2020Case Statement

Celebrating 6 Years of Jazz in January

Case for SupportThe Tucson Jazz Festival (TJF) attracts jazz fans from the East Coast, Midwest, Northwest, West Coast, Canada and Arizona residents from outside of Tucson with hot and cool jazz and toasty temperatures during January, historically a slow time for business and tourism in the Old Pueblo. The festival boosts spending by locals in our thriving downtown with its trendy restaurants and historic performance venues and brings in significant tourist spending dollars from outside of the Tucson area. Post-festival surveys show that between 85% and 90% of the concertgoers have dinner or go shopping downtown before or after the shows and that many of our concert attendees come to Tucson just for the Jazz Festival.

Located primarily downtown at downtown Tucson theatres, the HSL Properties Tucson Jazz Festival will take place from Thursday, Jan. 10

to Monday, Jan. 20, 2020. The Festival hosts a free event on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 20th in downtown Tucson with two outdoor stages and presents concerts over the festival at least a half-dozen indoor venues in restaurants, clubs and theatres.

In addition to the official festival concerts, local bands play at downtown clubs and across the city on weeknights and are promoted as part of the festival. Jazz street performers work the streetcar stops and elsewhere. The TJF partners with the Desert Song Festival and hosts educational outreach events participating with the Ellington Jazz Program and the University of Arizona.

The HSL Properties Tucson Jazz Festival brings thousands of people downtown, attracts new winter visitors, and reinforces Tucson as a world-class music destination.

Estimated Budget & ImpactThe cash budget for the Tucson Jazz Festival is $500,000 and is funded 52% by partnerships and contributions and 48% by ticket sales. An additional $300,000 in services, artist accommodations and marketing are provided “in-kind” by other partners.

In 2019, almost 23,000 people attended festival concerts including more than 14,000 at the free Downtown Jazz Fiesta. Over 25,000 people are expected to attend the Festival is 2020.

66% of the individual attendees from the previous festivals were from outside the Tucson area and 49% of those came to Tucson specifically for the festival.

Using the Americans for the Arts’ economic impact calculator, the estimated impact of the festival is $1.2 million dollars. This aligns with the economic impact studies of other jazz festivals.

Between the January before the festival started and January 2017, hotel revenues for January increased by more than $15 million. That translates to an 16% increase in occupancy; an average rate increase of 25%; a revenue per available room increase of 45%; and a total room revenue increase of 41%.

DemographicsThe festival audience is an affluent and business minded group with mature tastes and interests. 50% have an annual income of $100,000 or more and 75% have completed graduate school.
