ST. GERARD-Summer Adventure 2020 A SUMMER CHILD CARE PROGRAM OPERATED BY ST. GERARD PARISH AND SCHOOL
4433 W. Willow Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917*517-853-0744*[email protected]
We hope that this information proves to be helpful in planning for the summer. All activities include preschool and school-age children unless otherwise noted (bus transported trips are for children entering grades 1-8 in the fall only). PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL NEED TO RE-EVALUATE OUR PLANS AS WE MOVE FORWARD REGARDING OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES SO AS TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN. WHILE EVERYTHING MAY OPEN BACK UP BY SUMMER, WE WILL NEED TO CONSIDER WHETHER OR NOT IT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF OUR CHILDREN TO HAVE THEM OUT AND ABOUT IN LARGER GROUP SETTINGS. WE WILL UPDATE FAMILIES ACCORDINGLY. The days at summer care will be filled with lots to do…arts and crafts, science exploration, games, scavenger hunts, treats, etc., but many of these activities are not listed on the calendar as we do not have enough space to fit everything. The calendar generally includes off-site activities and activities that may require you to provide something. The following is additional information that will be useful to you.
A FEW THINGS TO KNOW
• PARKING-Families will be able to park in the lot behind the school building (same lot that the child care entrance is located). Please note that there may be times during the day that we have cones out to deter people from parking in a specific area as we will use the parking lot for activities at varying times during the summer.
• SCHEDULE SUBMISSIONS-Schedules must be submitted online with payment by the 15th of the month prior to the month you need care. We are not able to guarantee availability if schedules are submitted late. Days may occasionally be added, but please DO NOT depend on adding days regularly throughout the summer. Special exceptions may apply.
• HOURS OF OPERATION-Summer Child Care is open from 7 am-6 pm each day. There is a late pick up fee of $25 if your child is picked up 6-6:15 and $50 beginning at 6:16. Our first day of care is Monday, June 8 and our last day is Wednesday, August 19. We are also closed July 3.
• EXTRA CLOTHES-Be sure to send your child with extra clothes every day. While you may bring extra clothes in a backpack each day, we encourage you to place an extra set in a labeled gallon-size Zip-Lock bag to leave at the center, especially for preschoolers. Be sure to label all clothing and items.
• SHOES-We ask that you provide your child with safe footwear as children may not be permitted to participate in some activities if it is deemed that their footwear is unsafe to do so. We strongly discourage flip flops and encourage any sandals to be close-toed / include a strap on the heel. If wearing sandals, we also encourage you to send a pair of tennis shoes and socks with your child for use at varying times during the day.
• DRESS CODE-We ask that all children and staff dress modestly. Tank tops are permitted, but they should not be snug fitting and shoulder straps should be at least 2 fingers in width. Spandex should not be worn unless covered by a skirt, shorts or dress. No “really short” dresses, skirts or shorts please. We know that younger girls like to wear dresses and skirts during the summer, especially preschoolers. As preschoolers tend to crawl around a lot in their play, we ask that they wear shorts under their skirts and dresses. In these instances, spandex shorts to wear under dresses and skirts would be appropriate.
• WATER BOTTLE-Children should bring a labeled water bottle from home. This will need to be taken home daily for washing. We will provide children the opportunity to drink as much water as they wish during the day, as well as take required water breaks. We will spend quite a bit of time outdoors, but we are very cautious when it comes to
their well-being. On very hot days, we will try to provide most of the outdoor activities during the morning hours, along with some limited time outdoors in the afternoon.
• REST TIME-We will be very active throughout the summer, so ALL children will have a rest time each day. For school agers, this will involve a time for children to read or participate in quiet activities for a period of time each afternoon….not a nap time, rather just a little time to take a break from all the activity. Preschool children will have an actual rest period. We provide cots and nap mats, but you are welcome to send in blankets and a soft Nap Buddy. Preschool nap time will typically begin at 1 pm and last for an hour (possibly longer for children that need it upon parent request). Families are required to take the center-provided nap mats home on their child(ren)’s last day of care each week for washing. Nap mats will need to be left at the center on a child’s last day of summer care so that we may wash them and have them ready for the fall.
• LUNCH/SNACK-Please provide your child with a cold lunch each day, with the exception of Mondays if you are opting for pizza. We do not refrigerate lunches, so be sure to include an icepack. Lunch will be held at 11:30 am each day (Mondays may be a bit later due to pizza pick-up). We ask that you do not send lunch items that need to be warmed up as this can be very time consuming. We provide a healthy snack at 8:30 am and 3 pm each day. Snack menus are posted at the parent table within the main child care entrance. Children will be permitted to pull remaining items from their lunch box to have along with their afternoon snack, but will not be permitted to do so afterwards.
• PERMISSION SLIPS-A blanket permission slip for activities is provided with your enrollment packet. Some families choose to only sign off on permission for those activities that they know that their child will be in attendance. It is ok to sign off on permission for your child to participate in all age-appropriate activities, even if you are unsure if he/she will attend child care on that day, This way, we do not need to bother you with signing off at the last minute. Please note that children are required to attend all off-site activities for their age-group when in attendance. If you wish for your child not to participate in an off-site activity, you will need to make other arrangements for your child care needs that day or pick up/drop off your child at the center prior to/after the scheduled field trip time.
