Nihtihtahwihnan - Our Community

Hello ENOCH Members!

As one of the Portfolio leads for the ENOCH Health Division

I am writing to you all as an update to rumours going on in the community that an ENOCH Band Member in ENOCH has Covid 19!

Unfortunately, there has been a Band Member who has tested positive for Covid 19! The Band Member does NOT live on reserve and all protocols for contact tracing are being followed! We are also reassured that the Individual is to abide by the Alberta Health Guidelines and SELF ISOLATE as well as immediate household family members for the next 14-21 days!

Under the Alberta Health Privacy Act my Health staff are not at liberty to disclose the individuals name!

This recent development was brought to our attention late last night! Today our staff and Co-Health directors have been working with staff and Portfolio Leads (myself and Lyle (GeeJo) Morin) to work through the next steps of addressing as best as possible this situation!

It is IMPORTANT for me to stress that all ENOCH members should be following the HEALTH SAFETY PROTOCOLS of wearing PPE WASHING HANDS and SOCIAL DISTANCING as best as possible in all public buildings on a continual basis until the Covid 19 pandemic has some form of eradication thru vaccine or we as a society learn even more about how we can best combat the Covid -19 virus!

Any members who have been in contact with the individual or extended family can arrange for Covid 19 testing with our nursing staff at the ENOCH Health center!

780-470-5440! Again Alberta health protocols of contact tracing are being followed and people Are being contacted who may have come in close contact with the individual!

All Band departments will remain open at this time and AGAIN ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS at work stations need to follow the Health Guidelines which have been put out on numerous occasions on the ENOCH Echo page and the Alberta Health Internet sites over these past few months!

We knew at some point an ENOCH member may test positive for Covid 19!

We pray for that Band Members speedy and safe recovery! We also HAVE TO STRESS THE IMPORTANCE of and pray for all members to HELP KEEP EACH OTHER SAFE as well with best health practices possible!

Message from Ronald Morin Sr., (a division lead for Health) regarding a Positive Covid Test

Welcome to the September issue of the Enoch Echo. Normally, this would be a time of great excitement for our youth in anticipation of returning to school. This year, however there is a lot of hesitation, uncertainty and doubt for parents and students alike.

There is information in this issue, from MK school regarding how this will look and the safeguards for us all. Please take the time to read how the new school year will look, and alternative options for those who choose not to have their children attend.

Also, the big news this month, is unfortunately a Band Member has had a positive Covid Test result. Due to Privacy Law, the individual cannot be named.

We can rest assured our health department is on top of this and has prepared for this eventuality. Read more on this in a statement from Ron Morin Sr., one of the Division Leads for Health. I would like to wish this member a speedy recovery and prayers. Remember, we are all in this together, and must continue to support and love each other.

May the Creator bless us all

Anita Mackenzie

July 30, 2020 Re: MK School Plan 2020-2021 - Re-Entry tansi, caregivers, youth and members of the Nation, I thank you all for your patience and understanding during this time with respect to the maskekosak kiskinomatowikamik school’s re-launch plan for 2020-2021. Our priority continues to be the overall wellbeing of our students and staff during this uncertain time, and for caregivers to have the confidence to send their children to school. We plan to enforce all health and safety regulations possible to mitigate the risk of COVID 19, and to work with our community supports and external partners to assist us during this time. As some of you may know, Alberta Education announced their COVID 19 re-entry plan for the 2020-2021 year. The province has decided to implement scenario 1 that is a “near normal operation with health measures in place.” However, we must be ready and prepared for all 3 scenarios at this time. Kitaskinaw Education Authority is currently preparing for scenario 2 which states “classes partially resume with additional health measures.” We will continue to support our families with their decision if they decide to go with a regular-inschool program at home. With this information, we will need the support of caregivers to register your child(ren) from August 10th – 21st where we will have a call-in registration (more information on registration will be available soon). We had some families pre-register in June and we thank you, however, we may reach out to you if we require additional information. Overall, this information will help us to create classroom schedules/lists, cohorts, transporation lists, etc. If caregivers register their child(ren) after this window, we ask that you remain patient with us as we will have to implement a 3-5 day processing time to get the above information configured. We will keep our families and community updated as we continue to plan for September. tansi maskekosak families & Nation members,

As the new principal of maskêkosak kiskinomâtowikamik , it is an honour to update the Nation about the 2020-2021 school year despite this unprecedented time. My name is Jonathan Kaiswatum, and I have been in the education field for over 10 years as a teacher, administrator, and consultant. I look forward to meeting each of you, as we embark on this new year together.

