Why use market data from pay surveys?  

Paying people fairly is just good business. When good employees are underpaid, they will eventually look for a better offer. Overpay, and the business may suffer. That’s why company’s use market data to research the value of their jobs. But what is “market data” anyway?

To determine the prevailing rate for a job, companies can “benchmark” jobs against compensation surveys that are detailed and specific to the companies’ industries and regions. A good compensation survey uses standard, proven methods of data gathering and statistical analysis to determine how much companies pay for a specific job in a specific industry. A number of types of organizations conduct salary surveys, including compensation information businesses, compensation consulting firms, industry associations, educational institutions, and state and federal governments.

Beware of “free” surveys from the internet and other sources. Conventional wisdom has always dictated that compensation data from individuals and recruiters is unavoidably, perpetually biased.

National data may be fine for jobs that are recruited for on a national basis but often have no relevance to the local labor market.
