Obviously there have been disruptions to our usual teaching due to COVID- 19. As a result reports may contain some non-submitted (NS) or non- applicable (NA) grades. Non-submitted means that students have not completed some work. This may have occurred whilst they were participating in online learning. Not applicable means there is not enough evidence in this area for students to receive a grade in their mid-year report and so their final grade in this subject will be in their end of year report. It will be more difficult for teachers to complete reports this term, but we feel they are important as families have not had the opportunity to participate in face to face meetings. All students from Year 1 to Year 7 will be provided with an A to E grade in subjects. Please remember that a ‘C’ grade is the expected achievement at your child’s year level. Your child will also be given a grade for their effort and this is important to discuss with children as it will indicate whether your child is doing the best they can do. Merit Certificates & Value Awards Last week Kate and I visited classes to present our merit certificate and value awards as we are currently unable to present them at an assembly. It was a very enjoyable task as classes were very excited about having the opportunity to earn a certificate, and so there were loud celebrations as names were announced. Well done to our award winners below! Kind Regards, Rebecca Pears Important Dates

KINDNESS RESILIENCE EXCELLENCE RESPECT

Term 2 Week 5 Thursday 28th May 2020.

Principal: Rebecca Pears

June 8th Queens Birthday – Public Holiday

Dear Parents and Carers,

At this stage there will still be no changes to the precautionary COVD-19 measures implemented. If any of the restrictions change I will be informing the community as quickly as possible. Student Reports

Mid-Year Progress Reports will be going home at the end of this term. Teachers have been busy writing these reports which will provide a formative assessment of your child’s progress for the first half of the year. Obviously there have been disruptions to our usual teaching due to COVID-19. As a result reports may contain some non-submitted (NS) or non-applicable (NA) grades. Non-submitted means that students have not completed some work. This may have occurred whilst they were participating in online learning. Not applicable means there is not enough evidence in this

area for students to receive a grade in their mid-year report and so their final grade in this subject will be in their end of year report.

This week is Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Week has been acknowledged in NAPS classrooms and in the art room. We had sincerely hoped to have local and global Elder Major Moogy Sumner here for the week, but unfortunately circumstances have not allowed for that. We strongly encourage all in the NAPS community to acknowledge and discuss Reconciliation Week and consider ways in which you can make it meaningful in your context. A Reconciled Australia is a healthier Australia. As well as bringing attention to the profound significance of Reconciliation for all Australians, Reconciliation Week begins and ends on important dates. May 27th, marks the date of the 1967 Referendum, in which Australians voted to amend the constitution to include Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islanders in the census. The 1967 Referendum achieved the largest yes vote in Australia’s history and remains of immense symbolic and practical importance. June 3rd marks the date of the 1992 High Court ‘Mabo’ Decision overturning the legal doctrine of terra nullius, according to which Australia was ‘uninhabited’ prior to British colonisation. The decision established Aboriginal

ownership, connection and legal rights to traditional lands. It was a huge step on the Reconciliation journey and toward a truer history of Australia.

LIBRARY NEWS

Young Dark Emu: For Reconciliation Week 2020 the library has expanded its Indigenous collection. We are particularly pleased to have acquired two copies of Bruce Pascoe’s ‘Young Dark Emu’. Young Dark Emu is an Upper Primary title based the highly influential history, Dark Emu, which columnist Marcia Langton has called “the most important book on Australia [which] should be read by every Australian.” Young Dark Emu uses primary sources from many of Australia’s most noted early explorers to paint “a truer history” of life in Australia prior to colonisation. It radically reframes our received and is thought provoking indeed. We are pleased that NAPS students will have access to this critical and contemporary perspective on Australian history.

Congratulations to the following students who has already been busy with their reading:- Minnie Prowse &

Sharvi Kamble.

Kind Regards Dan and Yianoula

CHINESE NEWS

We started a new topic in Chinese learning this term. Reception to Year 2 students are learning how to read and write numbers. They are also learning self-introduction and aiming to communicate with the teacher and peers by asking and responding questions about their name and age. Year 3 - 4 students are learning colours and are aiming to be able to recognise, read and write colour names in Chinese, as well as being able to express likes and dislikes of a particular colour in both spoken and written Chinese. Year 5-7 students are learning days/date/time, and are aiming to be able to describe and give topic-related information in their daily life scenarios. All the year levels will learn the Chinese culture of the Dragon Boat Festival to be held on 25th June 2020.

Practising Gratitude with Your Children Gratitude is one of the most important skills we can teach our children. Not only does this practice reduce stress and increase happiness, it also provides children with the building blocks they need to create a meaningful life. It provides them with a connection to something greater, helps them live a healthier life, and promotes deeper, more meaningful relationships with others.

The character strength of gratitude involves feeling and expressing a deep sense of thankfulness in life, and more specifically, taking the time to genuinely express thankfulness to others. It is one of the character strengths that is associated with happiness and life satisfaction. It is about acknowledging the goodness in your life and appreciating things as small gifts. Grateful people tend to look at their life experiences, and even their challenges, in a positive way. It’s a likable quality, so other people gravitate towards grateful individuals leading to many strong, quality relationships.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING GRATEFUL: A Healthier Life: Instilling and nurturing this strength in your children can have immediate and noticeable effects on their lives. Psychology Today reported that people who practise gratitude from a young age have “more social connections and fewer bouts of depression, which affects 20.9 million adults.” In addition, research by Dr. Robert Evans, one of the world’s leading experts on gratitude, suggests that there are measurable physical, psychological, and social benefits that come with gratitude throughout life. People who practise gratitude:

Feel better about their lives overall

Have fewer physical issues

Eat healthier and prioritize exercise

Sleep more soundly

Live longer lives More Meaningful Relationships: Teaching your children how to identify, understand, and express gratitude can help them build more meaningful types of relationships early on in life and throughout their lives.

HOW TO PRACTISE GRATITUDE WITH YOUR CHILDREN: Gratitude is more than simply saying "thank you" when someone does something nice. It's a series of behaviors that typically happen in the following sequence:

Notice

Think

Feel

Do Try going through these questions with your children to nurture their practice every time they receive something or feel thankful.

What do you notice in your life that you are grateful for? Did you receive a gift recently? Are the things you

are thankful for material or are they feelings, like love?

Why do you think you’ve received the things you’re thankful for? Do you think you owe the giver something

in return?

How does the gift you’ve received make you feel? What about this gift makes you feel good or happy?

What are you going to do to show how you feel about your gift? Does this gift make you want to share your

feelings about it? Eventually, these questions will be internalized and gratitude will be a part of how your children live their lives every day. As a parent, you have the ability to help your children build up this character strength! Adapted from an article by Matt O’Grady
