MEIRICK HUFFMAN WINS PEOPLES SAVINGS BANK SCHOLARSHIP
Meirick Huffman, son of Derrick and Angie Huffman, is the 2020 winner of the $750 Peoples Savings Bank Scholarship. Meirick graduated from Osage High School. While in school he participated in football, wrestling, trap shooting, choir, musicals, FFA, and Big Brother/Big Sister program. Meirick grew up on a farm west of Elma and attended Elma Elementary prior to moving to Osage.
Meirick completed his basic training for the National Guard last summer and will leave for additional training later this spring. He plans to attend Iowa State University this fall majoring in Criminal Justice while continuing to serve in the National Guard. He hopes to work for the DEA or FBI someday.
Each year Peoples Savings Bank of Elma gives away one scholarship to a student graduating from an area high school and who consider Elma or Alta Vista, Iowa, as their home town. The Peoples Savings Bank Elma Area Scholarship Fund is a fund of the Elma Area Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa selects the recipient based on criteria set by Peoples Savings Bank. For more information about
Peoples Savings Bank go to www.psbiowa.com or call 641-393-2301.

MORE MONEY FOR YOU!
After much deliber-ation and with great regret we have made the difficult
decision to cancel Old Roundhouse Trail Days for 2020 (hear after to be named Elma Trail Days). With the Covid-19 virus still present, we feel that the uncertainty of public safety to gather in large crowds again by July is a risk we are unwilling to take.
We are working to offer a smaller scale event (or two!) of some sort yet this summer or early fall, so please watch for future news on this. The Elma Trail Days Committee
Mark your calendars for Elma Trail Days returning July 9-10-11 in 2021!

Get those bikes and walking shoes ready and get out and enjoy it by walking, running, biking or roller blading the OLD ROUNDHOUSE TRAIL in Elma, which is a portion of the Great Western Wapsi Recreational Trail. Now connected to the trail of the same name stretching north through Howard & Mitchell counties, through Riceville and McIntire.
Corn and Beans As of this writing, cash corn is $2.80 and cash soybeans are $7.99. Corn is $.05 higher and soybeans are $.18 higher than one month ago. July corn futures are $3.17, with support at $3.15 and then at $3.11, resistance is at $3.19 and then at $3.23. July soy-bean futures are $8.37, with support at $8.33 and then at $8.23, resistance is at $8.42 and then at $8.52. Monday, 5/11 crop progress had corn at 67% planted and soybeans at 38% planted. Corn futures continue to be pressured by favorable weather fore-casts and abundant US corn stocks. Price support recently has been good weekly export sales and strength in crude oil futures. Corn will likely continue to trade sideways to lower over the next few weeks. It will take multiple days per week of daily sales announcements to move traders to the long side of the market. IEG Vantage (formerly Informa) reportedly forecast US corn plantings at only 94.16 million acres, nearly 3 million acres below USDA planting inten-tions. If planted acres and yield are at or above USDA estimate the US potentially will have the largest corn
carryover in more than 30 years. Soybean futures continue to be pres-sured by adequate stocks, favorable weather, and concerns of acreage shifts from corn to soybeans. With all of that said any market rallies need to be used as sales opportunities. The government has agreed to make market loss payments to livestock and row crop producers. As of now sign up will not be until late May or early June at the earliest. Crop insur-ance guarantees will provide new crop floors unless we have a major shift in fundamentals. I know this is a very stressful time for every produc-er. The only thing I can tell you is to hang in there you’re definitely not alone and we will get through this. Don’t let the stress build up to a point where it is affecting your health, decisions, and relationships. Farmers natural reaction to stress is to work harder and talk less. You need to talk to someone don’t let the stress build.
Feel free to contact Logan, Sam or myself with your marketing plans or concerns. Doug Uthe
Cattle Cash cattle are $1.13, up $8 from last month. Slaughter continues to run slower than normal but is gaining some capacity back. Boxed beef pric-es closed lower. Packers still have record margins but if boxed prices drop much so will cash prices as we have lots of cattle available due to backed up inventories.
Hogs Cash hogs are $36-$38. Packers are slowly increasing capacity. Cash prices will be pressured from the backlog of market hogs and lower cutout values.
