with a representative at a booth at the Student Center. At FOX, Courtney wrote Web stories, put together videos, and accompanied reporters or photographers to help them out. Almost right away, she was assigned to shadow Elizabeth Hopkins in the field. She was nervous at first, but was well prepared by the resources available to her as a Curry student.

After graduation, Courtney completed her Master’s Degree in Reporting in Public Affairs at American University, where she focused on Broadcast Journalism. She is currently working as the WFIRST Social Media and Outreach Coordinator and Video Producer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where she works with the multimedia team and develops content for social media accounts and the website. She also produces live shots that allow news stations to talk to scientists and engineers.

“Since working at NASA, I have found a passion for producing/production, and my television concentration at Curry has prepared me a lot for what I am doing now. It has allowed me to go into meetings and pitch ideas with confidence because I know I have the skills and experience to back them up.”

Curry alumni succeed — whether they run their own businesses, develop a new generation of leaders in the classroom, care for patients, work in front of the camera (or behind it), advance new technology, create visionary art, or serve their local, national and global communities, they make their mark on the world.

“ Thanks to Curry, I was equipped with the necessary skills on how to be and act like a professional. The transition from the classroom to the office was practically seamless.Elton Silva ’14 Business Management/Communication Senior Advisor, Pharmacy Product Development at CVS Health

I met people at Curry that were not like me – that is the most exciting part. Today my job is understanding a brand’s story and knowing how and when to tell it. Your job is to learn the stories of people around you, but to never shy away from your own story. Everything that happened to me in those four years while at Curry helped define who I am today.Alicia Viscomi Williams ’09 Communication Founder/CEO at Aliste Marketing