I would also like to introduce the Vice Principal of maskêkosak kiskinomâtowikamik. Tara Crouter has been a teacher for over 15 years with Kitaskinaw Education Authority (KEA) and is a familiar face to the community. Our students and staff will greatly benefit from the knowledge and experience that she has of our education system. Together, we are truly excited to serve a Nation that has already given us a warm welcome as the administrative team for the school.

COVID-19 is an extremely fluid situation, our priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. Thus, KEA has developed a comprehensive re-entry plan reflective of a hybrid model in which classes will partially resume with additional health measures in place to ensure our parents and caregivers feel supported with the educational opportunities that we provide for this school year.

Our re-entry plan reflects input from the MK Parent/Caregiver Return to School Survey (June 2020), input from strategic planning sessions with MK staff (June 2020), and resources from Alberta Education and the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Mentioned below are some of the main components to our re-entry plan:

stA social distancing band meeting was held on July 31 , with a few dozen people in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was to "brainstorm" in groups, ideas about how to keep our nation safe once the Yakau Lake monies are released. Break out groups were formed, with each group having a member or members from Leadership as part of the discussions.

Ideas were formed about what people think may help the youth and the community stay safe, after receiving a large influx of money. Some of the ideas included: becoming a "dry" community for a period of time, Elder and youth mentors, financial literacy courses, drug awareness campaigns and the like.

It was a great setting to see members sitting together and working for a safer future for all generations.

We hope to see similar band meetings in the future!

ISC has extended the validity date of status cards until further notice. For the time being, service providers should accept status cards or Temporary Confirmation of Registration Documents (TCRDs), with identification, even if the renewal or expiry date has passed. It is important to note that Indian status does not expire. The registration number confirms Indian status and can be used to access services and programs.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, it is difficult to predict when all ISC programs and services will be fully restored. We are working to open most in-person service kiosks this Fall, depending on local public health directives. In the meantime, other options to apply for Indian Status and status card are still in place, including application by mail.

Traffic lights installedAfter years of waiting and a long process of negotiation with Alberta Transportation, traffic control lights have finally been installed at the intersection of “Oskya road” and Highway 60. This is beneficial for the safety of members, workers, bus and other transportation specialists, etc.

This corner is now safe for Nation Members to cross!

The day was nothing short of absolutely amazing! Thank you so much to Amy, Robert, Tara, Carley, Devon, Charles, Nina, and Gladys. The Enoch Animal Care and Control is so blessed to know such amazing people. A huge thank you goes out to River Cree Resort and Casino who sponsored almost every item needed for the BBQ.

Enoch Animal Care and Control helped over 30 families with pet food, treats, collars, leashes, harnesses. They also conducted brushing and nail trims for the pets. The day raised over $600 towards the fencing they need.

Thank you Animal Care and Control and Tanisha Ginther for all the incredible work you do for our 4-legged friends!

Although there has not been much to do this summer, with Covid cancelling festivals, sporting events, pow-wows, and large indoor gatherings, one event that has continued to keep us enthralled this summer is the Indian Relay!

Thank you to Kyle Peacock and family, Enoch Racing and all the racers who make these events happen. This relay was held in honor of

thLate Glen Peacock on the weekend of August 8 thand 9 and was a great tribute to a great man.

Papaschase Indian RelayBy Anita Mackenzie

Another fantastic weekend of Indian Relay was held on stAugust 21 weekend. This event was hosted on the

Nation, but was held by the Papaschase Nation for their first annual Relay. Chief Calvin Bruneau was in attendance, and the intermission shows featured traditional dancers to display the beautiful culture. A few hundred people were in attendance and our 2 Enoch Teams were competing along with 12 other teams.