• SUNSCREEN AND OTHER MEDICATIONS-If you intend for us to apply sunscreen to your child during the summer, be sure to complete a sunscreen permission slip. You are welcome to provide your own sunscreen (no spray or colored sunscreen please), but we do provide some (specific brand listed on permission slip). If you wish for us to give your child medications, they must be in their original container and a medication form must be filled out. These are available at the child care center and on our website.
• ALLERGIES-Please know that we are NOT a nut-free facility, but we have taken steps to eliminate center-provided snacks containing nuts or that are made in a facility that processes nuts from our snack list. For children with other food allergies, we will provide an alternate snack if that day’s snack contains a food item that they are allergic to. You are also welcome to provide your child with a snack if you are more comfortable with this. We provide a list of children with allergies to all of our classrooms. This list is based on the allergy information you have provided for us. We ask that you provide us with an epi-pen for your child if your physician has prescribed one.
• ACTIVITY SPACES-While we will use the first week to tweak room assignments, the plan is for preschool children (including those entering kindergarten in the fall) to be based out of the large preschool room and use the smaller preschool room as needed. Grades 1, 2 and 3 will be based out of the large school-age room (the “Big Room”) and grades 4 and up will be based out of the youth center located near the playground. All school-age children will start and end the day in the “Big Room” and then transition to their appropriate rooms as more children begin to arrive for the day. We will use the cafeteria space extensively, will have access to the gym for about the first week and a half (tough to stay cool in the gym during the summer, plus the floor gets refinished each summer), and the Majella Room on occasion (not air conditioned, but is located on the lower level and is a little cooler during the morning hours).
• DROP OFF AND PICK UP-All children must be signed in and out by parents, guardians, or other specified adults, age 18 and older. Please have your ID ready as we will keep asking for it until we get to know you. Please inform us if someone other than a parent/guardian is going to pick up your child.
• CONTACTING US-Our child care phone number and my email address (Mr. G.) are located at the top of the first page of this document. If you need to reach us, feel free to call us at any time during the day. If nobody answers, someone will return your call shortly. I monitor my email regularly throughout the day, so feel free to contact me by email if this suits you better. I will try to get back with you as soon as possible.
ACTIVITY INFORMATION
PLEASE ARRIVE AT LEAST A HALF HOUR PRIOR TO SCHEDULED OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES. SA= School Grade children grades 1 and up / PS=Preschool/Kindergarten…grade level is based on grade
children will be attending in the fall.
• MASS-Children will be provided the opportunity to attend morning Mass on Tuesdays. Please know that participation in Mass is totally voluntary. Even if you sign your child(ren) up to attend Mass for the summer, we will not require them to go unless you give specific instructions to do so. There is a spot on the blanket permission form if you wish for your child to attend Mass. Please arrive by 7:40 am. The first opportunity for children to attend Mass is Tuesday, June 23.
• WATER DAYS-We will generally have water play days on Wednesdays. On water days, we will provide outdoor water activities for the children (i.e. sprinkler and water games). In order to participate and for modesty sake, both boys and girls will need to wear a t-shirt and shorts/swim trunks that can get wet. Boys may wear swim trunks and girls may wear a swimsuit that includes a pair of swim shorts or swim skirt. We ask that water shoes be provided. Water Day items should be brought in a plastic bag on water days (i.e. plastic grocery bag) and taken home to wash at the end of the day. Don’t forget a towel. The first water day is Wednesday, June 10 and the last water day is Wednesday, August 12.
• PIZZA LUNCHES-We know that for many families, weekends are very busy during the summer, and getting ready for the start of the work week can be chaotic. We are therefore providing a pizza lunch for purchase every Monday (with the exception of 7/6 and 8/3 as we are providing a free picnic lunch). The cost is $3 per lunch and includes Little Caesars pepperoni or cheese pizza (up to 2 slices each), a vegetable, fruit and milk…and sometimes an extra treat. Just bring your payment in on Monday morning and let our staff know that your child will be having a pizza lunch that day. CASH ONLY PLEASE. Small bills preferred as we may not always be able to provide change right away. If by chance you forget to bring the cash on Monday morning, just let our staff know and you can take care of it later.
• TOYS AND TECH FROM HOME-All children are permitted to bring a toy from home on FRIDAYS ONLY and books any day of the week. Children are responsible for taking care of these items and all items should be labeled. Additionally, there are a few Fridays (6/26, 7/24, 8/14) that school-age children (children entering grades 1 and up) are permitted to bring in technology from home (i.e. handheld games, tablets, electronic board games). Cell phones are not considered acceptable technology, so please refrain from sending these in with your child on tech days. Wi-Fi will not be available for devices and we ask you to take any steps possible to turn off/lock data capabilities on the device as well. During the few tech days that we have, children will have a limited amount of time to use them as they will not be allowed to use them all day.
• WALKING TRIPS-When possible, staff and older children help pull younger preschool-age children in wagons on longer walks (Zap Zone, Sharp Park, Library). We have a couple of wagons, but if any preschool families have a wagon that they can bring on these days, please let us know as we would be happy to barrow it for the day. Older preschoolers may be required to walk.
