One of the key factors affecting long term success of dental implants is the volume of the surrounding bone. In many situations, clinicians are faced with inadequate bone for implant placement. This may make them alter their treatment plan or may indicate additional bone grafting procedures to be done before or at the time of implant placement. This seminar will review the indications and techniques for ridge preservation, GBR and sinus elevation. Learning objectives:

• Understand optimum bone requirements for implant placement• Assess available bone when treatment planning for implants• Discuss treatment options when bone volume is not sufficient• Understand ridge preservation techniques and ways to minimize bone loss following tooth extraction• Identify factors affecting predictability of bone augmentation procedures• Discuss techniques available for sinus elevation and ridge augmentation

The Biological Power of Platelets Derivatives

The biological derivatives of platelets and the power of platelets regeneration gained remarkable attention across the scientific literature and the media for its potential capabilities in regenerative therapy. The platelets are known for their multifaceted role in wound healing such as hemostasis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, differentiation, and inflammation. This lecture aims to assimilate current evidence on the role of platelet derivatives regeneration impact, particularly in implant dentistry, by integrating findings from human, animal and biomedical studies. The lecture is composed of four parts: Firstly, a review of key aspects of platelet biology and function. Secondly, a critical discussion of the clinical factors affecting the preparation of platelet derivatives that may account for large inconsistencies in outcomes from different studies. Thirdly, familiarization with the classifications of platelet derivatives and need for standardization. Finally, the clinical application of platelet derivatives.

Dr. Sally Issa is an internationally trained dentist, she graduated in 1996 with a degree of honor in Dental Medicine and Oral Surgery from Cairo University in Egypt. Dr. Issa completed a three-year Master of Science degree in Implant Dentistry from University of Warwick, in the UK. Crown and bridge prosthodontics on natural teeth is not dead. Implants have taken over much of what we speak and teach about however as experienced clinicians, we need to remember that well proven prosthodontics is still an excellent way to manage our patients. With proper lab and staff support, restorations like RESIN BONDED BRIDGES, REPAIR VENEERS, POST AND CORES, CONVENTIONAL ATTACHMENT BASED FIXED CROWN AND BRIDGEWORK, AND PARTIAL DENTURES are an integral part of what we do. This presentation will review key success criteria for these types of restorations to ensure that they are always viable and successful.

Dr. Izchak Barzilay received his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1983, a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY in 1986, and a MS from the University of Rochester in 1991. Dental Pharmacology: What I Really Need to Know

Clinical pharmacology studies the effects of drugs and their use for preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In this lecture I will review the various pharmacological agents commonly used in the daily dental practice. We will discuss local anaesthetics, its mechanism of action, onset and duration of action and adverse effects and potential complications associated with its use. Also, we will review the analgesics most commonly used in dentistry namely, acetaminophen, NSAIDs and opioids. In this section, I will discuss the adverse effects, common drug interactions and recommended dosages. Moreover, anti-infectives most commonly used will be discussed. Also, since the use of herbal medications has significantly increased in the last few years, a discussion on the most common herbal medications will be provided and its effects on dental treatment. Finally, in this lecture we will review special topics such as geriatrics, pregnancy, kidney failure and liver disease, all situations requiring special caution on the part of the clinician when prescribing or administering drugs in the daily dental practice. Learning objectives:

• Understand basic concepts of pharmacology namely pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. • Understand the mechanism of action of local anaesthetics, the factors that affect their onset and duration of action and the common complication associated with their administration.• Be informed of the analgesics currently used in dentistry. Understand the various adverse effects and drug interactions relevant to dentistry. • Understand the rational use of anti-infective agents in dentistry, both in terms of the management of existing orofacial infections and for prophylaxis against the development of bacterial endocarditis or other infection post treatment. Tooth Autografts - Everyday Clinical Applications

Tooth-derived bone graft material has been becoming a practical substitute to bone grafting. It can also be used as a carrier for growth factors and stem cells as reported in many recent studies. Autogenous-tooth bone grafting technique is significant as this biomaterial has excellent bone regeneration capacity and also relatively non-existent chances of antigenicity, genetic diseases and disease transmission. This presentation will discuss the various clinical applications of the technique.

Dr. Joshua Shieh is a third generation clinician whose family holds a tradition of dentistry since 1937. A foreign trained periodontist, practising as an associate general dentist in and around the areas of GTA, Ontario. Currently serves as a Clinical Instructor at the Oral Rehabilitation Centre , Grad Periodontics clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Clinical instructor at The Institute of Dental Excellence (TIDE) and volunteers as a committee member at the Ontario Dental Association.

Dental implants have proven to be a viable restorative solution for patients around the world. For dentists, the focus has historically been on successful surgical results. Today, that focus has shifted to improving restorative results at the implant-tissue interphase. Whether you prefer the screw-in technique or the cement-in technique, most dentists would agree that oral pathogens are the main mechanism by which mechanical complications, such as loose and broken screws, misfit implant joints and ill-fitting prosthetics, lead to biological consequences.

What is the underlying cause of these mechanical complications? Research points to what Dr. Svoboda has dubbed the “Old Dragons of Implant Dentistry”. The first Dragon is Prosthesis Dimensional Error, the culmination of all the fabrication errors from impression taking to prosthesis polishing. The literature is rife with references. The second Dragon refers to the Tissue Effects, the influence of hard and soft tissue on the implant, abutment and crown connections. For those who wish to cement their crowns, both Dragons have significant effects on the flow of excess cement and indeed, on residual submarginal cement. For those who are screwing-in their prosthetics, sadly, both Dragons can cause misfit of implant parts. Wouldn’t it be nice to consistently optimize the fit of parts and prevent residual submarginal cement?

Join us and learn how to recognize, separate and tame these Dragons and make your implant restorations easier, faster, better! Experience for yourself, during our hands-on Workshop, how to simplify and improve the restorative phase of implant treatment. This Workshop is guaranteed to transform your approach to providing implant restorations for your patients. Nobody likes complications that can easily be prevented!

Hands-on Workshop seating is limited. Register Early.

Dr. Svoboda earned his PhD and DDS degrees at the University of Toronto, and went into clinical practice. A student for life, he developed a keen interest in dental implants and restorative dentistry. His course of study earned him Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry. After 25+ years of implant surgery, restoration and independent research, he successfully developed abutment designs and installation techniques that render treatment safer for patients. Dr. Svoboda lectures throughout Canada and the United States about his safer installation protocol.

Dr. Anit Sharma graduated from the University of Western Ontario, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2004 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He continued his studies in India and graduated with a BDS degree in 2007. Having developed a keen interest in surgery, he continued his post graduate studies with a focus on Implantology. He completed the AAID Maxicourse at NYU in 2007 and furthered his studies by taking an AAID sponsored intensive hands-on bone grafting course in Henderson, Nevada. Dr. Sharma is also certified in the use of L-PRF (platelet rich fibrin) which he readily employs in implant placement, bone grafting and sinus grafting to optimize healing for patients in his care. Dr. Anit Sharma is an Associate Fellow of the American Association of Implant Dentistry and a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Millions of dental implants are placed worldwide every year and some of them have been followed for over 30 years. Unfortunately the profession is reporting a high incidence of complications and failures. This seminar will review the most common risk factors and complications in implant dentistry including the speaker’s personal experience having placed over 15,000 implants with up to a 30 year follow up.

Learning objectives:

• Why complications are increasing and common• Categories of risk factors that can lead to complications and failures such as “Patient Systemic and Local Factors”, Operator Factors” and “Biomaterial Factors”• How to recognize, treat and prevent complications

Dr. Murray Arlin, D.D.S., dip Perio, F.R.C.D.(C) received his D.D.S. from McGill University in 1977. Complications in Implant Dentistry

Food impaction is one of the most common risk factors for the development of peri-implantitis. It can cause inflammation, edema, bleeding and pain around the peri-implant mucosa. The design of an implant restoration can create a positive and negative effect on the per-mucosal health. The contour of the abutment is far more important to the tissue than contour of the crown. In this lecture the optimal form of the emergence profile will be discussed and a simple but unique restorative/surgical technique will be introduced to develop a good junctional epithelial seal around implant abutments. The combination of an optimal emergence profile and a junctional epithelium seal will guarantee a good long-term clinical outcome of fixed implant-supported prostheses.

Dr. Babak Shokati is a board-certified prosthodontist. He received his dental degree in 1998 and practiced general dentistry for several years before pursuing post-graduate education in biomaterials and prosthodontics. He obtained a Master’s Degree (MSc.) in dental biomaterials (2007) and an MSc. specialty degree in Prosthodontics (2011) from the University of Toronto. He is currently holding a faculty position (Assistant Professor) in the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, directing Undergraduate Prosthodontics and Biomaterials Science courses at the Faculty of Dentistry. Dr. Shokati is a Fellow of the Royal College of the Dentists of Canada (FRCDC). He practices as a prosthodontist in several multi-specialty clinics with a focus on dental implant, cosmetic dentistry, and management of prosthetic and implant complications.

Dr. Shokati teaches evidence-based implant prosthetic techniques that can be readily learned and performed by most general dentists. He is currently conducting a clinical study investigating the long-term outcomes of classic implant-supported bridges in the first group of North American implant patients treated by Professors Brånemark, Zarb and their surgical/prosthetic teams.

Since the concept of osseointegration was discovered in the 1950’s by Prof. Brånemark, many studies have shown high success rates centered around the functionality of dental implants with no regard for esthetics. The longevity of an implant inserted into bone is no longer an issue, but the longevity of the crowns over these implants is now more important, not only from the functional aspect but also from the esthetic point of view. Another important aspect to be observed is the way the soft and hard tissues behave once an implant receives function.

The key aspects that should be evaluated in implant restorations are:• Evaluation of the interoclusal space• Individual or multiple restoration• Screw or cement retained• Straight or angled abutment• Evaluation of the soft tissue (quality & quantity) regarding biological width• Digital X Pre-fab solutionThese factors must be taken into consideration to rehabilitate a dental implant in order to offer high predictability in the areas of function, esthetic, phonetic and hygiene condition.

Learning objectives:

At the conclusion of this seminar participants will have knowledge of:• The importance of implant placement thinking 3-dimensionally• The level of the restoration: Implant X Abutment• Abutment collar height selection regarding biological width• Optimization of the bone crest and soft tissue maintenance• Function x aesthetic and phonetic x hygiene. What is more important?

Dr. Elahe Behrooz, D.D.S., M.B.A., D.D.S., Cert. Prostho., F.R.C.D.(C)

Failure of dental implants has significant financial, psychological and biological consequences to the patients. One of such consequences may be that failures may present with prosthetic implications. These prosthetic implications have minor or major impacts on the design of the implant-supported prostheses. It is crucial to identify signs and symptoms of implant complications, the appropriate prosthetic implications of late failures and to execute the most appropriate prosthodontic treatment in a timely manner.

Dr. Elahe Behrooz obtained her first DDS degree in Iran and her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Eric Sprott School of Business, Carleton University. She obtained her second DDS degree from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto with honors in June 2016. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and has authored and co-authored multiple publications both in Iran and Canada. She holds fellowships of multiple organizations including the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), Ontario Dental Association (ODA), the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) and the OKU Honorary Dental Society. In addition to her passion for prosthodontics, she enjoys playing the guitar, socializing and traveling to underserviced areas to provide dental care.

Implant failures and their prosthodontic management

Management of single or multiple missing teeth in the esthetic zone is quiet challenging; this treatment option is classified as “Advance to complex.” After implant placement optimization of soft tissues with pink and white dental resins, ceramics to create an ideal “transition zone” from the implant to the abutment and the crown are quiet challenging. This creation of ideal emergence profile requires management of gingival soft tissues and their recontouring both surgically and prosthetically.

Course Objective:

1. Case Selection with ideal treatment options.2. Treatment planning with careful considerations to esthetics.3. Implant design surgical and prosthetic considerations. 4. To graft or not to graft, balance between pink and white esthetics. 5. Indications for immediate placement and Temporization. 6. Introduce you to anatomical, surgical and restorative treatment planning considerations.7. CBCT and CADCAM technologies. 8. Overview of Digital work flow and advancements in the prosthetic phase of implants dentistry and lab communication.9. Final Prosthesis design, material selection and case management.

In a demanding world where perfection is portrayed as an absolute criterion of success, it is not easy to be a dentist. Patients are becoming more demanding of health care providers especially with regards to their aesthetic needs. Changes to employment and labor laws, corporation tax changes, the increase in the dentist-to-population ratio, and the rising costs of running a dental practice are some factors contributing to the high levels of stress and anxiety perceived by our profession.

Unfortunately, dentists and other health care providers do not have access to adequate resources to maintain and improve all aspects of their well-being and introduce balance into their busy and demanding schedules. This seminar introduces various approaches that could be practiced on a daily basis to bring a sense of balance, joy, fulfillment, inner calm, and gratefulness to the individuals. This is an introduction to practical and effective techniques for a life-long lasting state of intellectual, physiological, and spiritual welfare.

Dr. Dibadin graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto in 2014 and started practicing dentistry in northernOntario. An Insider’s view of your financial institution- What you should ask and what you need to know.

Dental implants have revolutionized the replacement options that are available for complete and partial edentulism. A clear majority of our patients seek to augment the retention and stability of their prosthesis, with many seeking full arch fixed solutions. However, there are a few limitations that one must be aware of and these can be described as structural and functional synergies. Another way to describe it is strategy and structural matches which must be observed to prevent failure. Failures do not make patients or doctors happy, failures do not lead to more referrals and failures cost you money. This seminar is designed primarily to discuss options for dental implants and fixed prostheses and indications, relative contraindications and absolute contraindications for these designs; failures of some types of designs and actual case discussions with multi-year follow-up will be presented during our journey.

The aim of prosthodontic rehabilitation is to provide the patient with functional and aesthetic restorations. New materials and technologies are continually being developed and introduced into the marketplace. The general practitioner is often faced with the difficult task of deciphering between available products and treatment workflows. Navigating through the maze of materials can be quite daunting. Understanding when and how to use different ceramics and recognizing appropriate bonding or cementation techniques is critical in achieving successful outcomes. The aim of this presentation is to help navigate through the choices. Course Objectives:

• Key insights in achieving predictable and aesthetic restorations will be outlined.• Discuss the required interdisciplinary communication between the dentist, specialist and laboratory technician.• Numerous clinical examples in which the techniques described will be demonstrated.
